| 2 | Car je suis plus stupide que personne, et je n'ai pas l'intelligence d'un homme. | Surely I am more brutish than any man, And have not the understanding of a man; |
| 3 | Je n'ai pas appris la sagesse, et je ne connais pas la science du Saint. | And I have not learned wisdom, Neither have I the knowledge of the Holy One. |
| 4 | Qui monte au ciel et qui en descend ? Qui a recueilli le vent dans ses mains ? Qui a lié les eaux dans son vêtement ? Qui a affermi toutes les extrémités de la terre ? Quel est son nom et quel est le nom de son fils ? Le sais-tu ? | Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in his garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son`s name, if thou knowest? |
| 5 | Toute parole de Dieu est éprouvée par le feu; il est un bouclier pour ceux qui se réfugient auprès de lui. | Every word of God is tried: He is a shield unto them that take refuge in him. |
| 6 | N'ajoute rien à ses paroles, de peur qu'il ne te reprenne et que tu ne sois trouvé menteur. | Add thou not unto his words, Lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. |
| 7 | Je te demande deux choses, ne me les refuse pas avant que je meure : | Two things have I asked of thee; Deny me [them] not before I die: |
| 8 | Eloigne de moi la fausseté et la parole mensongère; ne me donne ni pauvreté, ni richesse, accorde-moi le pain qui m'est nécessaire : | Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for me: |
| 9 | de peur que, rassasié, je ne te renie et ne dise : « Qui est Yahweh ? »; et que, devenu pauvre, je ne dérobe, et n'outrage le nom de mon Dieu. | Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who is Jehovah? Or lest I be poor, and steal, And use profanely the name of my God. |
| 10 | Ne calomnie pas un serviteur auprès de son maître, de peur qu'il ne te maudisse et que tu n'en portes la peine. | Slander not a servant unto his master, Lest he curse thee, and thou be held guilty. |
| 11 | Il est une race qui maudit son père, et qui ne bénit pas sa mère. | There is a generation that curse their father, And bless not their mother. |
| 12 | Il est une race qui est pure à ses propres yeux, et qui n'est pas lavée de sa souillure. | There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, And [yet] are not washed from their filthiness. |
| 13 | Il est une race – combien ses regards sont altiers, et ses paupières élevées! | There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up. |
| 14 | Il est une race dont les dents sont des glaives, et les molaires des couteaux, pour dévorer les malheureux de dessus la terre, et les indigents parmi les hommes. | There is a generation whose teeth are [as] swords, and their jaw teeth [as] knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. |
| 15 | La sangsue a deux filles : Donne! Donne! Trois choses sont insatiables, quatre ne disent jamais : Assez : | The horseleach hath two daughters, [crying], Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, [Yea], four that say not, Enough: |
| 16 | le schéol, le sein stérile, la terre qui n'est pas rassasiée d'eau et le feu qui ne dit jamais : Assez! | Sheol; and the barren womb; The earth that is not satisfied with water; And the fire that saith not, Enough. |
| 17 | L'oeil qui se moque d'un père, et qui dédaigne l'obéissance envers une mère, les corbeaux du torrent le perceront, et les petits de l'aigle le dévoreront. | The eye that mocketh at his father, And despiseth to obey his mother, The ravens of the valley shall pick it out, And the young eagles shall eat it. |
| 18 | Il y a trois choses qui me dépassent, et même quatre que je ne comprends pas : | There are three things which are too wonderful for me, Yea, four which I know not: |
| 19 | La trace de l'aigle dans les cieux, la trace du serpent sur le rocher, la trace du navire au milieu de la mer, et la trace de l'homme chez la jeune fille. | The way of an eagle in the air; The way of a serpent upon a rock; The way of a ship in the midst of the sea; And the way of a man with a maiden. |
| 20 | Telle est la voie de la femme adultère : elle mange et, s'essuyant la bouche, elle dit : « Je n'ai pas fait de mal. » | So is the way of an adulterous woman; She eateth, and wipeth her mouth, And saith, I have done no wickedness. |
| 21 | Sous trois choses la terre tremble, et sous quatre, qu'elle ne peut supporter : | For three things the earth doth tremble, And for four, [which] it cannot bear: |
| 22 | sous un esclave lorsqu'il vient à régner, et un insensé lorsqu'il est rassasié de pain, | For a servant when he is king; And a fool when he is filled with food; |
| 23 | sous une femme dédaignée lorsqu'elle se marie, et sous une servante lorsqu'elle hérite de sa maîtresse. | For an odious woman when she is married; And a handmaid that is heir to her mistress. |
| 24 | Il y a sur la terre quatre animaux bien petits, et qui sont cependant très sages : | There are four things which are little upon the earth, But they are exceeding wise: |
| 25 | Les fourmis, peuple sans force, préparent en été leur nourriture; | The ants are a people not strong, Yet they provide their food in the summer; |
| 26 | les damans, peuple sans puissance, placent leur gîte dans les rochers; | The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks; |
| 27 | les sauterelles n'ont pas de roi, et elles sortent toutes par bandes; | The locusts have no king, Yet go they forth all of them by bands; |
| 28 | tu peux prendre le lézard avec la main, et il se trouve dans le palais des rois. | The lizard taketh hold with her hands, Yet is she in kings` palaces. |
| 29 | Il y en a trois qui ont une belle allure, et quatre qui ont une belle démarche : | There are three things which are stately in their march, Yea, four which are stately in going: |
| 30 | le lion, le plus brave des animaux, ne reculant devant aucun adversaire; | The lion, which is mightiest among beasts, And turneth not away for any; |
| 31 | l'animal aux reins agiles, ou le bouc, et le roi, à qui personne ne résiste. | The greyhound; the he-goat also; And the king against whom there is no rising up. |
| 32 | Si tu es assez fou pour te laisser emporter par l'orgueil, et si tu en as la pensée, mets la main sur ta bouche, | If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, Or if thou hast thought evil, [Lay] thy hand upon thy mouth. |
| 33 | car la pression du lait produit du beurre, la pression du nez produit du sang, et la pression de la colère produit la querelle. | For the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, And the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood; So the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife. |
