| 4 | One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. | Une génération passe, et l'autre génération vient, mais la terre demeure toujours ferme. |
| 5 | The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. | Le soleil aussi se lève, et le soleil se couche, et il soupire après le lieu d'où il se lève. |
| 6 | The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. | Le vent va vers le Midi, et tournoie vers l'Aquilon; il va tournoyant çà et là, et il retourne après ses circuits. |

| 13 | And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith. | Et j'ai appliqué mon coeur à rechercher et à sonder par la sagesse tout ce qui se faisait sous les cieux, ce qui est une occupation fâcheuse que Dieu a donnée aux hommes, afin qu'ils s'y occupent. |
| 14 | I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. | J'ai regardé tout ce qui se faisait sous le soleil, et voilà tout est vanité, et rongement d'esprit. |
| 15 | That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered. | Ce qui est tortu ne se peut redresser; et les défauts ne se peuvent nombrer. |
| 16 | I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. | J'ai parlé en mon coeur, disant: Voici, je me suis agrandi et accru en sagesse, par-dessus tous ceux qui ont été avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon coeur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de science. |
| 17 | And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. | Et j'ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître les sottises et la folie, mais j'ai reconnu que cela aussi était un rongement d'esprit. |
| 18 | For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow. | Car où il y a abondance de sagesse, il y a abondance de chagrin; et celui qui s'accroît de la science, s'accroît du chagrin. |
