| 2 | Vous convoitez, et vous n'avez pas ; vous êtes meurtriers, vous êtes jaloux, et vous n'arrivez pas à obtenir; vous êtes dans un état de lutte et de guerre; et vous n'obtenez pas, parce que vous ne demandez pas; | Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. |
| 3 | vous demandez, et vous ne recevez pas, parce que vous demandez mal, avec l'intention de satisfaire vos passions. | Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures. |
| 4 | Adultères, ne savez-vous pas que l'amitié du monde c'est l'inimitié contre Dieu ? Quiconque veut être ami du monde se rend ennemi de Dieu. | Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. |
| 5 | Ou bien pensez-vous que l'Ecriture dise en vain "C'est jusqu'à la jalousie que vous aime l'Esprit qu'il a mis en vous ?" | Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? |
| 6 | Mais il donne une grâce d'autant plus grande, selon ce que dit l'Ecriture : "Dieu résiste aux orgueilleux, et il accorde sa grâce aux humbles." | But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. |
| 7 | Soumettez-vous donc à Dieu; résistez au diable, et il s'enfuira de vous. | Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. |
| 8 | Approchez-vous de Dieu, et il s'approchera de vous. Nettoyez vos mains, pécheurs; purifiez vos coeurs, hommes à l'âme double. | Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. |
| 9 | Sentez votre misère; prenez le deuil, et pleurez que votre rire se change en pleurs, et votre joie en tristesse. | Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. |
| 10 | Humiliez-vous devant le Seigneur, et il vous élèvera. Frères, ne dites point de mal les uns des autres. | Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you. |
| 11 | Celui qui parle mal de son frère ou qui juge son frère, parle mal de la loi et juge la loi. Or, si tu juges la loi, tu n'es plus un observateur de la loi, mais tu t'en fais juge. | Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. |
| 12 | Il n'y a qu'un seul législateur et qu'un seul juge, celui qui a la puissance de sauver et de perdre. Mais qui es-tu, toi qui juges le prochain ? | One [only] is the lawgiver and judge, [even] he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor? |
| 13 | Eh bien donc vous qui dites : "Aujourd'hui ou demain nous irons dans telle ville, nous y séjournerons une année, nous trafiquerons, et nous ferons des profits ", | Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: |
| 14 | - vous qui ne savez pas ce qui arrivera demain; - car qu'est-ce que votre vie ? | whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. |
| 15 | Vous êtes une vapeur qui paraît un instant et s'évanouit ensuite : - au lieu de dire : "Si le Seigneur le veut ", ou : "Si nous sommes en vie, nous ferons ceci ou cela." | For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. |
| 16 | Mais maintenant vous vous vantez dans votre présomption. Toute jactance de cette sorte est mauvaise. | But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. |
| 17 | Celui donc qui sait faire ce qui est bien et qui ne le fait pas, commet un péché. | To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. |
