| 3 | Ayant entendu parler de Jésus, il lui députa quelques-uns des anciens des Juifs, le priant de venir sauver son serviteur. | And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant. |
| 4 | Ceux-ci, étant arrivés auprès de Jésus, le priaient avec grande instance, disant : "Il mérite que vous fassiez cela pour lui; | And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him; |
| 5 | car il aime notre nation, et c'est lui qui nous a bâti la synagogue." | for he loveth our nation, and himself built us our synagogue. |
| 6 | Et Jésus s'en alla avec eux. Déjà il était non loin de la maison, lorsque le centurion envoya des amis pour lui dire : "Seigneur, ne prenez pas cette peine, car je ne suis pas digne que vous entriez sous mon toit; | And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: |
| 7 | aussi ne me suis-je pas même jugé digne de venir vers vous; mais dites un mot et que mon serviteur soit guéri ! | wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. |
| 8 | Car moi qui suis soumis à des chefs, j'ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et je dis à l'un : "Va, "et il va; et à un autre : "Viens, "et il vient; et à mon serviteur : "Fais ceci, "et il le fait." | For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. |
| 9 | En entendant cela, Jésus fut dans l'admiration pour lui et, se tournant, il dit à la foule qui le suivait : "Je vous le dis : même en Israël je n'ai pas trouvé une si grande foi." | And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. |
| 10 | Et s'en étant retournés à la maison, les envoyés trouvèrent le serviteur en bonne santé. | And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole. |
| 11 | Or il se rendit ensuite à une ville nommée Naïn; ses disciples et une foule nombreuse faisaient route avec lui. | And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went to a city called Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude. |
| 12 | Comme il approchait de la porte de la ville, voilà qu'on emportait un mort, fils unique de sa mère, laquelle était veuve, et une foule considérable (de gens) de la ville étaient avec elle. | Now when he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. |
| 13 | Le Seigneur l'ayant vue, fut touché de compassion pour elle, et il lui dit : Ne pleurez pas. | And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. |
| 14 | Et s'approchant, il toucha le cercueil, et les porteurs s'arrêtèrent; et il dit : "Jeune homme, je te le dis, lève-toi ! " | And he came nigh and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. |
| 15 | Et le mort se dressa sur son séant et se mit à parler; et il le rendit à sa mère. | And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. |
| 16 | Tous furent saisis de crainte, et ils glorifiaient Dieu en disant : "Un grand prophète s'est levé parmi nous, "et : "Dieu a visité son peuple." | And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God hath visited his people. |
| 17 | Et cette parole (prononcée) à son sujet se répandit dans toute la Judée et dans tout le pays d'alentour. | And this report went forth concerning him in the whole of Judaea, and all the region round about. |
| 18 | Les disciples de Jean lui rapportèrent tout cela. Et Jean appela deux de ses disciples, | And the disciples of John told him of all these things. |
| 19 | qu'il envoya vers Jésus pour lui dire : "Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ?" | And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to the Lord, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another? |
| 20 | Arrivés près de lui, les hommes lui dirent : "Jean-Baptiste nous a envoyés vers vous pour dire : Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ?" | And when the men were come unto him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another? |
| 21 | En ce même moment il guérit un grand nombre de personnes de maladies, d'infirmités et d'esprits mauvais, et il accorda de voir à beaucoup d'aveugles. | In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. |
| 22 | Puis il leur répondit : "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous avez vu et entendu : les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, les pauvres sont évangélisés. | And he answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good tidings preached to them. |
| 23 | Heureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute ! " | And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me. |
| 24 | Lorsque les envoyés de Jean furent partis, il se mit à dire aux foules, au sujet de Jean : "Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? | And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? |
| 25 | Qu'êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme vêtu d'habits somptueux ? Mais ceux qui sont en habillement magnifique et dans les délices se trouvent dans les palais des rois. | But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings` courts. |
| 26 | Enfin, qu'êtes-vous allés voir ? Un prophète ? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète. | But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. |
| 27 | C'est celui dont il est écrit : Voici que j'envoie mon messager en avant de vous, pour vous préparer la voie devant vous. | This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee. |
