| 1 | And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams. | Et Balaam dit à Balac: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et prépare-moi ici sept veaux et sept béliers. |
| 2 | And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram. | Et Balac fit comme Balaam avait dit; et Balac offrit avec Balaam un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel. |
| 3 | And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place. | Puis Balaam dit à Balac: Tiens-toi auprès de ton holocauste, et je m'en irai; peut-être que l'Eternel viendra à ma rencontre, et je te rapporterai tout ce qu'il m'aura fait voir; ainsi il se retira à l'écart. |
| 4 | And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram. | Et Dieu vint au-devant de Balaam, et Balaam lui dit: J'ai dressé sept autels, et j'ai sacrifié un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel. |
| 5 | And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak. | Et l'Eternel mit la parole en la bouche de Balaam, et lui dit: Retourne à Balac, et lui parle ainsi. |
| 6 | And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab. | Il s'en retourna donc vers lui; et voici, il se tenait auprès de son holocauste, tant lui que tous les Seigneurs de Moab. |
| 7 | And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. | Alors Balaam proféra son discours sentencieux, et dit: Balac, Roi de Moab, m'a fait venir d'Aram, des montagnes d'Orient, en me disant: Viens, maudis-moi Jacob; viens, dis-je, déteste Israël. |
| 8 | How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied? | Mais comment le maudirai-je? le Dieu Fort ne l'a point maudit; et comment le détesterai-je? l'Eternel ne l'a point détesté. |
| 9 | For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations. | Car je le regarderai du sommet des rochers, et je le contemplerai des coteaux. Voilà, ce peuple habitera à part, et il ne sera point mis entre les nations. |
| 10 | Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his! | Qui est-ce qui comptera la poudre de Jacob, et le nombre de la quatrième partie d'Israël? Que je meure de la mort des justes, et que ma fin soit semblable à la leur! |
| 11 | And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether. | Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Que m'as-tu fait? Je t'avais pris pour maudire mes ennemis, et voici, tu les as bénis très-expressément. |
| 12 | And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth? | Et il répondit, et dit: Ne prendrais-je pas garde de dire ce que l'Eternel aura mis en ma bouche? |
| 13 | And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence. | Alors Balac lui dit: Viens, je te prie, avec moi en un autre lieu d'où tu le puisses voir, car tu en voyais seulement une extrémité, et tu ne le voyais pas tout entier; maudis-le moi de là. |
| 14 | And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. | Puis l'ayant conduit au territoire de Tsophim vers le sommet de Pisga, il bâtit sept autels, et offrit un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel. |
| 15 | And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder. | Alors Balaam dit à Balac: Tiens-toi ici auprès de ton holocauste, et je m'en irai à la rencontre de Dieu, comme j'ai déjà fait. |
| 16 | And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus. | L'Eternel donc vint au-devant de Balaam, et mit la parole en sa bouche, et lui dit: Retourne à Balac, et lui parle ainsi. |
| 17 | And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken? | Et il vint à Balac, et voici, il se tenait auprès de son holocauste, et les Seigneurs de Moab avec lui. Et Balac lui dit: Qu'est-ce que l'Eternel a prononcé? |
| 18 | And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor: | Alors il proféra à haute voix son discours sentencieux, et dit: Lève-toi, Balac, et écoute; fils de Tsippor, prête-moi l'oreille. |
| 19 | God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? | Le Dieu Fort n'est point homme pour mentir, ni fils d'homme pour se repentir; il a dit, et ne le fera-t-il point? il a parlé, et ne le ratifiera-t-il point? |
| 20 | Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it. | Voici, j'ai reçu la parole pour bénir; puisqu'il a béni, je ne le révoquerai point. |
| 21 | He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them. | Il n'a point aperçu d'iniquité en Jacob, ni vu de perversité en Israël; l'Eternel son Dieu est avec lui, et il y a en lui un chant de triomphe royal. |
| 22 | God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn. | Le Dieu Fort qui les a tirés d'Egypte, lui est comme les forces de la Licorne. |
| 23 | Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought! | Car il n'y a point d'enchantements contre Jacob, ni de divinations contre Israël. En pareille saison, il sera dit de Jacob et d'Israël: Qu'est-ce que le Dieu Fort a fait? |
| 24 | Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain. | Voici, ce peuple se lèvera comme un vieux lion, et se haussera comme un lion qui est dans sa force; il ne se couchera point qu'il n'ait mangé la proie, et bu le sang des blessés à mort. |
| 25 | And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all. | Alors Balac dit à Balaam: Et bien, ne le maudis point, mais au moins ne le bénis pas. |
| 26 | But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do? | Et Balaam répondit à Balac, et dit: N'est-ce pas ici ce que je t'ai dit, que tout ce que l'Eternel dirait, je le ferais. |
| 27 | And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence. | Balac dit encore à Balaam: Viens maintenant, je te conduirai en un autre lieu; peut-être que Dieu trouvera bon que tu me le maudisses de là. |
| 28 | And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon. | Balac conduisit donc Balaam au sommet de Péhor, qui regarde du côté de Jésimon. |
| 29 | And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams. | Et Balaam lui dit: Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et apprête-moi ici sept veaux et sept béliers. |
| 30 | And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. | Balac fit donc comme Balaam lui avait dit; puis il offrit un veau et un bélier sur chaque autel. |
