God has ordained a structure of authority for mankind

1 Cor. 11:3 : "But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ"

Eph. 6:1 : "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right."

 

God gives authority to Jesus

Matth. 28:18 : 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth."

Ps. 2:9 : "Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware."

Isaiah 11:4 "With righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness the afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked."

 

God gives authority to elders

Acts 20:28 : "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own Blood."

Heb. 13:17 : "Obey your leaders and submit to them; for they keep watch over your souls, as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you."

1Tim. 3:4-5 : "He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God ?)"

1Cor. 4:21 : "What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?"

 

God gives authority to husbands

Col 3:18 : "Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord."

Eph 5:22 : "Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord."

 

God gives authority to parents

Ex 20:12 : "Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you."

Prov. 1:8 : "Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and do not forsake your mother's teaching."

Col. 3:20 : "Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.

 

God's discipline towards the believer

Heb. 12:6-11 : "For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives. It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline, But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness. All discipline seems for the moment not to be joyful, but sorrowful; and yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness."

2Sam 7:14-15 : "I will be a Father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him."

 

Exhortation for parents to see the blessings of discipline

Prov. 10:17 : "He is on the path of life who heeds instruction, but he who forsakes reproof goes astray."

Prov. 12:1 : "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid."

Prov. 13:18 : "Poverty and shame will come to him who neglects discipline, but he who regards reproof will be honoured."

Prov. 14:26-27 : "In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and his children will have refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death."

Prov. 15:32-33 : "He who neglects discipline despises himself, but he who listens to reproof acquires understanding. The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom, and before honour comes humility."

Prov. 17:10 : "A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool."

Prov. 19:18 : "Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death."

Prov. 19:20 : "Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days."

Prov. 22:6 : "Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it."

Prov. 29:17 : "Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; he will also delight your soul."

 

How to discipline

Prov. 10:13 : "On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding."

Prov. 13:24 : He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently."

Prov. 22:15 : "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of discipline will remove it far from him."

Prov. 23:12-14 : "Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to words of knowledge. Do not hold back discipline from the child, although you beat him with the rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from Sheol."

Prov. 29:15 : "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother."

Eph. 6:4 : "And , fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

Col. 3:21 : "Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that they may not lose heart."

Deut. 11:18-21 : "You shall therefore impress these words of Mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. And you shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth."

Prov. 6:20-23 : "My son, observe the commandment of your father, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. Bind them continually on your heart; tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk to you. For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is a light; and reproofs for discipline are the way of life."
