| 1 | Voici encore des Proverbes de Salomon, recueillis par les d'Ézéchias, roi de Juda. | These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out. |
| 2 | La gloire de Dieu, c'est de cacher les choses; la gloire des rois, c'est de les examiner. | It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. |
| 3 | Le ciel dans sa hauteur, la terre dans sa profondeur, et le coeur des rois sont impénétrables. | As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable. |
| 4 | Ote les scories de l'argent, et il en sortira un vase pour le fondeur. | Take away the dross from the silver, And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner: |
| 5 | Ote le méchant de devant le roi, et son trône s'affermira dans la justice. | Take away the wicked [from] before the king, And his throne shall be established in righteousness. |
| 6 | Ne prends pas des airs superbes devant le roi, et ne te mets pas à la place des grands; | Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king, And stand not in the place of great men: |
| 7 | car il vaut mieux qu'on te dise : « Monte ici », que si l'on t'humilie devant le prince que tes yeux ont vu. | For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom thine eyes have seen. |
| 8 | Ne pars pas trop vite en contestation, de peur qu'à la fin tu ne saches que faire. | Go not forth hastily to strive, Lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame. |
| 9 | Lorsque ton prochain t'aura outragé, défends ta cause contre ton prochain, mais ne révèle pas le secret d'un autre, | Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself], And disclose not the secret of another; |
| 10 | de peur que celui qui l'apprendra ne te couvre de honte, et que ton ignominie ne s'efface pas. | Lest he that heareth it revile thee, And thine infamy turn not away. |
| 11 | Comme des pommes d'or sur des ciselures d'argent, ainsi est une parole dite à propos. | A word fitly spoken Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver. |
| 12 | Comme un anneau d'or et un ornement d'or fin, ainsi est le sage qui reprend une oreille docile. | [As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [So is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. |
| 13 | Comme la fraîcheur de la neige au temps de la moisson, ainsi est le messager fidèle pour ceux qui l'envoient; il réjouit l'âme de son maître. | As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [So is] a faithful messenger to them that send him; For he refresheth the soul of his masters. |
| 14 | Des nuages et du vent sans pluie, tel est l'homme qui se glorifie de présents mensongers. | [As] clouds and wind without rain, [So is] he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely. |
| 15 | Par la patience le juge se laisse persuader, et une langue douce peut briser des os. | By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh the bone. |
| 16 | Si tu trouves du miel, n'en mange que ce qui te suffit, de peur que, rassasié, tu ne le vomisses. | Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. |
| 17 | Mets rarement le pied dans la maison de ton prochain, de peur que, fatigué de toi, il ne te haïsse. | Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor`s house, Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee. |
| 18 | Une massue, une épée et une flèche aiguë, tel est l'homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain. | A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. |
| 19 | Une dent cassée et un pied qui glisse, c'est la confiance qu'inspire un perfide au jour du malheur. | Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is [like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. |
| 20 | Oter son manteau un jour de froid, répandre du vinaigre sur du nitre, ainsi fait celui qui dit des chansons à un coeur affligé. | [As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon soda, So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart. |
| 21 | Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui du pain à manger, s'il a soif, donne-lui de l'eau à boire; | If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: |
| 22 | car tu amasses ainsi des charbons sur sa tête, et Yahweh te récompensera. | For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, And Jehovah will reward thee. |
| 23 | Le vent du nord enfante la pluie, et la langue qui médit en secret, un visage irrité. | The north wind bringeth forth rain: So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. |
| 24 | Mieux vaut habiter à l'angle d'un toit, que de rester avec une femme querelleuse. | It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house. |
| 25 | De l'eau fraîche pour une personne altérée, telle est une bonne nouvelle venant d'une terre lointaine. | [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country. |
| 26 | Une fontaine troublée et une source corrompue, tel est le juste qui chancelle devant le méchant. | [As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, [So is] a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked. |
| 27 | Il n'est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel; ainsi celui qui veut sonder la majesté divine sera accablé par sa gloire. | It is not good to eat much honey: So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous. |
| 28 | Une ville forcée qui n'a plus de murailles, tel est l'homme qui ne peut se contenir. | He whose spirit is without restraint Is [like] a city that is broken down and without walls. |
