| 4 | Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. | Ne travaille point à t'enrichir; et désiste-toi de la résolution que tu en as prise. |
| 5 | Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. | Jetteras-tu tes yeux sur ce qui bientôt n'est plus? car certainement il se fera des ailes; il s'envolera, comme un aigle dans les cieux. |
| 6 | Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: | Ne mange point la viande de celui qui a l'oeil malin, et ne désire point ses friandises. |
| 7 | For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. | Car selon qu'il a pensé en son âme, tel est-il. Il te dira bien: mange et bois, mais son coeur n'est point avec toi. |
| 8 | The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. | Ton morceau, que tu auras mangé, tu le voudrais rendre, et tu auras perdu tes paroles agréables. |
| 9 | Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. | Ne parle point, le fou t'écoutant; car il méprisera la prudence de ton discours. |
| 10 | Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: | Ne recule point la borne ancienne, et n'entre point dans les champs des orphelins: |
| 11 | For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee. | Car leur garant est puissant; il défendra leur cause contre toi. |
| 12 | Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. | Applique ton coeur à l'instruction, et tes oreilles aux paroles de science. |
| 13 | Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. | N'écarte point du jeune enfant la correction; quand tu l'auras frappé de la verge, il n'en mourra point. |
| 14 | Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. | Tu le frapperas avec la verge, mais tu délivreras son âme du sépulcre. |
| 15 | My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. | Mon fils, si ton coeur est sage, mon coeur s'en réjouira, oui, moi-même. |
| 16 | Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. | Certes mes reins tressailliront de joie, quand tes lèvres proféreront des choses droites. |
| 17 | Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. | Que ton coeur ne porte point d'envie aux pécheurs; mais adonne-toi à la crainte de l'Eternel tout le jour. |
| 18 | For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. | Car véritablement il y aura bonne issue, et ton attente ne sera point retranchée. |
| 19 | Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. | Toi, mon fils, écoute, et sois sage; et fais marcher ton coeur dans cette voie. |
| 20 | Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: | Ne fréquente point les ivrognes, ni les gourmands. |
| 21 | For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. | Car l'ivrogne et le gourmand seront appauvris; et le long dormir fait vêtir des robes déchirées. |
| 22 | Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. | Ecoute ton père, comme étant celui qui t'a engendré; et ne méprise point ta mère, quand elle sera devenue vieille. |
| 23 | Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. | Achète la vérité, et ne la vends point; achète la sagesse, l'instruction et la prudence. |
| 24 | The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. | Le père du juste s'égayera extrêmement; et celui qui aura engendré le sage, en aura de la joie. |
| 25 | Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. | Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent, et que celle qui t'a enfanté s'égaye. |
| 26 | My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. | Mon fils, donne-moi ton coeur, et que tes yeux prennent garde à mes voies. |
| 27 | For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. | Car la femme débauchée est une fosse profonde, et l'étrangère est un puits de détresse; |
| 28 | She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. | Aussi se tient-elle en embûche, comme après la proie: et elle multipliera les transgresseurs entre les hommes. |
| 29 | Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? | A qui est: malheur à moi? à qui est: hélas? à qui les débats? à qui le bruit? à qui les blessures sans cause? à qui la rougeur des yeux? |
| 30 | They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. | A ceux qui s'arrêtent auprès du vin, et qui vont chercher le vin mixtionné. |
| 31 | Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. | Ne regarde point le vin quand il se montre rouge, et quand il donne sa couleur dans la coupe, et qu'il coule droit. |
| 32 | At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. | Il mord par derrière comme un serpent, et il pique comme un basilic. |
| 33 | Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. | Puis tes yeux regarderont les femmes étrangères, et ton coeur parlera en insensé. |
| 34 | Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. | Et tu seras comme celui qui dort au coeur de la mer, et comme celui qui dort au sommet du mât. |
| 35 | They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. | On m'a battu, diras-tu, et je n'en ai point été malade; on m'a moulu de coups, et je ne l'ai point senti; quand me réveillerai-je? Je me remettrai encore à le chercher. |
