| 2 | For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. | poiché tutti manchiamo in molte cose. Se uno non sbaglia nel parlare, è un uomo perfetto, ed è pure capace di tenere a freno tutto il corpo. |
| 3 | Now if we put the horses` bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. | Ecco noi mettiamo il freno nella bocca dei cavalli, perché ci ubbidiscano, e così possiamo guidare tutto il loro corpo. |
| 4 | Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. | Ecco, anche le navi, benché siano tanto grandi e siano spinte da forti venti, sono guidate da un piccolissimo timone dovunque vuole il timoniere. |
| 5 | So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! | Così anche la lingua è un piccolo membro, ma si vanta di grandi cose. Considerate come un piccolo fuoco incendi una grande foresta! |
| 6 | And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. | Anche la lingua è un fuoco, è il mondo dell'iniquità. Posta com'è fra le nostre membra, la lingua contamina tutto il corpo, infiamma il corso della vita ed è infiammata dalla Geenna. |
| 7 | For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. | Infatti ogni sorta di bestie, di uccelli, di rettili e di animali marini può essere domata, ed è stata domata dalla razza umana, |
| 8 | But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison. | ma la lingua nessun uomo la può domare; è un male che non si può frenare, è piena di veleno mortifero. |
| 9 | Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: | Con essa benediciamo Dio e Padre, e con essa malediciamo gli uomini che sono fatti a somiglianza di Dio. |
| 10 | out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. | Dalla stessa bocca esce benedizione e maledizione. Fratelli miei, le cose non devono andare così. |
| 11 | Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter? | La fonte emette forse dalla stessa apertura il dolce e l'amaro? |
| 12 | Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt water yield sweet. | Può fratelli miei un fico produrre olive, o una vite fichi? Così nessuna fonte può dare acqua salata e acqua dolce. |
| 13 | Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. | Chi è savio e intelligente fra voi? Mostri con la buona condotta le sue opere fatte con mansuetudine di sapienza. |
| 14 | But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. | Ma se nel vostro cuore avete amara gelosia e spirito di contesa, non vantatevi e non mentite contro la verità. |
| 15 | This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. | Questa non è la sapienza che discende dall'alto, ma è terrena, animale e diabolica. |
| 16 | For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. | Dove infatti c'è invidia e contesa, lì c'è turbamento ed ogni sorta di opere malvagie. |
| 17 | But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. | Ma la sapienza che viene dall'alto prima di tutto è pura, poi pacifica, mite, docile, piena di misericordia e di frutti buoni, senza parzialità e senza ipocrisia. |
| 18 | And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace. | Or il frutto della giustizia si semina nella pace per quelli che si adoperano alla pace. |
