| 3 | Vers elle viennent des bergers avec leurs troupeaux! Ils plantent leurs tentes autour d'elle; Chacun pâturera son quartier. | Shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place. |
| 4 | Inaugurez le combat contre elle : Levez-vous, montons à l'assaut en plein midi! Malheur à nous, car le jour baisse, es ombres du soir s'allongent. | Prepare ye war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day declineth, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. |
| 5 | Levez-vous, escaladons de nuit Et détruisons son palais! | Arise, and let us go up by night, and let us destroy her palaces. |
| 6 | Car ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées; Abattez ses arbres, Elevez des terrasses contre Jérusalem; C'est la ville à punir; il n'y a dans son sein qu’injustice. | For thus hath Jehovah of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast up a mound against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her. |
| 7 | Comme un puits fait sourdre continuellement ses eaux, Ainsi elle fait jaillir sa méchanceté. On n'y entend que violence et que ruine ; Plaies et blessures y sont constamment devant ma face. | As a well casteth forth its waters, so she casteth forth her wickedness: violence and destruction is heard in her; before me continually is sickness and wounds. |
| 8 | Amende-toi, Jérusalem, De peur que mon âme ne se détache de toi, Que je ne fasse de toi un désert, Un pays inhabité. | Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul be alienated from thee; lest I make thee a desolation, a land not inhabited. |
| 9 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées : On grappillera comme une vigne les restes d'Israël; Mets et remets la main, Comme fait le vendangeur aux sarments. | Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn again thy hand as a grape-gatherer into the baskets. |
| 10 | A qui parlerai-je, et qui adjurerai-je de m'entendre ? Leurs oreilles sont incirconcises, Et ils sont incapables de faire attention; La parole de Jéhovah est devenue pour eux un opprobre; Et ils n'y prennent aucun plaisir. | To whom shall I speak and testify, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of Jehovah is become unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. |
| 11 | Mais je suis rempli de la colère de Jéhovah, Je suis las de la contenir. Verse-la sur l'enfant dans la rue Et sur la réunion des jeunes gens; Car le mari et la femme, Le vieillard et l'homme chargé de jours, tous seront pris. | Therefore I am full of the wrath of Jehovah; I am weary with holding in: pour it out upon the children in the street, and upon the assembly of young men together; for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days. |
| 12 | Leurs maisons passeront à d'autres, Leurs champs et leurs femmes également; Car j'étendrai ma main sur les habitants du pays, Dit Jéhovah. | And their houses shall be turned unto others, their fields and their wives together; for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith Jehovah. |
| 13 | Car du plus petit au plus grand, tous ils se livrent à la rapine Et du prophète au prêtre tous pratiquent le mensonge. | For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. |
| 14 | Ils traitent à la légère la plaie de la fille de mon peuple, En disant : Paix, paix! Et il n'y a point de paix. | They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. |
| 15 | Ils ont été confondus. Car ils ont commis des abominations; Ils ne rougissent même plus et ne connaissent plus la honte; C’est pourquoi ils tomberont avec ceux qui tombent; Ils s'affaisseront au jour où je les visiterai. | Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall; at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith Jehovah. |
| 16 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah; Tenez-vous sur les routes; Regardez et informez-vous des sentiers d'autrefois, Quelle est la voie du salut, et suivez-la, Et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes. Mais ils ont répondu : "Nous n'y marcherons pas!" | Thus saith Jehovah, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk [therein]. |
| 17 | J’ai placé sur vous des sentinelles; Soyez attentifs au son de la trompette! Mais ils ont répondu : "Nous n'y ferons pas attention!" | And I set watchmen over you, [saying], Hearken to the sound of the trumpet; but they said, We will not hearken. |
| 18 | Aussi, écoutez, nations; Sache, assemblée des peuples, ce qui leur arrivera. | Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. |
| 19 | Terre, écoute : Je fais venir sur ce peuple un malheur, Fruit de leurs pensées, Parce qu'ils n'ont pas été attentifs à mes paroles Et qu'ils ont rejeté ma loi. | Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it. |
| 20 | Que me fait l'encens venu de Saba Et le roseau précieux d'un pays lointain ? Vos holocaustes ne me plaisent point, Vos sacrifices ne me sont pas agréables. | To what purpose cometh there to me frankincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt-offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing unto me. |
| 21 | C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Jéhovah : Voici que je mets devant ce peuple des pierres d'achoppement; Les pères et les fils s'y heurteront, L'habitant et son voisin y périront ensemble. | Therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will lay stumbling-blocks before this people; and the fathers and the sons together shall stumble against them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish. |
| 22 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah : Voici qu'un peuple arrive de la contrée du septentrion, Qu'une grande nation se lève des extrémités de la terre. | Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, a people cometh from the north country; and a great nation shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. |
| 23 | Ils manient l'arc et le javelot; Gens cruels et sans pitié, Leur voix gronde comme la mer; Ils sont montés sur des chevaux, Prêts à combattre comme un seul homme Contre toi, fille de Sion. | They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea, and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Zion. |
| 24 | A la nouvelle de leur approche, Car nos mains ont défailli, - L'angoisse nous a saisis, Les douleurs d'une femme qui enfante. | We have heard the report thereof; our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, [and] pangs as of a woman in travail. |
| 25 | Ne sors point aux champs, Ne va pas sur les chemins, Car l'ennemi tient l'épée Et l'épouvante règne à l'entour. | Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy, [and] terror, are on every side. |
| 26 | Fille de mon peuple, ceins le cilice, Roule-toi dans la cendre, Prends le deuil comme pour un fils unique, Fais des lamentations amères, Car le dévastateur est venu soudain sur nous. | O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us. |
| 27 | Je t'ai établi au milieu de mon peuple comme un essayeur, Comme une muraille forte, Pour que tu connaisses et éprouves leurs voies. | I have made thee a trier [and] a fortress among my people; that thou mayest know and try their way. |
| 28 | Ils sont tous des rebelles entre les rebelles; Ils sèment la calomnie; C'est du cuivre et du fer; Tous sont corrompus. | They are all grievous revolters, going about with slanders; they are brass and iron: they all of them deal corruptly. |
| 29 | Le soufflet est devenu la proie du feu, Le plomb est épuisé; On épure, on épure; Les méchants ne se détachent pas. | The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed of the fire: in vain do they go on refining; for the wicked are not plucked away. |
| 30 | "Argent de rebut!"dira-t-on; Car Jéhovah les a rejetés. | Refuse silver shall men them, because Jehovah hath rejected them. |
