| 1 | And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. | Or, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ses instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes. |
| 2 | Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, | Jean, dans sa prison, ayant entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ, lui envoya dire par ses disciples : |
| 3 | And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? | "Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ?" |
| 4 | Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: | Jésus leur répondit : "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez : |
| 5 | The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. | les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres sont évangélisés. |
| 6 | And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. | Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute ! " |
| 7 | And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? | Comme ils s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean : |
| 8 | But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. | "Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? Qu'êtes-vous donc aller voir ? Un homme vêtu d'(habits) somptueux ? Mais ceux qui portent des (habits) somptueux se trouvent dans les demeures des rois. |
| 9 | But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. | Mais qu'êtes-vous allés (voir) ? Voir un prophète ? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète. |
| 10 | For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. | C'est celui dont il est écrit : Voici que j'envoie mon messager en avant de vous, pour vous préparer la voie devant vous. |
| 11 | Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. | En vérité, je vous le dis, parmi les fils de la femme, il ne s'en est pas levé de plus grand que Jean le Baptiste; mais le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui. |
| 12 | And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. | Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent, le royaume des cieux est forcé, et ce sont les violents qui s'en emparent. |
| 13 | For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. | Car tous les prophètes et la Loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean. |
| 14 | And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. | Et si vous voulez comprendre, lui-même est Elie qui doit venir. |
| 15 | He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. | Que celui qui a des oreilles entende ! |
| 16 | But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, | Mais à qui comparerai-je cette génération ? Elle est semblable à des enfants assis sur les places publiques, qui crient à leurs compagnons : |
| 17 | And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. | "Nous avons joué de la flûte pour vous, et vous n'avez point dansé; nous avons chanté une lamentation, et vous n'avez point frappé (votre poitrine)." |
| 18 | For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. | Jean en effet est venu, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et ils disent : Il est possédé du démon." |
| 19 | The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. | Le Fils de l'homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et ils disent : "C'est un mangeur et un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs."Et la Sagesse a été reconnue juste par ses oeuvres." |
| 20 | Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: | Alors il se mit à faire des reproches aux villes où il avait opéré le plus grand nombre de ses miracles, parce qu'elles n'avaient pas fait pénitence : |
| 21 | Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. | "Malheur à toi, Corozaïn ! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde ! Car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles auraient fait pénitence avec le sac et la cendre. |
| 22 | But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. | Aussi bien, je vous le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour Tyr et Sidon que pour vous. |
| 23 | And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. | Et toi, Capharnaüm, est-ce que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel ? Tu seras abaissée jusqu'aux enfers; car si les miracles qui ont été faits dans tes murs, avaient été faits dans Sodome, elle serait restée debout jusqu'à ce jour. |
| 24 | But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. | Du reste, je te le dis, il y aura, au jour du jugement, moins de rigueur pour le pays de Sodome que pour toi." |
| 25 | At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. | En ce temps-là, Jésus prit la parole et dit : "Je vous bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que vous avez caché ces choses aux sages et aux prudents, et les avez révélées aux simples. |
| 26 | Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. | Oui, Père, car tel fut votre bon plaisir. |
| 27 | All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. | Toutes choses m'ont été remises par mon Père; et personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n'est le Père, et personne ne connaît le Père, si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils aura bien voulu le révéler. |
| 28 | Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. | Venez à moi, vous tous qui êtes fatigués et ployez sous le fardeau, et je vous soulagerai. |
| 29 | Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. | Prenez sur vous mon joug, et recevez mes leçons : je suis doux et humble de coeur; et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes, |
| 30 | For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. | car mon joug est doux et mon fardeau léger." |
