1Mieux vaut un morceau de pain sec, avec la paix, Qu'une maison pleine de viandes, avec des querelles.Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife.
2Un serviteur prudent domine sur le fils qui fait honte, Et il aura part à l'héritage au milieu des frères.A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren.
3Le creuset est pour l'argent, et le fourneau pour l'or ; Mais celui qui éprouve les coeurs, c'est l'Éternel.The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts.
4Le méchant est attentif à la lèvre inique, Le menteur prête l'oreille à la langue pernicieuse.A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [And] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5Celui qui se moque du pauvre outrage celui qui l'a fait ; Celui qui se réjouit d'un malheur ne restera pas impuni.Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; [And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
6Les enfants des enfants sont la couronne des vieillards, Et les pères sont la gloire de leurs enfants.Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.Children`s children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers.
7Les paroles distinguées ne conviennent pas à un insensé ; Combien moins à un noble les paroles mensongères !Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince.
8Les présents sont une pierre précieuse aux yeux de qui en reçoit ; De quelque côté qu'ils se tournes, ils ont du succès.A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.A bribe is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
9Celui qui couvre une faute cherche l'amour, Et celui qui la rappelle dans ses discours divise les amis.He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends.
10Une réprimande fait plus d'impression sur l'homme intelligent Que cent coups sur l'insensé.A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding Than a hundred stripes into a fool.
11Le méchant ne cherche que révolte, Mais un messager cruel sera envoyé contre lui.An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12Rencontre une ourse privée de ses petits, Plutôt qu'un insensé pendant sa folie.Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly.
13De celui qui rend le mal pour le bien Le mal ne quittera point la maison.Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house.
14Commencer une querelle, c'est ouvrir une digue ; Avant que la dispute s'anime, retire-toi.The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.
15Celui qui absout le coupable et celui qui condamne le juste Sont tous deux en abomination à l'Éternel.He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.
16A quoi sert l'argent dans la main de l'insensé ? A acheter la sagesse ?... Mais il n'a point de sens.Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding?
17L'ami aime en tout temps, Et dans le malheur il se montre un frère.A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity.
18L'homme dépourvu de sens prend des engagements, Il cautionne son prochain.A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor.
19Celui qui aime les querelles aime le péché ; Celui qui élève sa porte cherche la ruine.He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction.
20Un coeur faux ne trouve pas le bonheur, Et celui dont la langue est perverse tombe dans le malheur.He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21Celui qui donne naissance à un insensé aura du chagrin ; Le père d'un fou ne peut pas se réjouir.He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.He that begetteth a fool [doeth it] to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy.
22Un coeur joyeux est un bon remède, Mais un esprit abattu dessèche les os.A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.
23Le méchant accepte en secret des présents, Pour pervertir les voies de la justice.A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice.
24La sagesse est en face de l'homme intelligent, Mais les yeux de l'insensé sont à l'extrémité de la terre.Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25Un fils insensé fait le chagrin de son père, Et l'amertume de celle qui l'a enfanté.A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him.
26Il n'est pas bon de condamner le juste à une amende, Ni de frapper les nobles à cause de leur droiture.Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.Also to punish the righteous is not good, [Nor] to smite the noble for [their] uprightness.
27Celui qui retient ses paroles connaît la science, Et celui qui a l'esprit calme est un homme intelligent.He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28L'insensé même, quand il se tait, passe pour sage ; Celui qui ferme ses lèvres est un homme intelligent.Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.
