Bel est confondu, Mérodach est abattu; Ses idoles sont confondues, ses faux dieux sont abattus. | Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed. |
| 3 | Car du septentrion un peuple est monté contre elle; Il fera de son pays une solitude, Personne n'y habitera plus; Hommes et bêtes ont pris la fuite, tout s'en est allé. | For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and beast. |
| 4 | En ces jours-là et en ce temps-là, dit Jéhovah, Les enfants d'Israël reviendront, Et avec eux les enfants de Juda; Ils marcheront en pleurant Et chercheront Jéhovah, leur Dieu. | In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek Jehovah their God. |
| 5 | Ils s'informeront du chemin de Sion; Leur face est tournée vers elle."Venez et attachez-vous à Jéhovah Par une alliance éternelle, qui ne soit jamais oubliée." | They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces thitherward, [saying], Come ye, and join yourselves to Jehovah in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten. |
| 6 | Mon peuple était devenu un troupeau de brebis qui se perdaient; Leurs bergers les égaraient sur des montagnes perfides; Elles allaient de montagne en colline, oubliant leur bercail. | My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place. |
| 7 | Tous ceux qui les trouvaient les dévoraient, Et leurs ennemis disaient : Nous ne sommes pas coupables, Puisqu'ils ont péché contre Jéhovah, la demeure de justice, Contre Jéhovah, l'espérance de leurs pères. | All that found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of righteousness, even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers. |
| 8 | Fuyez hors de Babylone; Mettez-vous, comme des boucs, à la tête du troupeau. | Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he-goats before the flocks. |
| 9 | Car je vais susciter et faire marcher contre Babel Une réunion de grands peuples venant du pays du septentrion; Ils se rangeront en bataille contre elle, et de ce côté-là elle sera prise; Leurs flèches sont celles d'un guerrier habile, Qui ne revient pas à vide. | For, lo, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; none shall return in vain. |
| 10 | Et la Chaldée sera mise au pillage, Tous ceux qui la pilleront se rassasieront, dit Jéhovah. | And Chaldea shall be a prey: all that prey upon her shall be satisfied, saith Jehovah. |
| 11 | Oui, réjouissez-vous; oui, livrez-vous à l'allégresse, Pillards de mon héritage; Oui, bondissez comme une génisse dans la prairie, Hennissez comme des étalons! | Because ye are glad, because ye rejoice, O ye that plunder my heritage, because ye are wanton as a heifer that treadeth out [the grain], and neigh as strong horses; |
| 12 | Votre mère est couverte de confusion; Celle qui vous a enfantés rougit de honte; Elle est la dernière des nations, Un désert, un steppe, une terre aride. | your mother shall be utterly put to shame; she that bare you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the hindermost of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. |
| 13 | A cause de la colère de Jéhovah, elle ne sera plus habitée, Ce ne sera plus qu'une solitude; Quiconque passera près de Babel S'étonnera et sifflera à la vue de ses plaies. | Because of the wrath of Jehovah she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. |
| 14 | Rangez-vous en bataille autour de Babel, vous tous, archers! Tirez contre elle, n'épargnez pas les flèches, Car elle a péché contre Jéhovah. | Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, all ye that bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against Jehovah. |
| 15 | Poussez de tous côtés contre elle un cri de guerre; Elle tend les mains; Ses tours s'écroulent, ses murs sont renversés, Car c'est la vengeance de Jéhovah! Vengez-vous sur elle; Faites-lui comme elle a fait! | Shout against her round about: she hath submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of Jehovah: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. |
| 16 | Exterminez de Babel celui qui sème Et celui qui manie la faucille au jour de la moisson. Devant le glaive destructeur, Que chacun se tourne vers son peuple, Que chacun fuie vers son pays. | Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land. |
| 17 | Israël est une brebis égarée A qui les lions ont fait la chasse; Le premier l'a dévorée : le roi d'Assyrie; Puis l'autre lui a brisé les os : Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babel. | Israel is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, the king of Assyria devoured him; and now at last Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. |
| 18 | C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées, Dieu d'Israël : Je vais visiter le roi de Babel et son pays, Comme j'ai visité le roi d'Assyrie; | Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. |
| 19 | Et je ramènerai Israël dans sa demeure; Il paîtra au Carmel et en Basan; Il se rassasiera sur la montagne d'Ephraïm et de Galaad. | And I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. |
| 20 | En ces jours-là et en ce temps-là, dit Jéhovah, On cherchera l'iniquité d'Israël, et elle ne sera plus. Le péché de Juda, et on ne le trouvera. Plus, Car je pardonnerai au reste que j'aurai laissé. | In those days, and in that time, saith Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant. |
| 21 | Marche contre le pays de Rébellion- Et contre les habitants de Punition; Détruis, extermine-les les uns après les autres, dit Jéhovah, Et fais-leur tout ce que je t'ai ordonné. | Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: slay and utterly destroy after them, saith Jehovah, and do according to all that I have commanded thee. |
| 22 | Bruit de bataille dans le pays et grand massacre! | A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. |
| 23 | Comment a été rompu et brisé Le marteau de toute la terre ? Comment Babylone est-elle devenue Une solitude au milieu des nations ? | How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! |
| 24 | Je t'ai tendu des lacets, et tu as été prise, Babel, Sans t'en douter; Tu as été trouvée et saisie, Parce que tu t'es mise en guerre contre Jéhovah. | I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against Jehovah. |
