| 2 | Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; | Comme nous les ont donné à connaître ceux qui les ont vues eux-mêmes dès le commencement, et qui ont été les Ministres de la parole. |
| 3 | It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, | Il m'a aussi semblé bon, après avoir examiné exactement toutes choses depuis le commencement jusques à la fin, très-excellent Théophile, de t'en écrire par ordre; |
| 4 | That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. | Afin que tu connaisses la certitude des choses dont tu as été informé. |
| 5 | THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. | Au temps d'Hérode Roi de Judée, il y avait un certain Sacrificateur nommé Zacharie, du rang d'Abia; et sa femme était des filles d'Aaron, et son nom était Elisabeth. |
| 6 | And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. | Et ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements, et dans toutes les ordonnances du Seigneur, sans reproche. |
| 7 | And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. | Et ils n'avaient point d'enfants, à cause qu'Elisabeth était stérile; et qu'ils étaient fort avancés en âge. |
| 8 | And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, | Or il arriva que comme Zacharie exerçait la sacrificature devant le Seigneur, à son tour; |
| 9 | According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. | Selon la coutume d'exercer la sacrificature, le sort lui échut d'offrir le parfum et d'entrer pour cet effet dans le Temple du Seigneur. |
| 10 | And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. | Et toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prières, à l'heure qu'on offrait le parfum. |
| 11 | And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. | Et l'Ange du Seigneur lui apparut, se tenant au côté droit de l'autel du parfum. |
| 12 | And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. | Et Zacharie fut troublé quand il le vit, et il fut saisi de crainte. |
| 13 | But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. | Mais l'Ange lui dit: Zacharie, ne crains point; car ta prière est exaucée, et Elisabeth ta femme enfantera un fils, et tu appelleras son nom Jean. |
| 14 | And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. | Et tu en auras une grande joie, et plusieurs se réjouiront de sa naissance. |
| 15 | For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. | Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur, et il ne boira ni vin ni cervoise; et il sera rempli du Saint-Esprit dès le ventre de sa mère. |
| 16 | And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. | Et il convertira plusieurs des enfants d'Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu. |
| 17 | And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. | Car il ira devant lui animé de l'esprit et de la vertu d'Elie, afin qu'il ramène les coeurs des pères dans les enfants, et les rebelles à la prudence des justes, pour préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé. |
| 18 | And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. | Alors Zacharie dit à l'Ange: comment connaîtrai-je cela? car je suis vieux, et ma femme est fort âgée. |
| 19 | And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. | Et l'Ange répondant lui dit: Je suis Gabriel qui me tiens devant Dieu, et qui ai été envoyé pour te parler, et pour t'annoncer ces bonnes nouvelles. |
| 20 | And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. | Et voici, tu seras sans parler, et tu ne pourras point parler jusqu'au jour que ces choses arriveront; parce que tu n'as point cru à mes paroles qui s'accompliront en leur temps. |
| 21 | And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. | Or le peuple attendait Zacharie, et on s'étonnait de ce qu'il tardait tant dans le Temple. |
| 22 | And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. | Mais quand il fut sorti, il ne pouvait pas leur parler, et ils connurent qu'il avait vu quelque vision dans le Temple; Car il le leur donnait à entendre par des signes; et il demeura muet. |
| 23 | And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. | Et il arriva que quand les jours de son ministère furent achevés, il retourna en sa maison. |
| 24 | And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, | Et après ces jours-là, Elisabeth sa femme conçut, et elle se cacha l'espace de cinq mois, en disant: |
| 25 | Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. | Certes, le Seigneur en a agi avec moi ainsi aux jours qu'il m'a regardée pour ôter mon opprobre d'entre les hommes. |
| 26 | And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, | Or au sixième mois, l'Ange Gabriel fut envoyé de Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth; |
| 27 | To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. | Vers une Vierge fiancée à un homme nommé Joseph, qui était de la maison de David; et le nom de la Vierge était Marie. |
| 28 | And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. | Et l'Ange étant entré dans le lieu où elle était, lui dit: je te salue, ô toi qui es reçue en grâce; le Seigneur est avec toi; tu es bénie entre les femmes. |
| 29 | And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. | Et quand elle l'eut vu, elle fut fort troublée à cause de ses paroles; et elle considérait en elle-même quelle était cette salutation. |
| 30 | And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. | Et l'Ange lui dit: Marie, ne crains point; car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu. |
| 31 | And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. | Et voici, tu concevras en ton ventre, et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu appelleras son nom JESUS. |
| 32 | He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: | Il sera grand, et sera appelé le Fils du Souverain, et le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père. |
| 33 | And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. | Et il régnera sur la maison de Jacob éternellement, et il n'y aura point de fin à son règne. |
| 34 | Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? | Alors Marie dit à l'Ange: comment arrivera ceci, vu que je ne connais point d'homme? |
| 35 | And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. | Et l'Ange répondant lui dit: le Saint-Esprit surviendra en toi, et la vertu du Souverain t'enombrera; c'est pourquoi ce qui naîtra de toi Saint, sera appelé le Fils de Dieu. |
| 36 | And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. | Et voici, Elizabeth, ta cousine, a aussi conçu un fils en sa vieillesse; et c'est ici le sixième mois de la grossesse de celle qui était appelée stérile. |
| 37 | For with God nothing shall be impossible. | Car rien ne sera impossible à Dieu. |
| 38 | And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. | Et Marie dit: voici la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole! Et l'Ange se retira d'avec elle. |
