| 4 | that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed. | affinché tu riconosca la certezza delle cose che ti sono state insegnate. |
| 5 | There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. | Ai giorni di Erode, re della Giudea, vi era un certo sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia; sua moglie era discendente da Aaronne e si chiamava Elisabetta. |
| 6 | And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. | Erano entrambi giusti agli occhi di Dio, camminando irreprensibili in tutti i comandamenti e le leggi del Signore. |
| 7 | And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in years. | Ma non avevano figli, perché Elisabetta era sterile, ed entrambi erano già avanzati in età. |
| 8 | Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest`s office before God in the order of his course, | Or avvenne che, mentre Zaccaria esercitava il suo ufficio sacerdotale davanti a Dio nell'ordine della sua classe, |
| 9 | according to the custom of the priest`s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. | secondo l'usanza del servizio sacerdotale, gli toccò in sorte di entrare nel tempio del Signore per bruciare l'incenso. |
| 10 | And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. | Intanto l'intera folla del popolo stava fuori in preghiera, nell'ora dell'incenso. |
| 11 | And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense. | Allora un angelo del Signore gli apparve, stando in piedi alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso. |
| 12 | And Zacharias was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. | Al vederlo Zaccaria fu turbato e preso da paura, |
| 13 | But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. | Ma l'angelo gli disse: Non temere Zaccaria, perché la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figlio, al quale porrai nome Giovanni. |
| 14 | And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. | Ed egli sarà per te motivo di gioia e di allegrezza, e molti si rallegreranno per la sua nascita. |
| 15 | For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother`s womb. | Perché egli sarà grande davanti al Signore; non berrà né vino né bevande inebrianti e sarà ripieno di Spirito Santo fin dal grembo di sua madre. |
| 16 | And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God. | E convertirà molti dei figli d'Israele al Signore, loro Dio. |
| 17 | And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient [to walk] in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared [for him]. | Ed andrà davanti a lui nello spirito e potenza di Elia, per ricondurre i cuori dei padri verso i figli e i ribelli alla saggezza dei giusti, per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto. |
| 18 | And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. | E Zaccaria disse all'angelo: Da che cosa conoscerò questo? Poiché io sono vecchio e mia moglie è avanzata negli anni. |
| 19 | And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. | E l'angelo, rispondendo, gli disse: Io sono Gabriele che sto alla presenza di Dio, e sono stato mandato per parlarti e annunziarti queste buone novelle. |
| 20 | And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. | Ed ecco, tu sarai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole che si adempiranno a loro tempo. |
| 21 | And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. | Intanto il popolo aspettava Zaccaria e si meravigliava che egli si trattenesse così a lungo nel tempio. |
| 22 | And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. | Ma, quando uscì, non poteva parlare loro; allora essi compresero che egli aveva avuto una visione nel tempio; egli faceva loro dei cenni, ma rimase muto. |
| 23 | And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house. | E avvenne che, quando furono compiuti i giorni del suo servizio, egli ritornò a casa sua. |
| 24 | And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, | Ora, dopo quei giorni, sua moglie Elisabetta concepì; e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi e diceva: |
| 25 | Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men. | Ecco cosa mi ha fatto il Signore nei giorni, in cui ha volto il suo sguardo su di me per rimuovere la mia vergogna tra gli uomini. |
| 26 | Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, | Nel sesto mese, l'angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nazaret, |
| 27 | to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin`s name was Mary. | ad una vergine fidanzata a un uomo di nome Giuseppe, della casa di Davide; e il nome della vergine era Maria. |
| 28 | And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord [is] with thee. | E l'angelo, entrato da lei, disse: Salve, o grandemente favorita, il Signore è con te; tu sei benedetta fra le donne |
| 29 | But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. | Ma quando lo vide, ella rimase turbata alle sue parole, e si domandava cosa potesse significare un tale saluto. |
| 30 | And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. | E l'angelo le disse: Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. |
| 31 | And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. | Ed ecco, tu concepirai nel grembo e partorirai un figlio, e gli porrai nome Gesù. |
| 32 | He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: | Egli sarà grande e sarà chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo; e il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di Davide, suo padre; |
| 33 | and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. | e regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno, e il suo regno non avrà mai fine. |
| 34 | And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? | E Maria disse all'angelo: Come avverrà questo, poiché io non conosco uomo?. |
| 35 | And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. | E l'angelo, rispondendo, le disse: Lo Spirito Santo verrà su di te e la potenza dell'Altissimo ti adombrerà, pertanto il santo che nascerà da te sarà chiamato figlio di Dio. |
| 36 | And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. | Ed ecco Elisabetta, tua parente, ha anch'ella concepito un figlio nella sua vecchiaia; e questo è il sesto mese per lei, che era chiamata sterile |
| 37 | For no word from God shall be void of power. | poiché nulla è impossibile con Dio. |
| 38 | And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. | Allora Maria disse: Ecco la serva del Signore; mi sia fatto secondo la tua parola. E l'angelo si allontanò da lei. |
| 39 | And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; | Ora in quei giorni Maria si levò e si recò in fretta nella regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda, |
