| 1 | Sur ces entrefaites, la foule s'étant amassée par milliers, au point qu'on s'écrasait les uns les autres, il se mit à dire d'abord à l'adresse de ses disciples : "Gardez-vous du levain des Pharisiens, qui est l'hypocrisie. | In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. |

| 3 | C'est pourquoi, tout ce que vous aurez dit dans les ténèbres sera entendu au grand jour, et ce que vous aurez dit à l'oreille dans les celliers sera publié sur les toits. | Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light; and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. |
| 4 | Je le dis à vous, mes amis : Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, et qui après cela ne peuvent rien faire de plus. | And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. |
| 5 | Mais je vais vous apprendre qui vous devez craindre : craignez celui qui, après avoir tué, a le pouvoir de jeter dans la géhenne; oui, je vous le dis, craignez celui-là. | But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. |
| 6 | Cinq moineaux ne se vendent-ils pas deux as ? Et pas un d'entre eux n'est en oubli devant Dieu. | Are not five sparrows sold for two pence? and not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God. |
| 7 | Mais même les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. Ne craignez pas : vous valez plus que beaucoup de moineaux. | But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not: ye are of more value than many sparrows. |
| 8 | Je vous le dis : celui qui me confessera devant les hommes, le Fils de l'homme le confessera aussi devant les anges de Dieu; | And I say unto you, Every one who shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: |
| 9 | mais celui qui m'aura renié devant les hommes sera renié devant les anges de Dieu. | but he that denieth me in the presence of men shall be denied in the presence of the angels of God. |
| 10 | Et quiconque parlera contre le Fils de l'homme, il y aura rémission pour lui; mais pour qui aura blasphémé contre l'Esprit-Saint, il n'y aura pas de rémission. | And every one who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven. |
| 11 | Quand on vous amènera devant les synagogues, les magistrats et les autorités, ne vous préoccupez pas de la manière dont vous vous défendrez, ni de ce que vous direz; | And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: |
| 12 | car le Saint-Esprit vous enseignera à l'heure même ce qu'il faudra dire." | for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say. |
| 13 | De la foule quelqu'un lui dit : "Maître, dites à mon frère de partager avec moi l'héritage." | And one out of the multitude said unto him, Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me. |
| 14 | Il lui dit : "Homme, qui m'a établi pour être votre juge ou pour faire vos partages ?" | But he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? |
| 15 | Et il leur dit : "Faites attention à vous garder de toute avarice; car, quelqu'un serait-il dans l'abondance, sa vie ne dépend pas des biens qu'il possède." | And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man`s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. |
| 16 | Et il leur dit cette parabole : "Il y avait un homme riche dont le domaine avait beaucoup rapporté. | And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: |
| 17 | Et il se faisait en lui-même cette réflexion : "Que vais-je faire ? car je n'ai pas où ramasser mes récoltes… | and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? |
| 18 | Voici, dit-il, ce que je fais faire : j'abattrai mes greniers, et j'en construirai de plus grands, et j'y ramasserai tout mon blé et mes biens, | And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods. |
| 19 | et je dirai à mon âme : Mon âme, tu as beaucoup de biens en réserve pour beaucoup d'années; repose-toi, mange, bois, festoie ! " | And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. |
| 20 | Or Dieu lui dit : "Insensé ! cette nuit même on va te redemander ton âme; et ce que tu as préparé, pour qui sera-ce ?" | But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? |
| 21 | Ainsi en est-il de celui qui thésaurise pour lui-même et n'est pas riche en vue de Dieu." | So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. |
| 22 | Et il dit à ses disciples : "C'est pourquoi je vous dis : Ne vous inquiétez pas pour (votre) âme de ce que vous mangerez, ni pour votre cops de quoi vous le vêtirez; | And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for [your] life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. |
| 23 | car l'âme est plus que la nourriture et le corps plus que le vêtement. | For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment. |
| 24 | Considérez les corbeaux, qui ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, qui n'ont ni cellier ni grenier, et Dieu les nourrit. Combien plus valez-vous que les oiseaux ! | Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feedeth them: of how much more value are ye than the birds! |
| 25 | Qui de vous, à force soucis, pourrait ajouter une coudée à la longueur de sa vie ? | And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit unto the measure of his life? |
| 26 | Si donc vous ne pouvez pas le moins, pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous du reste ? | If then ye are not able to do even that which is least, why are ye anxious concerning the rest? |
| 27 | Considérez les lis, comment ils ne filent ni ne tissent; or, je vous le dis, Salomon même dans toute sa gloire n'était pas vêtu comme l'un d'eux. | Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. |
| 28 | Si donc Dieu revêt ainsi, dans les champs, l'herbe qui est aujourd'hui et demain sera jetée au four, combien plus (le fera-t-il) pour vous, gens de peu de foi ! | But if God doth so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more [shall he clothe] you, O ye of little faith? |
| 29 | Vous non plus, ne vous mettez pas en quête de ce que vous mangerez ou ce que vous boirez, et ne soyez pas anxieux. | And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. |
