J'abandonnerai mon peuple, Je me retirerai d'avec eux; Car ils sont tous des adultères; C'est une assemblée d'infidèles. | Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging-place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. |
| 3 | Ils bandent leur langue comme leur arc, pour décocher le mensonge; Ce n'est pas par la vérité qu'ils sont puissants dans le pays, Car ils vont de péché en péché, Et ne me connaissent pas, dit Jéhovah. | And they bend their tongue, [as it were] their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith Jehovah. |
| 4 | Que chacun de vous se garde de son ami, Et ne vous fiez à aucun frère; Car tout frère ne fait que supplanter, Et tout ami répand la calomnie. | Take ye heed every one of his neighbor, and trust ye not in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go about with slanders. |
| 5 | Chacun dupe l'autre; Ils ne disent pas la vérité; Ils exercent leur langue à mentir; Ils s'étudient à mal faire. | And they will deceive every one his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity. |
| 6 | Tu habites au milieu de la mauvaise foi; C'est par mauvaise foi qu'ils refusent de me connaître, Dit Jéhovah. | Thy habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith Jehovah. |
| 7 | C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées : Je vais les fondre au creuset et les éprouver; Car que faire autre chose avec la fille de mon peuple ? | Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how [else] should I do, because of the daughter of my people? |
| 8 | C'est un dard meurtrier que leur langue; Elle ne profère que mensonge; De la bouche on dit : Paix à son prochain, Et dans le coeur on lui dresse des embûches. | Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him. |
| 9 | Et pour tous ces crimes je ne les punirais pas, Dit Jéhovah; Et je ne me vengerais pas d'une nation pareille! | Shall I not visit them for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? |
| 10 | Sur les montagnes je ferai entendre Une plainte et une lamentation, Sur les pâturages du désert un chant de deuil; Car ils sont brûlés au point que personne n'y passe; On n'y entend plus la voix des troupeaux; Depuis l'oiseau du ciel jusqu'au bétail, Tous ont fui, ont disparu. | For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passeth through; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the birds of the heavens and the beasts are fled, they are gone. |
| 11 | Et je ferai de Jérusalem des tas de pierres, Un repaire de chacals, Et je ferai des villes de Juda une solitude Où personne n'habite. | And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant. |
| 12 | Quel est l'homme sage qui comprenne ces choses ? Quel est celui à qui la bouche de Jéhovah a parlé, Pour qu'il les fasse connaître ? Pourquoi le pays est-il détruit, Brûlé comme le désert où personne ne passe ? | Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and [who is] he to whom the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken, that he may declare it? wherefore is the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passeth through? |
| 13 | Et Jéhovah dit : C'est parce qu'ils ont abandonné ma loi, Que j'avais mise devant eux, Qu'ils n'ont pas écouté ma voix Et ne l'ont pas suivie. | And Jehovah saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein, |
| 14 | Mais ils ont suivi l'obstination de leur coeur; Ils ont marché après les Baals Que leurs pères leur ont enseignés. | but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them; |
| 15 | C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Jéhovah, le Dieu d'Israël : "Je vais nourrir d'absinthe ce peuple d'Israël Et je lui donnerai à boire des eaux empoisonnées. | therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. |
| 16 | Je les disperserai parmi des nations Que n'ont connues ni eux, ni leurs pères, jusqu'à ce que je les aie exterminés. | I will scatter them also among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them. |
| 17 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées : Pensez à Commander les pleureuses, Et qu'elles viennent! Envoyez chez celles qui sont les plus habiles, Et qu'elles viennent! | Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skilful women, that they may come: |
| 18 | Qu'elles se hâtent, qu'elles entonnent sur nous des lamentations; Que les larmes coulent de nos yeux, Et que de nos paupières les pleurs ruissellent! | and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. |
| 19 | Car un bruit de lamentations a été entendu dans Sion : "Comment sommes-nous dévastés, Couverts de honte, A ce point que nous abandonnions le pays, Parce qu'on a jeté bas nos demeures ?" | For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we ruined! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings. |
| 20 | Femmes, écoutez donc la parole de Jéhovah Et que votre oreille reçoive la parole de sa bouche : Enseignez à vos filles une lamentation, Et que chacune apprenne à sa compagne un chant de deuil; | Yet hear the word of Jehovah, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbor lamentation. |
| 21 | Car la mort est montée par nos fenêtres, Et elle est entrée dans nos palais, Pour faire disparaître l'enfant de la rue Et les jeunes gens des places publiques. | For death is come up into our windows, it is entered into our palaces; to cut off the children from without, [and] the young men from the streets. |
| 22 | Dis : Ainsi parle Jéhovah : Le cadavre de l'homme tombera comme du fumier sur les champs, Et comme la javelle derrière le moissonneur, Sans que personne la ramasse. | Speak, Thus saith Jehovah, The dead bodies of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman; and none shall gather [them]. |
| 23 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah : Que le sage ne se glorifie pas de sa sagesse; Que le fort ne se glorifie pas de sa force; Que le riche ne se glorifie pas de sa richesse. | Thus saith Jehovah, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; |
| 24 | Mais que celui qui se glorifie se glorifie en ceci : D'avoir de l'intelligence et de me connaître, De savoir que je suis Jéhovah, Qui exerce la miséricorde, le droit et la justice sur la terre; Car c'est à cela que je prends plaisir, dit Jéhovah. | but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah who exerciseth lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Jehovah. |
| 25 | Des jours viennent, dit Jéhovah, Où je châtierai tout circoncis avec l'incirconcis : | Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will punish all them that are circumcised in [their] uncircumcision: |
| 26 | L'Egypte, Juda, Edom, les fils d'Ammon, Moab Et tous ceux qui se rasent les tempes, Les habitants du désert; Car toutes les nations sont incirconcises, Et toute la maison d'Israël est incirconcise de coeur. | Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners [of their hair] cut off, that dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart. |
