| 1 | Ces choses sont aussi des Proverbes de Salomon, que les gens d'Ezéchias Roi de Juda ont copiés. | These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. |
| 2 | La gloire de Dieu est de celer la chose; et la gloire des Rois est de sonder les affaires. | It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. |
| 3 | Il n'y a pas moyen de sonder les cieux à cause de leur hauteur; ni la terre à cause de sa profondeur; ni le coeur des Rois. | As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable. |
| 4 | Ôte les écumes de l'argent, et il en sortira une bague au fondeur; | Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner: |
| 5 | Ôte le méchant de devant le Roi, et son trône sera affermi par la justice. | Take away the wicked [from] before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness. |
| 6 | Ne fais point le magnifique devant le Roi, et ne te tiens point dans la place des Grands. | Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men: |
| 7 | Car il vaut mieux qu'on te dise; monte ici, que si on t'abaissait devant celui qui est en dignité, lequel tes yeux auront vu. | For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen. |
| 8 | Ne te hâte pas de sortir pour quereller, de peur que tu ne saches que faire à la fin, après que ton prochain t'aura rendu confus. | Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame. |
| 9 | Traite tellement ton différend avec ton prochain, que tu ne révèles point le secret d'un autre; | Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself], And disclose not the secret of another; |
| 10 | De peur que celui qui l'écoute ne te le reproche, et que tu n'en reçoives un opprobre qui ne s'efface point. | Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away. |
| 11 | Telles que sont des pommes d'or émaillées d'argent, telle est la parole dite comme il faut. | A word fitly spoken Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver. |
| 12 | Quand on reprend le sage qui a l'oreille attentive, c'est comme une bague d'or, ou comme un joyau de fin or. | [As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [So is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. |
| 13 | L'ambassadeur fidèle est à ceux qui l'envoient, comme la froideur de la neige au temps de la moisson, et il restaure l'âme de son maître. | As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [So is] a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters. |
| 14 | Celui qui se vante d'une fausse libéralité, est comme les nuées et le vent sans pluie. | [As] clouds and wind without rain, [So is] he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely. |
| 15 | Le capitaine est fléchi par la patience, et la langue douce brise les os. | By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone. |
| 16 | Quand tu auras trouvé du miel, n'en mange qu'autant qu'il t'en faut, de peur qu'en étant soûlé, tu ne le rendes. | Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. |
| 17 | Mets rarement ton pied dans la maison de ton prochain, de peur qu'étant rassasié de toi, il ne te haïsse. | Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor`s house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee. |
| 18 | L'homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain, est un marteau, une épée, et une flèche aiguë. | A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. |
| 19 | La confiance qu'on met en celui qui se porte perfidement au temps de la détresse, est une dent qui se rompt, et un pied qui glisse. | Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is [like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. |
| 20 | Celui qui chante des chansons au coeur affligé, est comme celui qui ôte sa robe dans le temps du froid, et comme du vinaigre répandu sur le savon. | [As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart. |
| 21 | Si celui qui te hait a faim, donne-lui à manger du pain; et s'il a soif, donne-lui à boire de l'eau. | If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: |
| 22 | Car tu enlèveras des charbons de feu de dessus sa tête, et l'Eternel te le rendra. | For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee. |
| 23 | Le vent de bise chasse la pluie; et le visage sévère chasse la langue qui médit en secret. | The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. |
| 24 | Il vaut mieux habiter au coin d'un toit, que dans une maison spacieuse avec une femme querelleuse. | It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house. |
| 25 | Les bonnes nouvelles apportées d'un pays éloigné, sont comme de l'eau fraîche à une personne altérée et lasse. | [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country. |
| 26 | Le juste qui bronche devant le méchant, est une fontaine embourbée, et une source gâtée. | [As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, [So is] a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked. |
| 27 | Comme il n'est pas bon de manger trop de miel, aussi il n'y a pas de la gloire pour ceux qui la cherchent avec trop d'ardeur. | It is not good to eat much honey: So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous. |
| 28 | L'homme qui ne peut pas retenir son esprit, est comme une ville où il y a brèche, et qui est sans murailles. | He whose spirit is without restraint Is [like] a city that is broken down and without walls. |
