Car Yahweh a une querelle avec son peuple; et il va plaider contre Israël. – | Hear, O ye mountains, Jehovah`s controversy, and ye enduring foundations of the earth; for Jehovah hath a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. |
| 3 | Mon peuple, que t'ai-je fait, en quoi t'ai-je causé de la peine ? Réponds-moi. | O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. |
| 4 | Car je t'ai fait monter du pays d'Egypte, je t'ai racheté de la maison de servitude, et j'ai envoyé devant toi Moïse, Aaron et Marie. | For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. |
| 5 | Mon peuple, souviens-toi donc du conseil qu'avait donné Balac, roi de Moab, et de ce que lui répondit Balaam, fils de Béor; souviens-lui de Sétim jusqu'à Galgala, afin que tu connaisses les justices de Yahweh. | O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him; [remember] from Shittim unto Gilgal, that ye may know the righteous acts of Jehovah. |
| 6 | Avec quoi me présenterai-je devant Yahweh, me prosternerai-je devant le Dieu de là-haut ? Me présenterai-je devant lui avec des holocaustes, avec des veaux d'un an ? | Wherewith shall I come before Jehovah, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old? |
| 7 | Yahweh agréera-t-il des milliers de béliers, des myriades de torrents d'huile ? Donnerai-je mon premier-né pour ma faute, le fruit de mes entrailles pour le péché de mon âme ? - | will Jehovah be pleased with thousands of rams, [or] with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? |
| 8 | On t'a fait connaître, ô homme, ce qui est bon, et ce que Yahweh demande de toi : c'est de pratiquer la justice, d'aimer la miséricorde, et de marcher humblement avec ton Dieu. | He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Jehovah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God? |
| 9 | La voix de Yahweh crie à la ville, - et c'est sagesse de prendre garde à votre nom : - Écoutez la verge, et celui qui l'a ordonnée ! | The voice of Jehovah crieth unto the city, and [the man of] wisdom will see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. |
| 10 | Y a-t-il encore dans la maison du méchant des trésors iniques, et un épha amoindri, abominable ? | Are there yet treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and a scant measure that is abominable? |
| 11 | Serais-je pur avec des balances injustes, et de faux poids dans le sac ? | Shall I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights? |
| 12 | Les riches de cette ville sont pleins de violence, ses habitants profèrent le mensonge, et leur langue n'est que tromperie dans leur bouche. | For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. |
| 13 | Moi, à mon tour, je te frapperai de coups mortels, je te dévasterai à cause de tes péchés. | Therefore I also have smitten thee with a grievous wound; I have made thee desolate because of thy sins. |
| 14 | Tu mangeras, mais sans te rassasier, et ta faim sera au-dedans de toi ; tu éloigneras, mais sans rien sauver, et ce que tu sauveras, je le livrerai à l'épée. | Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy humiliation shall be in the midst of thee: and thou shalt put away, but shalt not save; and that which thou savest will I give up to the sword. |
| 15 | Tu sèmeras, mais tu ne moissonneras pas ; tu presseras l'olive, mais tu ne t'oindras pas d'huile ; le moût, mais tu ne boiras pas de vin. | Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not anoint thee with oil; and the vintage, but shalt not drink the wine. |
| 16 | On observe les ordonnances d'Amri, et toutes les pratiques de la maison d'Achab, et vous marchez d'après leurs conseils, afin que je vous livre à la destruction, et les habitants du pays aux sifflets, et que vous portiez l'opprobre de mon peuple. | For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I may make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof a hissing: and ye shall bear the reproach of my people. |
