| 4 | Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. | Poi Pilato uscì di nuovo e disse loro: Ecco, io ve lo conduco fuori, affinché sappiate che non trovo in lui alcuna colpa. |
| 5 | Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! | Gesù dunque uscì, portando la corona di spine e il manto di porpora. E Pilato disse loro: Ecco l'uomo!. |
| 6 | When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. | Ora, quando lo videro i capi sacerdoti e le guardie, si misero a gridare, dicendo: Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo. Pilato disse loro: Prendetelo voi e crocifiggetelo, perché io non trovo in lui colpa alcuna. |
| 7 | The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. | I Giudei gli risposero: Noi abbiamo una legge e secondo la nostra legge egli deve morire, perché si è fatto Figlio di Dio. |
| 8 | When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; | Quando Pilato udì queste parole, ebbe ancor più paura; |
| 9 | And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. | e, rientrato nel pretorio, disse a Gesù: Di dove sei tu?. Ma Gesù non gli diede alcuna risposta. |
| 10 | Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? | Pilato perciò gli disse: Non mi parli? Non sai che io ho il potere di crocifiggerti e il potere di liberarti?. |
| 11 | Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. | Gesù rispose: Tu non avresti alcun potere su di me se non ti fosse dato dall'alto; perciò chi mi ha consegnato nelle tue mani ha maggior colpa. |
| 12 | And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. | Da quel momento Pilato cercava di liberarlo; ma i Giudei gridavano, dicendo: Se liberi costui, tu non sei amico di Cesare; chiunque si fa re, si oppone a Cesare. |
| 13 | When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. | Pilato dunque, udite queste parole, condusse fuori Gesù e si pose a sedere in tribunale nel luogo detto "Lastrico", e in ebraico "Gabbata"; |
| 14 | And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! | or era la preparazione della Pasqua, ed era circa l'ora sesta; e disse ai Giudei: Ecco il vostro re. |
| 15 | But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. | Ma essi gridarono: Via, via, crocifiggilo. Pilato disse loro: Crocifiggerò il vostro re?. I capi dei sacerdoti risposero: Noi non abbiamo altro re che Cesare. |
| 16 | Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. | Allora egli lo diede nelle loro mani affinché fosse crocifisso. Ed essi presero Gesù e lo condussero via. |
| 17 | And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: | Ed egli, portando la sua croce, si avviò verso il luogo detto "del Teschio" che in ebraico si chiama "Golgota", |
| 18 | Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. | dove lo crocifissero, e con lui due altri, uno di qua e l'altro di là, e Gesù nel mezzo. |
| 19 | And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. | Or Pilato fece anche un'iscrizione e la pose sulla croce, e vi era scritto: "GESÙ IL NAZARENO, IL RE DEI GIUDEI". |
| 20 | This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. | Così molti dei Giudei lessero questa iscrizione, perché il luogo dove Gesù fu crocifisso era vicino alla città, e quella era scritta in ebraico, in greco e in latino. |
| 21 | Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. | Perciò i capi dei sacerdoti dei Giudei dissero a Pilato: Non scrivere: "Il re dei Giudei", ma che egli ha detto: "Io sono il re dei Giudei". |
| 22 | Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. | Pilato rispose: Ciò che ho scritto, ho scritto. |
| 23 | Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. | Or i soldati, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una parte per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Ma la tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta d'un sol pezzo da cima a fondo. |
| 24 | They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. | Dissero dunque fra di loro: Non stracciamola, ma tiriamola a sorte per decidere di chi sarà; e ciò affinché si adempisse la Scrittura, che dice: Hanno spartito fra di loro le mie vesti, e hanno tirato a sorte la mia tunica. I soldati dunque fecero queste cose. |
| 25 | Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. | Or presso la croce di Gesù stavano sua madre e la sorella di sua madre, Maria di Cleopa e Maria Maddalena. |
| 26 | When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! | Gesù allora, vedendo sua madre e presso di lei il discepolo che egli amava, disse a sua madre: Donna, ecco tuo figlio!. |
| 27 | Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. | Poi disse al discepolo: Ecco tua madre!. E da quel momento il discepolo l'accolse in casa sua. |
| 28 | After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. | Dopo questo, sapendo Gesù che ogni cosa era ormai compiuta, affinché si adempisse la Scrittura, disse: Ho sete. |
| 29 | Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. | Or c'era là un vaso pieno d'aceto. Inzuppata dunque una spugna nell'aceto e postala in cima ad un ramo d'issopo gliela accostarono alla bocca. |
| 30 | When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. | Quando Gesù ebbe preso l'aceto disse: e' compiuto. E, chinato il capo, rese lo spirito. |
| 31 | The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. | Or i Giudei, essendo il giorno di Preparazione, affinché i corpi non rimanessero sulla croce il sabato, perché quel sabato era un giorno di particolare importanza, chiesero a Pilato che fossero loro spezzate le gambe e fossero portati via. |
| 32 | Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. | I soldati dunque vennero e spezzarono le gambe al primo e poi anche all'altro, che era crocifisso con lui; |
| 33 | But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: | ma, arrivati a Gesù, come videro che era già morto, non gli spezzarono le gambe, |
| 34 | But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. | ma uno dei soldati gli trafisse il costato con una lancia, e subito ne uscì sangue ed acqua. |
| 35 | And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. | E colui che ha visto ne ha reso testimonianza e la sua testimonianza è verace, ed egli sa che dice il vero, affinché voi crediate. |
| 36 | For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. | Queste cose infatti sono accadute affinché si adempisse la Scrittura: Non gli sarà spezzato alcun osso. |
| 37 | And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. | E ancora un'altra Scrittura dice: Volgeranno lo sguardo a colui che hanno trafitto. |
| 38 | And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. | Dopo queste cose, Giuseppe d'Arimatea che era discepolo di Gesù, ma di nascosto per timore dei Giudei, chiese a Pilato di poter prendere il corpo di Gesù; e Pilato glielo permise. Egli dunque venne e prese il corpo di Gesù. |
| 39 | And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. | Or venne anche Nicodemo, che in precedenza era andato di notte da Gesù, portando una mistura di mirra e di aloe di circa cento libbre. |
| 40 | Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. | Essi dunque presero il corpo di Gesù e lo avvolsero in panni di lino con gli aromi, secondo il costume di sepoltura in uso presso i Giudei. |
| 41 | Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. | Or nel luogo dove egli fu crocifisso c'era un orto, e nell'orto un sepolcro nuovo nel quale non era ancora stato posto nessuno. |
| 42 | There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. | Lì dunque, a motivo del giorno di Preparazione dei Giudei, misero Gesù perché il sepolcro era vicino. |