| 40 | and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. | ed entrò in casa di Zaccaria e salutò Elisabetta. |
| 41 | And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; | E avvenne che, appena Elisabetta udì il saluto di Maria, il bambino le sobbalzò nel grembo, ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito Santo, |
| 42 | and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb. | ed esclamò a gran voce, dicendo: Tu sei benedetta fra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo grembo. |
| 43 | And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? | E perché mi accade questo, che la madre del mio Signore venga a me? |
| 44 | For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. | Poiché, ecco, appena la voce del tuo saluto mi è giunta agli orecchi, il bambino è sobbalzato di gioia nel mio grembo. |
| 45 | And blessed [is] she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. | Ora, beata è colei che ha creduto, perché le cose dettele da parte del Signore avranno compimento. |
| 46 | And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, | E Maria disse: L'anima mia magnifica il Signore, |
| 47 | And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. | e lo spirito mio esulta in Dio, mio Salvatore, |
| 48 | For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. | perché egli ha avuto riguardo alla bassezza della sua serva, poiché ecco d'ora in poi tutte le generazioni mi proclameranno beata, |
| 49 | For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name. | perché il Potente mi ha fatto cose grandi, e Santo è il suo nome! |
| 50 | And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him. | E la sua misericordia si estende di generazione in generazione verso coloro che lo temono. |
| 51 | He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart. | Egli ha operato potentemente col suo braccio; ha disperso i superbi nei pensieri del loro cuore; |
| 52 | He hath put down princes from [their] thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree. | ha rovesciato i potenti dai loro troni ed ha innalzato gli umili |
| 53 | The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. | ha ricolmato di beni gli affamati e ha rimandato i ricchi a mani vuote. |
| 54 | He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy | Egli ha soccorso Israele, suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia |
| 55 | (As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever. | come aveva dichiarato ai nostri padri, ad Abrahamo e alla sua progenie, per sempre. |
| 56 | And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house. | E Maria rimase con Elisabetta circa tre mesi, poi se ne tornò a casa sua. |
| 57 | Now Elisabeth`s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. | Ora giunse per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire, e diede alla luce un figlio. |
| 58 | And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her. | I suoi vicini e i parenti, udendo che il Signore le aveva usato grande misericordia, si rallegrarono con lei. |
| 59 | And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father. | Ed avvenne che nell'ottavo giorno vennero per circoncidere il bambino e intendevano chiamarlo Zaccaria, col nome di suo padre; |
| 60 | And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. | ma sua madre intervenne e disse: No, si chiamerà invece Giovanni. |
| 61 | And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. | Ed essi le dissero: Non vi è alcuno nella tua parentela che si chiami con questo nome. |
| 62 | And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. | Così domandarono con cenni a suo padre, come voleva che lo si chiamasse. |
| 63 | And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. | Egli allora chiese una tavoletta e vi scrisse: Il suo nome è Giovanni. E tutti si meravigliarono. |
| 64 | And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue [loosed], and he spake, blessing God. | In quell'istante la sua bocca si aperse e la sua lingua si sciolse, e parlava benedicendo Dio. |
| 65 | And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. | E tutti i loro vicini furono presi da timore, e tutte queste cose erano divulgate per tutta la regione montuosa della Giudea. |
| 66 | And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. | E tutti coloro che le udirono, le riposero nel cuore loro, dicendo: Chi sarà mai questo bambino?. E la mano del Signore era con lui. |
| 67 | And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, | E Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno di Spirito Santo e profetizzò, dicendo: |
| 68 | Blessed [be] the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people, | Benedetto sia il Signore Dio d'Israele, perché ha visitato e compiuto la redenzione per il suo popolo; |
| 69 | And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David | e ci ha suscitato una potente salvezza nella casa di Davide suo servo |
| 70 | (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old), | come egli aveva dichiarato per bocca dei suoi santi profeti fin dai tempi antichi, perché fossimo salvati |
| 71 | Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; | dai nostri nemici e dalle mani di tutti coloro che ci odiano, |
| 72 | To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant; | per usare misericordia verso i nostri padri e ricordarsi del suo santo patto, |
| 73 | The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father, | il giuramento fatto ad Abrahamo nostro padre, |
| 74 | To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear, | per concederci che, liberati dalle mani dei nostri nemici, lo potessimo servire senza paura, |
| 75 | In holiness and righteousness before him all our days. | in santità e giustizia davanti a lui tutti i giorni della nostra vita. |
| 76 | Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways; | E tu, o piccolo bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell'Altissimo, perché tu andrai davanti alla faccia del Signore a preparare le sue vie, |
| 77 | To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins, | per dare al suo popolo la conoscenza della salvezza, nel perdono dei loro peccati; |
| 78 | Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us, | grazie alle viscere di misericordia del nostro Dio, per cui l'aurora dall'alto ci visiterà, |
| 79 | To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace. | per illuminare quelli che giacevano nelle tenebre e nell'ombra della morte, per guidare i nostri passi nella via della pace. |
| 80 | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel. | Intanto il bambino cresceva e si fortificava nello spirito, e rimase nei deserti fino al giorno che egli doveva manifestarsi ad Israele. |
