| 2 | Envoie des hommes pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d'Israël. Vous enverrez un homme de chaque Tribu de leurs pères, tous des principaux d'entr'eux. | Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them. |
| 3 | Moïse donc les envoya du désert de Paran, selon le commandement de l'Eternel; et tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d'Israël. | And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Jehovah: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. |
| 4 | Et ce sont ici leurs noms: De la Tribu de Ruben, Sammuah, fils de Zaccur. | And these were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. |
| 5 | De la Tribu de Siméon, Saphat, fils de Hori. | Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. |
| 6 | De la Tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Jéphunné. | Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. |

| 16 | Ce sont là les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour reconnaître le pays. Or Moïse avait nommé Osée, fils de Nun, Josué. | These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. |
| 17 | Moïse donc les envoya pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, et il leur dit: Montez de ce côté vers le Midi, puis vous monterez sur la montagne. | And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country: |
| 18 | Et vous verrez quel est ce pays-là, et quel est le peuple qui l'habite, s'il est fort, ou faible; s'il est en petit ou en grand nombre. | and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; |
| 19 | Et quel est le pays où il habite, s'il est bon ou mauvais; et quelles sont les villes dans lesquelles il habite, si c'est dans des tentes, ou dans des villes closes. | and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; |
| 20 | Et quel est le terroir, s'il est gras ou maigre, s'il y a des arbres, ou non. Ayez bon courage, et prenez du fruit du pays. Or c'était alors le temps des premiers raisins. | and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes. |
| 21 | Etant donc partis, ils examinèrent le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu'à Réhob, à l'entrée de Hamath. | So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. |
| 22 | Ils montèrent donc vers le Midi, et vinrent jusqu'à Hébron, où étaient Ahiman, Sésaï, et Talmaï, issus de Hanak. Or Hébron avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tsohan d'Egypte. | And they went up by the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) |
| 23 | Et ils vinrent jusqu'au torrent d'Escol, et coupèrent de là un sarment de vigne, avec une grappe de raisins; et ils étaient deux à le porter avec un levier. Ils apportèrent aussi des grenades et des figues. | And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a staff between two; [they brought] also of the pomegranates, and of the figs. |
| 24 | Et on appela ce lieu-là Nahal-Escol; à l'occasion de la grappe que les enfants d'Israël y coupèrent. | That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence. |
| 25 | Et au bout de quarante jours ils furent de retour du pays qu'ils étaient allés reconnaître. | And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. |
| 26 | Et étant arrivés, ils vinrent vers Moïse et Aaron, et vers toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël, au désert de Padan en Kadès; et leur ayant fait leur rapport, et à toute l'assemblée, ils leur montrèrent du fruit du pays. | And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. |
| 27 | Ils firent donc leur rapport à Moïse, et lui dirent: Nous avons été au pays où tu nous avais envoyés; et véritablement c'est un pays découlant de lait et de miel, et c'est ici de son fruit. | And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us; and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. |
| 28 | Il y a seulement ceci, que le peuple qui habite au pays est robuste, et les villes sont closes, et fort grandes; nous y avons vu aussi les enfants de Hanak. | Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, [and] very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. |
| 29 | Les Hamalécites habitent au pays du Midi; et les Héthiens, les Jébusiens, et les Amorrhéens habitent en la montagne; et les Cananéens habitent le long de la mer, et vers le rivage du Jourdain. | Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan. |
| 30 | Alors Caleb fit taire le peuple devant Moïse, et dit: Montons hardiment, et possédons ce pays-là, car certainement nous y serons les plus forts. | And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. |
| 31 | Mais les hommes qui étaient montés avec lui, dirent: Nous ne saurions monter contre ce peuple-là, car il est plus fort que nous. | But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. |
| 32 | Et ils décrièrent devant les enfants d'Israël le pays qu'ils avaient examiné, en disant: Le pays par lequel nous sommes passés pour le reconnaître est un pays qui consume ses habitants, et tous le peuple que nous y avons vus, sont des gens de grande stature. | And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. |
| 33 | Nous y avons vu aussi des géants, des enfants de Hanak, de la race des géants; et nous ne paraissions auprès d'eux que comme des sauterelles. | And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. |