| 28 | Je vous le dis en effet, parmi les fils de la femme, nul n'est plus grand que Jean; mais le plus petit dans le royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui. | I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there is none greater than John: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of God is greater than he. |
| 29 | Tout le peuple qui l'a entendu et les publicains ont reconnu la justice de Dieu, en se faisant baptiser du baptême de Jean; | And all the people when they heard, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. |
| 30 | mais les Pharisiens et les docteurs de la Loi ont rendu vain pour eux le dessein de Dieu, en ne se faisant pas baptiser par lui. | But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him. |
| 31 | A qui donc comparerai-je les hommes de cette génération ? A qui sont-ils semblables ? | Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation, and to what are they like? |
| 32 | Ils sont semblables à des enfants qui sont assis sur une place publique et qui se crient les uns aux autres : "Nous vous avons joué de la flûte pour vous, et vous n'avez pas dansé; nous vous avons chanté une lamentation, et vous n'avez point pleuré." | They are like unto children that sit in the marketplace, and call one to another; who say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not weep. |
| 33 | Jean le Baptiste, en effet, est venu, ne mangeant point de pain et ne buvant point de vin, et vous dites : "Il est possédé du démon." | For John the Baptist is come eating no bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon. |
| 34 | Le Fils de l'homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et vous dites : "C'est un mangeur et un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs." | The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! |
| 35 | Et la Sagesse a été reconnue juste par tous ses enfants." | And wisdom is justified of all her children. |
| 36 | Un Pharisien l'invitant à manger avec lui, il entra dans la maison du Pharisien et se mit à table. | And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he entered into the Pharisee`s house, and sat down to meat. |
| 37 | Et voici qu'une femme qui, dans la ville, était pécheresse, ayant appris qu'il était à table dans la maison du Pharisien, apporta un vase d'albâtre (plein) de parfum; | And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she knew that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee`s house, she brought an alabaster cruse of ointment, |
| 38 | et se tenant par derrière, près de ses pieds, tout en pleurs, elle se mit à arroser ses pieds de ses larmes, et elle essuyait avec les cheveux de sa tête et embrassait ses pieds, et elle les oignait de parfum. | and standing behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. |
| 39 | A cette vue, le Pharisien qui l'avait invité se dit en lui-même : "S'il était prophète, il saurait qui et de quelle espèce est la femme qui le touche, que c'est une pécheresse." | Now when the Pharisee that had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. |
| 40 | Et prenant la parole, Jésus lui dit : "Simon, j'ai quelque chose à te dire."Et lui : "Maître, parlez, "dit-il. | And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Teacher, say on. |
| 41 | "Un créancier avait deux débiteurs : l'un devait cinq cents deniers et l'autre cinquante. | A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred shillings, and the other fifty. |
| 42 | Comme ils n'avaient pas de quoi rendre, il fit remise à tous les deux. Lequel donc d'entre eux l'aimera davantage ?" | When they had not [wherewith] to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most? |
| 43 | Simon répondit : "Celui, je pense, auquel il a remis le plus."Il lui dit : "Tu as bien jugé." | Simon answered and said, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. |
| 44 | Et, se tournant vers la femme, il dit à Simon : "Vois-tu cette femme ? Je suis entré dans ta maison, et tu n'as pas versé d'eau sur mes pieds; mais elle, elle a arrosé mes pieds de (ses) larmes et les a essuyés avec ses cheveux. | And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wetted my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. |
| 45 | Tu ne m'as point donné de baiser; mais elle, depuis que je suis entré, elle ne cessait pas d'embrasser mes pieds. | Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. |
| 46 | Tu n'as pas oint ma tête d'huile; mais elle, elle a oint mes pieds de parfum. | My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but she hath anointed my feet with ointment. |
| 47 | C'est pourquoi, je te le dis, ses nombreux péchés lui sont pardonnés, parce qu'elle a beaucoup aimé; mais celui à qui l'on pardonne peu, aime peu." | Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, [the same] loveth little. |
| 48 | Et à elle, il dit : "Tes péchés sont pardonnés." | And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. |
| 49 | Et les convives se mirent à se dire en eux-mêmes : "Qui est celui-ci qui même pardonne les péchés ?" | And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that even forgiveth sins? |
| 50 | Et il dit à la femme : "Ta foi t'a sauvée, va en paix." | And he said unto the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. |