| 25 | Jéhovah a ouvert. son arsenal, Et il en a tiré les armes de sa colère; Car le Seigneur, Dieu des armées, a affaire Au pays des Chaldéens, | Jehovah hath opened his armory, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, hath a work [to do] in the land of the Chaldeans. |
| 26 | Arrivez à Babel de toutes parts, Ouvrez ses greniers, Faites des monceaux comme des tas de gerbes, et exterminez; Qu'il n'en reste rien! | Come against her from the utmost border; open her store-houses; cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly; let nothing of her be left. |
| 27 | Tuez tous les taureaux qui descendent à la boucherie! Malheur à eux, car leur jour est arrivé, Le temps où ils seront visités. | Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. |
| 28 | Ecoutez! les cris des fuyards Et de ceux qui se sauvent du pays de Babel Annoncent en Sion la vengeance de Jéhovah, notre Dieu, La vengeance de son temple. | The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his temple. |
| 29 | Appelez contre Babel des archers, Tous ceux qui bandent l'arc; Campez autour d'elle; que personne n'échappe Rendez-lui selon ses oeuvres. Faites-lui tout ce qu'elle a fait; Car elle s'est élevée avec insolence Contre Jéhovah, contre le Saint d’Israël. | Call together the archers against Babylon, all them that bend the bow; encamp against her round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her; for she hath been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel. |
| 30 | C'est pourquoi ses jeunes gens tomberont sur ses places, Et tous ses hommes de guerre périront en ce jour, dit Jéhovah. | Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah. |
| 31 | Me voici; à toi, insolente! Dit le Seigneur, Jéhovah des armées; Car ton jour est venu, Le temps où je visite. | Behold, I am against thee, O thou proud one, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts; for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. |
| 32 | Elle chancelle, l'insolente; Elle tombe, et personne ne la relève; Je mets le feu à ses villes, Et il dévore tous ses alentours. | And the proud one shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all that are round about him. |
| 33 | Ainsi parle Jéhovah des armées : Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda sont opprimés ensemble, Tous ceux qui les ont emmenés captifs les retiennent Et refusent de les lâcher. | Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all that took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go. |
| 34 | Mais leur champion est fort; Jéhovah des armées est son nom; Il défendra puissamment leur cause, Pour donner le repos à la terre Et faire trembler les habitants de Babel. | Their Redeemer is strong; Jehovah of hosts is his name: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. |
| 35 | L'épée des Chaldéens, dit Jéhovah : Contre les habitants de Babel, Contre ses chefs et contre ses sages! | A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith Jehovah, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. |
| 36 | L'épée contre les imposteurs, et qu'ils perdent le sens! L'épée contre les braves, et que l'épouvante les saisissent! | A sword is upon the boasters, and they shall become fools; a sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed. |
| 37 | L'épée contre ses chevaux et ses chars, Et contre toute la tourbe des gens qui sont au milieu d'elle, Et qu'ils deviennent des femmes! L'épée contre ses trésors, et qu'ils soient pillés! | A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed. |
| 38 | Sécheresse sur ses eaux, et qu'elles tarissent! Car c'est un pays d'idoles, Et ces épouvantails les font délirer. | A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of graven images, and they are mad over idols. |
| 39 | C'est pourquoi les animaux du désert s'y établiront avec les chacals; Les autruches y feront leur demeure; Jamais plus personne n'y habitera; Elle sera sans habitants d'âge en âge. | Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. |
| 40 | Comme lorsque Dieu détruisit Sodome, Gomorrhe Et les villes voisines, Personne n'y demeurera, Aucun fils d'homme n'y séjournera. | As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein. |
| 41 | Voici qu'un peuple arrive du Septentrion; Une grande nation et des rois nombreux Se lèvent des extrémités de la terre. | Behold, a people cometh from the north; and a great nation and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. |
| 42 | Ils tiennent à la main l'arc et le javelot; Gens cruels et sans pitié, Leur voix gronde comme la mer; Ils sont montés sur des chevaux, Rangés comme un seul homme Pour te livrer bataille, fille de Babel. | They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, every one set in array, as a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. |
| 43 | Le roi de Babel en a appris la nouvelle, Et ses mains ont défailli; L'angoisse l'a saisi, Comme les douleurs d'une femme qui enfante. | The king of Babylon hath heard the tidings of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of him, [and] pangs as of a woman in travail. |
| 44 | Pareil à un lion, voici qu’il monte Des halliers du Jourdain à la demeure forte, Et soudain je le ferai fuir de leur terre, Et j'établirai sur elle celui que j'ai choisi. Car qui est semblable à moi ? Qui me provoquerait ? Et quel est le berger qui me tiendrait tête ? | Behold, [the enemy] shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that can stand before me? |
| 45 | Ecoutez donc la résolution Que Jéhovah a prise contre Babel, Et les desseins qu'il a médités contre le pays des Chaldéens : Oui, on les entraînera comme de simples brebis; Oui, on dévastera après eux leur demeure! | Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, [even] the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them. |
| 46 | Au bruit de la prise de Babel, la terre tremble, Un cri s'est fait entendre chez les nations! | At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembleth, and the cry is heard among the nations. |
