| 1 | When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. | Dette queste cose, Gesù uscì con i suoi discepoli e andò di là dal torrente Kedron, dove c'era un orto nel quale entrò lui con i suoi discepoli. |
| 2 | And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. | Or Giuda, che lo tradiva, conosceva anche lui quel luogo, perché molte volte Gesù vi si era ritirato con i suoi discepoli. |
| 3 | Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. | Giuda dunque, preso un gruppo di soldati e le guardie mandate dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei. venne là con lanterne torce e armi. |
| 4 | Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? | Gesù allora, conoscendo tutto quello che gli stava per accadere, uscì e chiese loro: Chi cercate?. |
| 5 | They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. | Gli risposero Gesù il Nazareno. Gesù disse loro: Io sono!. Or Giuda che lo tradiva era anch'egli con loro. |
| 6 | As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. | Appena egli disse loro: Io sono, essi indietreggiarono e caddero a terra. |
| 7 | Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. | Gesù dunque domandò loro di nuovo: Chi cercate?. Essi dissero: Gesù il Nazareno. |
| 8 | Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: | Gesù rispose: Vi ho detto che io sono; se dunque cercate me lasciate andare via costoro; |
| 9 | That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. | e ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che egli aveva detto: Non ho perduto nessuno di quelli che mi hai dato, |
| 10 | Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. | Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada la sfoderò, percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli recise l'orecchio destro; or quel servo si chiamava Malco. |
| 11 | Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? | Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: Riponi la tua spada nel fodero; non berrò io il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?. |
| 12 | Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, | Allora il gruppo di soldati, il capitano e le guardie dei Giudei presero Gesù e lo legarono. |
| 13 | And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. | E lo condussero prima da Anna, perché era suocero di Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote in quell'anno. |
| 14 | Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. | Caiafa era colui che aveva consigliato ai Giudei che era conveniente che un uomo morisse per il popolo. |
| 15 | And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. | Or Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo seguivano Gesù. | 16 | But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. | Ma Pietro restò alla porta di fuori. Allora l'altro discepolo, che era noto al sommo sacerdote, uscì e parlò alla portinaia e fece entrare Pietro. |
| 17 | Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. | E la serva portinaia disse a Pietro: Non sei anche tu dei discepoli di quest'uomo?. Egli rispose: Non lo sono. |
| 18 | And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. | Intanto i servi e le guardie, acceso un fuoco di carboni, se ne stavano in piedi e si scaldavano, perché faceva freddo; anche Pietro stava in piedi con loro e si scaldava. |
| 19 | The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. | Or il sommo sacerdote interrogò Gesù riguardo ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina. |
| 20 | Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. | Gesù gli rispose: Io ho parlato al mondo apertamente; ho sempre insegnato nella sinagoga e nel tempio dove tutti i Giudei si radunano, e non ho detto niente in segreto. |
| 21 | Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. | Perché interroghi me? Interroga coloro che hanno udito ciò che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno le cose che ho detto. |
| 22 | And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? | Egli aveva appena detto queste parole, che una delle guardie che gli stava vicino diede a Gesù uno schiaffo, dicendo: Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?. |
| 23 | Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? | Gesù gli rispose: Se ho parlato male, mostra dov'è il male; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?. |
| 24 | Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. | Anna dunque lo rimandò legato a Caiafa, sommo sacerdote. |
| 25 | And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. | Intanto Simon Pietro stava là a scaldarsi. Gli dissero dunque: Non sei anche tu dei suoi discepoli? Ed egli lo negò e disse: Non lo sono. |
| 26 | One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? | Ma uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di colui a cui Pietro aveva reciso l'orecchio, disse: Non ti ho io visto nell'orto con lui?. |
| 27 | Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. | E Pietro lo negò di nuovo, e subito il gallo cantò. |
| 28 | Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. | Poi da Caiafa condussero Gesù nel pretorio; era mattino presto. Ma essi non entrarono nel pretorio, per non contaminarsi e poter così mangiare la Pasqua. |
| 29 | Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? | Pilato dunque uscì verso di loro e disse: Quale accusa portate contro quest'uomo?. |
| 30 | They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. | Essi risposero e gli dissero: Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te l'avremmo dato nelle mani. |
| 31 | Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: | Allora Pilato disse loro: Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge. Ma i Giudei gli dissero: A noi non è lecito far morire alcuno. |
| 32 | That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. | E ciò affinché si adempisse quello che Gesù aveva detto, indicando di quale morte doveva morire. |
| 33 | Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? | Pilato dunque rientrò nel pretorio chiamò Gesù e gli disse: Sei tu il re dei Giudei?. |
| 34 | Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? | Gesù gli rispose: Dici questo da te stesso, oppure altri te lo hanno detto di me?. |
| 35 | Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? | Pilato gli rispose: Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua nazione e i capi dei sacerdoti ti hanno consegnato nelle mie mani; che hai fatto?. |
| 36 | Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. | Gesù rispose: Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servi combatterebbero affinché io non fossi dato in mano dei Giudei; ma ora il mio regno non è di qui. |
| 37 | Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. | Allora Pilato gli disse: Dunque sei tu re?. Gesù rispose: Tu dici giustamente che io sono re; per questo io sono nato e per questo sono venuto nel mondo: per rendere testimonianza alla verità; chiunque è per la verità ascolta la mia voce. |
| 38 | Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. | Pilato gli chiese: Che cosa è verità?. E, detto questo, uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: Io non trovo alcuna colpa in lui. |
| 39 | But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? | Ma vi è tra voi l'usanza che io vi liberi uno nella Pasqua; volete dunque che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?. |
| 40 | Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. | Allora tutti di nuovo gridarono, dicendo: Non costui, ma Barabba. Or Barabba era un brigante. |
