| 3 | La voix de celui qui crie au désert est; préparez le chemin de l'Eternel, dressez parmi les landes les sentiers à notre Dieu. | The voice of one that crieth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of Jehovah; make level in the desert a highway for our God. |
| 4 | Toute vallée sera comblée, et toute montagne et tout coteau seront abaissés, et les lieux tortus seront redressés, et les lieux raboteux seront aplanis. | Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the uneven shall be made level, and the rough places a plain: |
| 5 | Alors la gloire de l'Eternel se manifestera, et toute chair ensemble la verra; car la bouche de l'Eternel a parlé. | and the glory of Jehovah shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken it. |
| 6 | La voix dit: crie; et on a répondu: que crierai-je? Toute chair est comme l'herbe, et toute sa grâce est comme la fleur d'un champ. | The voice of one saying, Cry. And one said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. |
| 7 | L'herbe est séchée, et la fleur est tombée, parce que le vent de l'Eternel a soufflé dessus; vraiment le peuple est comme l'herbe. | The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the breath of Jehovah bloweth upon it; surely the people is grass. |
| 8 | L'herbe est séchée, et la fleur est tombée; mais la parole de notre Dieu demeure éternellement. | The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever. |
| 9 | Sion, qui annonces de bonnes nouvelles, monte sur une haute montagne; Jérusalem, qui annonces de bonnes nouvelles, élève ta voix avec force; élève- la, ne crains point; dis aux villes de Juda; voici votre Dieu. | O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up on a high mountain; O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold, your God! |
| 10 | Voici, le Seigneur l'Eternel viendra contre le fort, et son bras dominera sur lui; voici son salaire est avec lui, et son loyer marche devant lui. | Behold, the Lord Jehovah will come as a mighty one, and his arm will rule for him: Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. |
| 11 | Il paîtra son troupeau, comme un berger, il assemblera les agneaux entre ses bras, il les placera en son sein; il conduira celles qui allaitent. | He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom, [and] will gently lead those that have their young. |
| 12 | Qui est celui qui a mesuré les eaux avec le creux de sa main, et qui a compassé les cieux avec la paume; qui a rassemblé toute la poussière de la terre dans un boisseau; et qui a pesé au crochet les montagnes, et les coteaux à la balance? | Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? |
| 13 | Qui a dirigé l'Esprit de l'Eternel, ou qui étant son conseiller, lui a montré quelque chose? | Who hath directed the Spirit of Jehovah, or being his counsellor hath taught him? |
| 14 | Avec qui a-t-il pris conseil, et qui l'a instruit, et lui a enseigné le sentier de jugement? Qui lui a enseigné la science, et lui a montré le chemin de la prudence? | With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding? |
| 15 | Voilà, les nations sont comme une goutte qui tombe d'un sceau, et elles sont réputées comme la menue poussière d'une balance; voilà, il a jeté çà et là les Iles comme de la poudre. | Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are accounted as the small dust of the balance: Behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. |
| 16 | Et le Liban ne suffirait pas pour faire le feu, et les bêtes qui y sont ne seraient pas suffisantes pour l'holocauste. | And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt-offering. |
| 17 | Toutes les nations sont devant lui comme un rien, et il ne les considère que comme de la poussière, et comme un néant. | All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing, and vanity. |
| 18 | A qui donc ferez-vous ressembler le Dieu Fort, et quelle ressemblance lui approprierez-vous? | To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? |
| 19 | L'ouvrier fond l'image, et l'orfèvre étend de l'or par-dessus, et lui fond des chaînettes d'argent. | The image, a workman hath cast [it], and the goldsmith overlayeth it with gold, and casteth [for it] silver chains. |
| 20 | Celui qui est si pauvre qu'il n'a pas de quoi offrir, choisit un bois qui ne pourrisse point, et cherche un ouvrier expert, pour faire une image taillée qui ne bouge point. | He that is too impoverished for [such] an oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a skilful workman to set up a graven image, that shall not be moved. |
| 21 | N'aurez-vous jamais de connaissance? n'écouterez-vous jamais? ne vous a-t-il pas été déclaré dès le commencement? ne l'avez-vous pas entendu dès les fondements de la terre? | Have ye not known? have yet not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? |
| 22 | C'est lui qui est assis au-dessus du globe de la terre, et à qui ses habitants sont comme des sauterelles; c'est lui qui étend les cieux comme un voile, il les a même étendus comme une tente pour y habiter. | [It is] he that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in; |
| 23 | C'est lui qui réduit les Princes à rien, et qui fait être les gouverneurs de la terre comme une chose de néant. | that bringeth princes to nothing; that maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. |
| 24 | Même ils ne seront point plantés, même ils ne seront point semés, même leur tronc ne jettera point de racine en terre; même il soufflera sur eux, et ils sécheront, et le tourbillon les emportera comme de la paille. | Yea, they have not been planted; yea, they have not been sown; yea, their stock hath not taken root in the earth: moreover he bloweth upon them, and they wither, and the whirlwind taketh them away as stubble. |
| 25 | A qui donc me ferez-vous ressembler, et à qui serais-je égalé? dit le Saint. | To whom then will ye liken me, that I should be equal [to him]? saith the Holy One. |
| 26 | Elevez vos yeux en haut, et regardez; qui a créé ces choses? c'est celui qui fait sortir leur armée par ordre, et qui les appelle toutes par leur nom; il n'y en a pas une qui manque, à cause de la grandeur de ses forces, et parce qu'il excelle en puissance. | Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these, that bringeth out their host by number; he calleth them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and for that he is strong in power, not one is lacking. |
| 27 | Pourquoi donc dirais-tu, ô Jacob! et pourquoi dirais-tu, ô Israël! mon état est caché à l'Eternel, et mon droit est inconnu à mon Dieu? | Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God? |
| 28 | Ne sais-tu pas et n'as-tu pas entendu que le Dieu d'éternité, l'Eternel, a créé les bornes de la terre? il ne se lasse point, et ne se travaille point, et il n'y a pas moyen de sonder son intelligence. | Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding. |
| 29 | C'est lui qui donne de la force à celui qui est las, et qui multiplie la force de celui qui n'a aucune vigueur. | He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might he increaseth strength. |
| 30 | Les jeunes gens se lassent et se travaillent, même les jeunes gens d'élite tombent sans force. | Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: |
| 31 | Mais ceux qui s'attendent à l'Eternel prennent de nouvelles forces; les ailes leur reviennent comme aux aigles; ils courront; et ne se fatigueront point; ils marcheront, et ne se lasseront point. | but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint. |
