| 1 | And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. | Allora Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia di suo padre e pianse su di lui, e lo baciò. |
| 2 | And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. | Poi Giuseppe ordinò ai medici che erano al suo servizio di imbalsamare suo padre; e i medici imbalsamarono Israele. |
| 3 | And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. | Ci vollero quaranta giorni perché tale è il tempo necessario per l'imbalsamazione; e gli Egiziani lo piansero settanta giorni. |
| 4 | And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, | Quando i giorni del lutto fatto per lui furono passati, Giuseppe parlò alla casa del Faraone, dicendo: Deh, se ho trovato grazia ai vostri occhi, riferite al Faraone queste parole: |
| 5 | My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. | Mio padre mi ha fatto giurare e mi ha detto: "Ecco, io sto per morire; seppelliscimi nel sepolcro che ho scavato per me nel paese di Canaan". Ora dunque permetti che io salga a seppellire mio padre; poi tornerò. |
| 6 | And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. | Il Faraone rispose: Sali e seppellisci tuo padre come egli ti ha fatto giurare. |
| 7 | And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, | Allora Giuseppe salì a seppellire suo padre; e con lui salirono tutti i servi del Faraone, gli anziani della sua casa e tutti gli anziani del paese d'Egitto, |
| 8 | And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. | e tutta la casa di Giuseppe, i suoi fratelli e la casa di suo padre. Nel paese di Goscen lasciarono soltanto i loro bambini, le loro greggi e i loro armenti. |
| 9 | And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. | Con lui salirono pure carri e cavalieri, così da formare un enorme corteo di gente. |
| 10 | And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. | Come furono giunti all'aia di Atad, che è oltre il Giordano, vi fecero grandi e solenni lamenti; e Giuseppe osservò per suo padre un lutto di sette giorni. |
| 11 | And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. | Or quando gli abitanti del paese, i Cananei, videro il lutto dell'aia di Atad, dissero: Questo è un grave lutto per gli Egiziani!. Perciò quel luogo fu chiamato Abel-Mitsraim che è oltre il Giordano. |
| 12 | And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: | suoi figli fecero per lui quello che egli aveva ordinato loro. |
| 13 | For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. | I suoi figli lo trasportarono nel paese di Canaan e lo seppellirono nella spelonca del campo di Makpelah, di fronte a Mamre, che Abrahamo aveva comperato col campo da Efron l'Hitteo, come sepolcro di sua proprietà. |
| 14 | And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. | Dopo aver sepolto suo padre, Giuseppe tornò in Egitto con i suoi fratelli e con tutti quelli che erano saliti con lui a seppellire suo padre. |
| 15 | And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. | I fratelli di Giuseppe, quando videro che il loro padre era morto, dissero: Chissà se Giuseppe non nutra rancore verso di noi, e non ci renda tutto il male che gli abbiamo fatto?. |
| 16 | And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, | Allora mandarono a dire a Giuseppe: Tuo padre prima di morire diede quest'ordine dicendo: |
| 17 | So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. | "Così direte a Giuseppe: Deh, perdona ora ai tuoi fratelli il loro misfatto e il loro peccato, perché ti hanno fatto del male". Deh, perdona dunque ora il misfatto dei servi del DIO di tuo padre!. Giuseppe, quando gli parlarono così, pianse. |
| 18 | And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. | Poi vennero anche i suoi fratelli e si gettarono davanti a lui, e dissero: Ecco, siamo tuoi servi. |
| 19 | And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? | Giuseppe disse loro: Non temete; sono io forse al posto di DIO? |
| 20 | But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. | Voi avete macchinato del male contro di me; ma DIO ha voluto farlo servire al bene, per compiere quello che oggi avviene: conservare in vita un popolo numeroso. |
| 21 | Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. | Ora dunque non temete; io provvederò il nutrimento per voi e per i vostri figli. Così li confortò e parlò al cuore loro con dolcezza. |
| 22 | And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. | Così Giuseppe dimorò in Egitto, egli e la casa di suo padre, e visse centodieci anni. |
| 23 | And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. | Giuseppe vide figli di Efraim, fino alla terza generazione; anche i figli di Makir, figlio di Manasse, nacquero sulle sue ginocchia. |
| 24 | And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. | Poi Giuseppe disse ai suoi fratelli: Io sto per morire; ma DIO per certo vi visiterà e vi farà salire da questo paese nel paese che promise con giuramento ad Abrahamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe. |
| 25 | And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. | Giuseppe fece quindi giurare i figli d'Israele, dicendo: DIO per certo vi visiterà; allora voi porterete via da qui le mie ossa. |
| 26 | So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. | Poi Giuseppe morì, in età di centodieci anni; lo imbalsamarono e lo posero in una bara in Egitto. |
