| 5 | Aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un prêtre nommé Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia; et sa femme, qui était des filles d'Aaron, se nommait Elisabeth. | There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. |
| 6 | Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur d'une manière irréprochable. | And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. |
| 7 | Et ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l'un et l'autre avancés en âge. | And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in years. |
| 8 | Or, comme il était de service devant Dieu au tour de sa classe, | Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest`s office before God in the order of his course, |
| 9 | il lui échut par le sort, selon la coutume du service divin, d'avoir à entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur pour offrir l'encens. | according to the custom of the priest`s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. |
| 10 | Et toute la multitude du peuple était au dehors en prière, à l'heure de l'encens. | And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. |
| 11 | Un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l'autel de l'encens. | And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense. |
| 12 | Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit. | And Zacharias was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. |
| 13 | Mais l'ange lui dit : "Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée : ta femme Elisabeth t'enfantera un fils que tu appelleras Jean. | But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. |
| 14 | Et ce sera pour toi joie et allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance; | And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. |
| 15 | car il sera grand devant le Seigneur, il ne boira ni vin ni rien qui enivre, et il sera rempli de l'Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère; | For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother`s womb. |
| 16 | il ramènera beaucoup des enfants d'Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu; | And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God. |
| 17 | et lui-même marchera devant lui, avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener les coeurs des pères vers les enfants et les indociles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé." | And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient [to walk] in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared [for him]. |
| 18 | Zacharie dit à l'ange : "A quoi le reconnaîtrai-je ? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge." | And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. |
| 19 | L'ange lui répondit : "Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette heureuse nouvelle. | And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. |
| 20 | Et voici : tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps." | And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. |
| 21 | Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie et on s'étonnait qu'il s'attardât dans le sanctuaire. | And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. |
| 22 | Or, étant sorti, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire; et lui leur faisait des signes, et il resta muet. | And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. |
| 23 | Quand les jours de son service furent accomplis, il s'en alla en sa maison. | And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house. |
| 24 | Après ces jours, Elisabeth, sa femme, conçut, et elle se tint cachée pendant cinq mois, disant : | And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, |
| 25 | "Ainsi a fait pour moi le Seigneur, au jour où il lui a plu d'ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes." | Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men. |
| 26 | Au sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth, | Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, |
| 27 | vers une vierge qui était fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph; et le nom de la vierge était Marie. | to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin`s name was Mary. |
| 28 | Etant entré où elle était, il lui dit : "Salut, pleine de grâce ! Le Seigneur est avec vous; [vous êtes bénie entre les femmes]." | And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord [is] with thee. |
| 29 | Mais à cette parole elle fut fort troublée, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait être cette salutation. | But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. |
| 30 | L'ange lui dit : "Ne craignez point, Marie, car vous avez trouvé grâce devant Dieu. | And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. |
| 31 | Voici que vous concevrez, et vous enfanterez un fils, et vous lui donnerez le nom de Jésus. | And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. |
| 32 | Il sera grand et sera appelé fils du Très-Haut; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père; | He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: |
| 33 | il régnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n'aura point de fin." | and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. |
| 34 | Marie dit à l'ange : "Comment cela sera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point l'homme ?" | And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? |
| 35 | L'ange lui répondit : "L'Esprit-Saint viendra sur vous, et la vertu du Très-Haut vous couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi l'être saint qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu. | And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. |
| 36 | Et voici qu'Elisabeth, votre parente, a conçu, elle aussi, un fils dans sa vieillesse, et ce mois-ci est le sixième pour elle que l'on appelait stérile, | And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. |
| 37 | car rien ne sera impossible pour Dieu." | For no word from God shall be void of power. |
| 38 | Marie dit alors : "Voici la servante du Seigneur : qu'il me soit fait selon votre parole ! "Et l'ange la quitta. | And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. |
| 39 | En ces jours-là Marie partit et s'en alla en hâte vers la montagne, en une ville de Juda. | And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; |
| 40 | Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth. | and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. |
| 41 | Or, quand Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit. | And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; |