| 39 | And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; | Or en ces jours-là Marie se leva, et s'en alla en hâte au pays des montagnes dans une ville de Juda. |
| 40 | And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. | Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth. |
| 41 | And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: | Et il arriva qu'aussitôt qu'Elisabeth eut entendu ta salutation de Marie, le petit enfant tressaillit en son ventre, et Elisabeth fut remplie du Saint-Esprit. |
| 42 | And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. | Et elle s'écria à haute voix, et dit: tu es bénie entre les femmes, et béni est le fruit de ton ventre. |
| 43 | And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? | Et d'où me vient ceci, que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne vers moi? |
| 44 | For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. | Car voici, dès que la voix de ta salutation est parvenue à mes oreilles, le petit enfant a tressailli de joie en mon ventre. |
| 45 | And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. | Or bienheureuse est celle qui a cru: car les choses qui lui ont été dites par le Seigneur, auront leur accomplissement. |
| 46 | And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, | Alors Marie dit: Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur; |
| 47 | And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. | Et mon esprit s'est égayé en Dieu, qui est mon Sauveur. |
| 48 | For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. | Car il a regardé la bassesse de sa servante; voici, certes désormais tous les âges me diront bienheureuse. |
| 49 | For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. | Car le Puissant m'a fait de grandes choses, et son Nom est Saint. |
| 50 | And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. | Et sa miséricorde est de génération en génération en faveur de ceux qui le craignent. |
| 51 | He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. | Il a puissamment opéré par son bras; il a dissipé les desseins que les orgueilleux formaient dans leurs coeurs. |
| 52 | He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. | Il a renversé de dessus leurs trônes les puissants, et il a élevé les petits. |
| 53 | He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. | Il a rempli de biens ceux qui avaient faim; il a renvoyé les riches vides. |
| 54 | He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; | Il a pris en sa protection Israël, son serviteur, pour se souvenir de sa miséricorde; |
| 55 | As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. | ( Selon qu'il en a parlé à nos pères, savoir à Abraham et à sa postérité) à jamais. |
| 56 | And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. | Et Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle s'en retourna en sa maison. |
| 57 | Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. | Or le terme d'Elisabeth fut accompli pour accoucher; et elle mit au monde un fils. |
| 58 | And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. | Et ses voisins, et ses parents ayant appris que le Seigneur avait fait éclater sa miséricorde envers elle, s'en réjouissaient avec elle. |
| 59 | And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. | Et il arriva qu'au huitième jour ils vinrent pour circoncire le petit enfant, et ils l'appelaient Zacharie, du nom de son père. |
| 60 | And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. | Mais sa mère prit la parole, et dit: Non, mais il sera nommé Jean. |
| 61 | And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. | Et ils lui dirent: il n'y a personne en ta parenté qui soit appelé de ce nom. |
| 62 | And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. | Alors ils firent signe à son père, qu'il déclarât comment il voulait qu'il fût nommé. |
| 63 | And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. | Et Zacharie ayant demandé des tablettes, écrivit: Jean est son nom; et tous en furent étonnés. |
| 64 | And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. | Et à l'instant sa bouche fut ouverte, et sa langue déliée, tellement qu'il parlait en louant Dieu. |
| 65 | And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. | Et tous ses voisins en furent saisis de crainte; et toutes ces choses furent divulguées dans tout le pays des montagnes de Judée. |
| 66 | And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. | Et tous ceux qui les entendirent les mirent en leur coeur, disant: que sera-ce de ce petit enfant? et la main du Seigneur était avec lui. |
| 67 | And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, | Alors Zacharie son père fut rempli du Saint-Esprit, et il prophétisa, disant: |
| 68 | Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, | Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et délivré son peuple; |
| 69 | And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; | Et de ce qu'il nous a suscité un puissant Sauveur dans la maison de David, son serviteur. |
| 70 | As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: | Selon ce qu'il avait dit par la bouche de ses saints Prophètes, qui ont été de tout temps; |
| 71 | That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; | Que nous serions sauvés de la main de nos ennemis, et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent; |
| 72 | To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; | Pour exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères, et pour avoir mémoire de sa sainte alliance; |
| 73 | The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, | Qui est le serment qu'il a fait à Abraham notre père; |
| 74 | That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, | Savoir, qu'il nous accorderait, qu'étant délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servirions sans crainte. |
| 75 | In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. | En sainteté et en justice devant lui, tous les jours de notre vie. |
| 76 | And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; | Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé le Prophète du Souverain; car tu iras devant la face du Seigneur, pour préparer ses voies; |
| 77 | To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, | Et pour donner la connaissance du salut à son peuple, dans la rémission de leurs péchés; |
| 78 | Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, | Par les entrailles de la miséricorde de notre Dieu, desquelles l'Orient d'en haut nous a visités. |
| 79 | To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. | Afin de reluire à ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et dans l'ombre de la mort, et pour conduire nos pas dans le chemin de la paix. |
| 80 | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. | Et le petit enfant croissait, et se fortifiait en esprit; et il fut dans les déserts jusqu'au jour qu'il devait être manifesté à Israël. |
