| 1 | For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them. | Così io ho considerato tutto questo nel mio cuore per cercare di chiarirlo: che i giusti e i saggi e le loro opere sono nelle mani di DIO. | 2 | All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. | Tutto succede egualmente a tutti: la stessa sorte attende il giusto e l'empio il buono, il puro e l'impuro, chi offre sacrifici e chi non li offre. Come è il buono così è il peccatore, e chi giura è come chi teme di giurare. |
| 3 | This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead. | Questo è un male in tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole: hanno tutti la stessa sorte, e inoltre il cuore dei figli degli uomini è pieno di malvagità e la follia risiede nel loro cuore mentre vivono; poi se ne vanno ai morti. |
| 4 | For to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. | Finché uno è unito a tutti gli altri viventi c'è speranza, perché un cane vivo val meglio di un leone morto. |
| 5 | For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. | I viventi infatti sanno che moriranno ma i morti non sanno nulla; per loro non c'è più alcuna ricompensa, perché la loro memoria è dimenticata. |
| 6 | As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun. | Anche il loro amore, il loro odio e la loro invidia sono ormai periti, ed essi non avranno mai più alcuna parte in tutto ciò che si fa sotto il sole. |
| 7 | Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works. | Va mangia il tuo pane con gioia e bevi il tuo vino con cuore lieto, perché DIO ha già gradito le tue opere. |
| 8 | Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil. | Le tue vesti siano bianche in ogni tempo, e l'olio non manchi mai sul tuo capo. |
| 9 | Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of thy life of vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all thy days of vanity: for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labor wherein thou laborest under the sun. | Godi la vita con la moglie che ami per tutti i giorni della tua vita di vanità, che egli ti ha concesso sotto il sole per tutti i giorni della tua vanità, perché questa è la tua parte nella vita e nella fatica che compi sotto il sole. |
| 10 | Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest. | Tutto ciò che la tua mano trova da fare, fallo con tutta la tua forza, perché nello Sceol dove vai, non c'è più ne lavoro né pensiero né conoscenza né sapienza. |
| 11 | I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. | Ho pure visto sotto il sole che la corsa non è vinta da chi è veloce, né la battaglia dai forti; né il pane va ai saggi, né le ricchezze agli uomini intelligenti, né il favore a quelli abili, ma a tutti le cose avvengono secondo il tempo e il caso. |
| 12 | For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them. | Poiché l'uomo non conosce la sua ora: come i pesci che sono presi in una rete crudele, e come gli uccelli che sono colti in un laccio, così i figli degli uomini sono presi nel laccio al tempo dell'avversità, quando piomba su di loro improvvisamente. |
| 13 | I have also seen wisdom under the sun on this wise, and it seemed great unto me: | Ho visto anche questo esempio di sapienza sotto il sole, e mi è parsa grande. |
| 14 | There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it. | C'era una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; un gran re le venne contro, la cinse d'assedio e vi costruì contro grandi bastioni. |
| 15 | Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. | Si trovava però in essa un uomo povero e saggio che con la sua sapienza salvò la città. Tuttavia nessuno si ricordò di quell'uomo povero. |
| 16 | Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man`s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. | Allora io dissi: La sapienza val più della forza; ma la sapienza del povero è disprezzata e le sue parole non sono ascoltate. |
| 17 | The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. | Le parole dei saggi pronunciate con calma si ascoltano meglio delle grida di chi domina fra gli stolti. |
| 18 | Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroyeth much good. | La sapienza val più delle armi da guerra; ma un solo peccatore distrugge un gran bene. |