| 42 | Et elle s'écria à haute voix, disant : "Vous êtes bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de vos entrailles est béni. | and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb. |
| 43 | Et d'où m'est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi ? | And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? |
| 44 | Car votre voix, lorsque vous m'avez saluée, n'a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que l'enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein. | For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. |
| 45 | Heureuse celle qui a cru ! Car elles seront accomplies les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur ! " | And blessed [is] she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. |
| 46 | Et Marie dit : Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur, | And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, |
| 47 | et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur, | And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. |
| 48 | parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Voici, en effet, que désormais toutes les générations me diront bienheureuse, | For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. |
| 49 | parce que le Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Et son nom est saint, | For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name. |
| 50 | et sa miséricorde d'âge en âge, est pour ceux qui le craignent. | And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him. |
| 51 | Il a fait oeuvre de force avec son bras; il a dissipé ceux qui s'enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur coeur; | He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart. |
| 52 | il a renversé de leur trône les potentats, et il a élevé les humbles; | He hath put down princes from [their] thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree. |
| 53 | il a rassasié de biens les affamés, et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides. | The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. |
| 54 | Il a pris soin d'Israël son serviteur, se ressouvenant de sa miséricorde, | He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy |
| 55 | - ainsi qu'il l'avait promis à nos pères, - en faveur d'Abraham et de sa race, pour toujours. | (As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever. |
| 56 | Et Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, et elle s'en retourna chez elle. | And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house. |
| 57 | Cependant le temps s'accomplit où Elisabeth devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils. | Now Elisabeth`s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. |
| 58 | Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait manifesté sa miséricorde envers elle, se réjouissaient avec elle. | And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her. |
| 59 | Or, le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant, et ils le nommaient Zacharie d'après le nom de son père. | And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father. |
| 60 | Alors sa mère, prenant la parole : "Non, dit-elle, mais il s'appellera Jean." | And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. |
| 61 | Ils lui dirent : "Il n'y a personne de votre parenté qui soit appelé de ce nom." | And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. |
| 62 | Et ils demandaient par signes à son père comment il voulait qu'on le nommât. | And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. |
| 63 | S'étant fait donner une tablette, il écrivit : "Jean est son nom; "et tous furent dans l'étonnement. | And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. |
| 64 | A l'instant sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue (se délia); et il parlait, bénissant Dieu. | And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue [loosed], and he spake, blessing God. |
| 65 | La crainte s'empara de tous les habitants d'alentour, et partout dans la montagne de Judée on racontait toutes ces choses. | And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. |
| 66 | Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les recueillirent dans leur coeur, et ils disaient : "Que sera donc cet enfant ?"Et en effet la main du Seigneur était avec lui. | And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. |
| 67 | Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l'Esprit-Saint, et il prophétisa, en disant : | And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, |
| 68 | "Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, parce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple. | Blessed [be] the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people, |
| 69 | et qu'il a suscité pour nous une corne de salut, dans la maison de David, son serviteur, | And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David |
| 70 | - ainsi qu'il l'a promis par la bouche de ses saints prophètes, dès les temps anciens, - | (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old), |
| 71 | pour nous sauver de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent, | Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; |
| 72 | afin d'exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères et de se souvenir de son pacte saint, | To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant; |
| 73 | du serment qu'il fit à Abraham, notre père, de nous accorder que, | The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father, |
| 74 | sans crainte, affranchis de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servions, | To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear, |
| 75 | avec sainteté et justice devant lui, tous les jours de notre (vie). | In holiness and righteousness before him all our days. |
| 76 | Quant à toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur pour lui préparer les voies, | Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways; |
| 77 | afin d'apprendre à son peuple à reconnaître le salut dans la rémission de leurs péchés, | To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins, |
| 78 | par l'effet de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, par laquelle nous visitera une lumière d'en haut | Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us, |
| 79 | pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, pour diriger nos pas dans la voie de la paix." | To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace. |
| 80 | Or l'enfant croissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il demeura dans le désert jusqu'au jour de sa manifestation devant Israël. | And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel. |
