| 5 | A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might | L'uomo saggio è pieno di forza, e l'uomo che ha conoscenza accresce la sua potenza. |
| 6 | For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. | Perché con saggi consigli potrai fare la tua guerra, e nel gran numero di consiglieri c'è vittoria. |
| 7 | Wisdom is too high for a fool: He openeth not his mouth in the gate. | La sapienza è troppo alta per lo stolto, egli non apre mai la bocca alla porta della città. |
| 8 | He that deviseth to do evil, Men shall call him a mischief-maker. | Chi pensa di fare il male sarà chiamato maestro di intrighi. |
| 9 | The thought of foolishness is sin; And the scoffer is an abomination to men. | Il pensiero di stoltezza è peccato e lo schernitore è un abominio per gli uomini. |
| 10 | If thou faint in the day of adversity, Thy strength is small. | Se vieni meno nel giorno dell'avversità, la tua forza è molto poca. |
| 11 | Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back. | Libera quelli che sono trascinati verso la morte e trattieni quelli che sono portati al macello. |
| 12 | If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? | 13 | My son, eat thou honey, for it is good; And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste: | Figlio mio, mangia il miele perché è buono; un favo di miele sarà dolce al tuo palato. |
| 14 | So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul; If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward, And thy hope shall not be cut off. | Così sarà la conoscenza della sapienza per la tua anima. Se la trovi, ci sarà un futuro e la tua speranza non sarà distrutta. |
| 15 | Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous; Destroy not his resting-place: | O empio, non insidiare la dimora del giusto, non devastare il suo luogo di riposo, |
| 16 | For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; But the wicked are overthrown by calamity. | perché il giusto cade sette volte e si rialza, ma gli empi sono travolti nella sventura. |
| 17 | Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown; | Quando il tuo nemico cade, non rallegrarti; quando è atterrato, il tuo cuore non gioisca, |
| 18 | Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him, And he turn away his wrath from him. | perché l'Eterno non veda e gli dispiaccia e non allontani da lui la sua ira. |
| 19 | Fret not thyself because of evil-doers; Neither be thou envious at the wicked: | Non irritarti a motivo di chi fa il male e non portare invidia agli empi, |
| 20 | For there shall be no reward to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out. | perché non ci sarà avvenire per il malvagio; la lampada degli empi sarà spenta. |
| 21 | My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king; [And] company not with them that are given to change: | Figlio mio, temi l'Eterno e il re, non associarti con quelli che vogliono cambiare; |
| 22 | For their calamity shall rise suddenly; And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it? | la loro calamità sopraggiungerà improvvisa, e la rovina di entrambi chi la conosce? |
| 23 | These also are [sayings] of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good. | Anche queste cose sono per i saggi. Non è bene usare preferenze personali in giudizio. |
| 24 | He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him: | Chi dice all'empio: Tu sei giusto i popoli lo malediranno e le nazioni lo esecreranno. |
| 25 | But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, And a good blessing shall come upon them. | Ma quelli che rimproverano l'empio troveranno delizie, e su di loro scenderanno le migliori benedizioni. |
| 26 | He kisseth the lips Who giveth a right answer. | Chi dà una risposta giusta dà un bacio sulle labbra. |
| 27 | Prepare thy work without, And make it ready for thee in the field; And afterwards build thy house. | Metti in ordine i tuoi affari di fuori metti a posto i tuoi campi e poi costruirai la tua casa. |
| 28 | Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause; And deceive not with thy lips. | Non testimoniare senza motivo contro il tuo prossimo e non ingannare con le tue labbra. |
| 29 | Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work. | Non dire: Come ha fatto a me, così farò a lui; gli renderò secondo l'opera sua. |
| 30 | I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; | Son passato presso il campo del pigro e presso la vigna dell'uomo privo di senno; |
| 31 | And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, The face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down. | ed ecco, dovunque crescevano le spine, i rovi ne coprivano il suolo e il muro di pietre era crollato. |
| 32 | Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction: | Osservando ciò, riflettei attentamente; da quel che vidi ne ricavai una lezione: |
| 33 | [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep; | dormire un po' sonnecchiare un po' incrociare un po' le braccia per riposare; |
| 34 | So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man. | così la tua povertà verrà come un ladro e la tua indigenza come un uomo armato. |
