| 1 | The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, | La parola che fu rivolta a Geremia dall'Eterno, dicendo: |
| 2 | Arise, and go down to the potter`s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. | Alzati e scendi alla casa del vasaio, e là ti farò udire le mie parole. |
| 3 | Then I went down to the potter`s house, and, behold, he was making a work on the wheels. | Allora io scesi alla casa del vasaio, ed ecco, egli stava facendo un lavoro alla ruota. |
| 4 | And when the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. | Ma il vaso che stava facendo con l'argilla si guastò nelle mani del vasaio. Così, cominciando da capo, egli fece con essa un altro vaso, come parve bene agli occhi del vasaio. |
| 5 | Then the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, | Allora la parola dell'Eterno mi fu rivolta, dicendo: |
| 6 | O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter`s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel. | O casa d'Israele, non posso io fare con voi come ha fatto questo vasaio?, dice l'Eterno. Ecco, come l'argilla è nelle mani del vasaio, così siete voi nelle mie mani, o casa d'Israele! |
| 7 | At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; | Talvolta riguardo a una nazione e riguardo a un regno, io parlo di sradicare, di abbattere e di distruggere; |
| 8 | if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. | ma se quella nazione contro la quale ho parlato si converte dalla sua malvagità, io mi pento del male che avevo pensato di farle. |
| 9 | And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; | Altra volta riguardo a una nazione e riguardo a un regno, io parlo di edificare e di piantare; |
| 10 | if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them. | ma se quella nazione o regno fa ciò che è male ai miei occhi, non ascoltando la mia voce, io mi pento del bene che avevo promesso di farle. |
| 11 | Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings. | Perciò ora parla agli uomini di Giuda e agli abitanti di Gerusalemme e di' Così dice l'Eterno: Ecco, io concepisco contro di voi del male e formo contro di voi un disegno, Si converta ora ciascun di voi dalla sua via malvagia, ed emendate le vostre vie e le vostre azioni!. |
| 12 | But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart. | Ma essi dicono: E' inutile, noi vogliamo camminare seguendo i nostri propri pensieri e vogliamo agire ciascuno secondo la caparbietà del proprio cuore malvagio. |
| 13 | Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ask ye now among the nations, who hath heard such things; the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. | Perciò così dice l'Eterno: Chiedete dunque fra le nazioni chi ha udito cose simili. La vergine d'Israele ha fatto una cosa orrenda. |
| 14 | Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? [or] shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up? | Potrà forse scomparire la neve del Libano dalle rocce che si ergono al di sopra del paese?, o si seccheranno mai le fredde acque correnti di una terra straniera? |
| 15 | For my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to false [gods]; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in bypaths, in a way not cast up; | Eppure il mio popolo mi ha dimenticato; bruciano incenso a idoli vani, che li hanno fatti inciampare nelle loro vie, i sentieri antichi, per camminare su vie traverse e non sulla via maestra, |
| 16 | to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head. | facendo del loro paese una desolazione, un oggetto di perpetuo scherno; così tutti quelli che vi passeranno rimarranno stupiti e scuoteranno la testa, |
| 17 | I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity. | Io li disperderò davanti al nemico come fa il vento orientale. Nel giorno della loro calamità io mostrerò loro le spalle e non la faccia. |
| 18 | Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. | Poi essi dissero: Venite e ordiamo congiure contro Geremia, perché la legge non verrà meno al sacerdote né il consiglio al savio né la parola al profeta. Venite, colpiamolo con la lingua e non prestiamo attenzione ad alcuna delle sue parole. |
| 19 | Give heed to me, O Jehovah, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. | Prestami attenzione, o Eterno, e ascolta la voce di quelli che contendono con me. |
| 20 | Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them. | Si rende forse male per bene? Poiché essi hanno scavato una fossa alla mia vita. Ricorda che mi sono presentato davanti a te per parlare in loro favore e per allontanare da loro la tua ira. |
| 21 | Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, [and] their young men smitten of the sword in battle. | Perciò abbandona i loro figli alla fame e dalli in potere della spada; siano le loro mogli private di figli e vedove, i loro mariti siano feriti a morte; i loro giovani siano uccisi di spada in battaglia. |
| 22 | Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. | Si oda un grido dalle loro case, quando farai piombare improvvisamente su di loro una schiera di soldati, perché hanno scavato una fossa per catturarmi e hanno teso lacci ai miei piedi. |
| 23 | Yet, Jehovah, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me; forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight; but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thou with them in the time of thine anger. | Ma tu, o Eterno, conosci tutti i loro disegni contro di me per farmi morire; non perdonare la loro iniquità, non cancellare il loro peccato dalla tua presenza. Siano essi rovesciati davanti a te. Trattali duramente nel giorno della tua ira. |