| 30 | C'est de tout cela, en effet, que les païens du monde sont en quête; mais votre Père sait que vous avez besoin de cela. | For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. |
| 31 | Au reste, cherchez son royaume, et cela vous sera donné en plus. | Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you. |
| 32 | Ne crains point, petit troupeau, car il a plus à votre Père de vous donner le royaume. | Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father`s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. |
| 33 | Vendez ce que vous avez, et donnez-le en aumône. Faites-vous des bourses qui ne s'usent pas, un trésor inépuisable dans les cieux, où le voleur n'approche pas et la teigne ne détruit point. | Sell that which ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief draweth near, neither moth destroyeth. |
| 34 | Car là où est votre trésor, là aussi sera votre coeur. | For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. |
| 35 | Que vos reins restent ceints et vos lampes allumées ! | Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning; |
| 36 | Et vous, soyez semblables à des hommes qui attendent leur maître à son retour des noces, afin que, lorsqu'il arrivera et frappera, ils lui ouvrent aussitôt. | and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him. |
| 37 | Heureux ces serviteurs que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera veillant ! Je vous le dis en vérité, il se ceindra, les fera mettre à table et passera pour les servir. | Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them. |
| 38 | Et si c'est à la deuxième ou à la troisième veille qu'il arrive et (les) trouve ainsi, heureux sont-ils ! | And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find [them] so blessed are those [servants]. |
| 39 | Sachez-le bien, si le maître de maison savait à quelle heure le voleur doit venir, il ne laisserait pas percer sa maison. | But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through. |
| 40 | Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts, car c'est à l'heure que vous ne pensez pas que le Fils de l'homme viendra." | Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh. |
| 41 | Pierre (lui) dit : "Seigneur, est-ce pour nous que vous dites cette parabole, ou aussi pour tous ?" | And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all? |
| 42 | Le Seigneur répondit : "Quel est donc l'intendant fidèle, prudent, que le maître établira sur sa domesticité pour donner, au temps (voulu), la ration de froment ? | And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? |
| 43 | Heureux ce serviteur, que son maître, à son arrivée, trouvera agissant ainsi ! | Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. |
| 44 | Vraiment, je vous le dis, il l'établira sur tous ses biens. | Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath. |
| 45 | mais si ce serviteur se dit en lui-même : "Mon maître tarde à venir, "et qu'il se mette à battre les serviteurs et les servantes, à manger, à boire et à s'enivrer, | But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; |
| 46 | le maître de ce serviteur viendra au jour où il ne s'y attend pas et à l'heure qu'il ne sait pas, et il le fendra en deux, et lui assignera pour lot celui des infidèles. | the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful. |
| 47 | Ce serviteur qui, ayant connu la volonté de son maître, n'a rien préparé ni agi selon sa volonté, recevra un grand nombre de coups. | And that servant, who knew his lord`s will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many [stripes]; |
| 48 | Quant à celui qui, ne l'ayant pas connue, aura agi de façon à mériter des coups, il n'en recevra qu'un petit nombre. On exigera beaucoup de toux ceux à qui l'on a beaucoup donné; et de celui à qui on a confié beaucoup, on demandera davantage. | but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few [stripes]. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more. |
| 49 | Je suis venu mettre le feu sur la terre, et qu'est-ce que je désire, si déjà il est allumé ? | I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled? |
| 50 | J'ai à recevoir un baptême, et comme je suis dans l'angoisse jusqu'à ce qu'il soit accompli ! | But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! |
| 51 | Pensez-vous que je sois venu donner la paix sur la terre ? Non point, vous dis-je, mais bien la division. | Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: |
| 52 | Car, désormais, cinq dans une maison seront divisés : trois contre deux, et deux contre trois. | for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. |
| 53 | Ils seront divisés : père contre fils et fils contre père, mère contre fille et fille contre la mère, belle-mère contre sa belle-fille et belle-fille contre la belle-mère." | They shall be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against her mother in law. |
| 54 | Il disait encore aux foules : "Quand vous voyez un nuage s'élever au couchant, vous dites aussitôt : "La pluie vient, "et cela arrive ainsi. | And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to pass. |
| 55 | Et quand (vous voyez) souffler le vent du midi, vous dites : "Il fera chaud, "et cela arrive. | And when [ye see] a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass. |
| 56 | Hypocrites, vous savez reconnaître l'aspect de la terre et du ciel; comment ne reconnaissez-vous pas ce temps-ci ? | Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time? |
| 57 | Et pourquoi aussi ne jugez-vous pas, de vous-mêmes, ce qui est juste ? | And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? |
| 58 | En effet, lorsque tu te rends avec ton adversaire chez le magistrat, tâche en chemin de te dégager de lui, de peur qu'il ne te traîne devant le juge, et que le juge ne te livre à l'agent, et que l'agent ne te jette en prison. | For as thou art going with thine adversary before the magistrate, on the way give diligence to be quit of him; lest haply he drag thee unto the judge, and the judge shall deliver thee to the officer, and the officer shall cast thee into prison. |
| 59 | Je te le dis, tu n'en sortiras pas que tu n'aies payé la dernière obole." | I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the very last mite. |
