| 3 | parce que toutes les nations ont bu du vin de la fureur de son impudicité, que les rois de la terre se sont souillés avec elle, et que les marchands de la terre se sont enrichis par l'excès de son luxe." | For by the wine of the wrath of her fornication all the nations are fallen; and the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth waxed rich by the power of her wantonness. |
| 4 | Et j'entendis du ciel une autre voix qui disait : "Sortez du milieu d'elle, ô mon peuple, afin de ne point participer à ses péchés, et de n'avoir point part à ses calamités; | And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come forth, my people, out of her, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: |
| 5 | car ses péchés se sont accumulés jusqu'au ciel, et Dieu s'est souvenu de ses iniquités. | for her sins have reached even unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. |
| 6 | Payez-la comme elle-même a payé, et rendez-lui au double selon ses oeuvres; dans la coupe où elle a versé à boire, versez-lui le double ; | Render unto her even as she rendered, and double [unto her] the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double. |
| 7 | autant elle s'est glorifiée et plongée dans le luxe, autant donnez-lui de tourment et de deuil. Parce qu'elle dit en son coeur : Je trône en reine; je ne suis point veuve et ne connaîtrai point le deuil ! | How much soever she glorified herself, and waxed wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning. |
| 8 | à cause de cela, en un même jour, les calamités fondront sur elle, la mort, le deuil et la famine, et elle sera consumée par le feu ; Car il est puissant le [Seigneur] Dieu qui l'a jugée." | Therefore in one day shall her plagues come, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judged her. |
| 9 | Les rois de la terre qui se sont livrés avec elle à l'impudicité et au luxe, pleureront et se lamenteront sur son sort, quand ils verront la fumée de son embrasement. | And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived wantonly with her, shall weep and wail over her, when they look upon the smoke of her burning, |
| 10 | Se tenant à distance, par crainte de ses tourments, ils diront "Malheur ! Malheur! O grande ville, Babylone, ô puissante cité, en une heure est venu ton jugement! " | standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. |
| 11 | Et les marchands de la terre pleurent et sont dans le deuil à son sujet, parce que personne n'achète plus leur cargaison : | And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more; |
| 12 | cargaison d'or, d'argent, de pierres précieuses, de perles, de lin fin, de pourpre, de soie et d'écarlate, et le bois de senteur de toute espèce, et toute sorte d'objets d'ivoire, et toute sorte d'objets de bois très précieux, d'airain, de fer et de marbre, | merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet; and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble; |
| 13 | et la cannelle, les parfums, la myrrhe, l'encens, le vin, l'huile, la fleur de farine, le blé, les bestiaux, les brebis, et des chevaux, et des chars, et des corps et des âmes d'hommes. | and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and [merchandise] of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men. |
| 14 | Les fruits dont tu faisais tes délices s'en sont allés loin de toi; toutes les choses délicates et magnifiques sont perdues pour toi, et tu ne les retrouveras plus. | And the fruits which thy soul lusted after are gone from thee, and all things that were dainty and sumptuous are perished from thee, and [men] shall find them no more at all. |
| 15 | Les marchands de ces produits, qui se sont enrichis avec elle, se tiendront à distance par crainte de ses tourments; ils pleureront et se désoleront, disant : | The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning; |
| 16 | "Malheur! Malheur ! O grande ville, qui était vêtue de fin lin, de pourpre et d'écarlate, et qui était richement parée d'or, de pierres précieuses et de perles, en une heure ont été dévastées tant de richesses! " | saying, Woe, woe, the great city, she that was arrayed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearl! |
| 17 | Et tous les pilotes, et tous ceux qui naviguent vers la ville, les matelots et tous ceux qui exploitent la mer, se tenaient à distance, | for in an hour so great riches is made desolate. And every shipmaster, and every one that saileth any wither, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood afar off, |
| 18 | et ils s'écriaient en voyant la fumée de son embrasement "Que pouvait-on comparer à cette grande ville ?" | and cried out as they looked upon the smoke of her burning, saying, What [city] is like the great city? |
| 19 | Et ils jetaient de la poussière sur leur tête, et ils criaient en pleurant et en se désolant : "Malheur ! Malheur ! La grande ville dont l'opulence a enrichi tous ceux qui avaient des vaisseaux sur la mer, en une heure elle a été réduite en désert ! " | And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, wherein all that had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. |
| 20 | Réjouis-toi sur elle, ô ciel, et vous aussi, les saints, les apôtres et tes prophètes; car, en la jugeant, Dieu vous a fait justice. | Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her. |
| 21 | Alors un ange puissant prit une pierre semblable à une grande meule, et la lança dans la mer, en disant : "Ainsi sera soudain précipitée Babylone, la grande ville, et on ne la retrouvera plus. | And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all. |
| 22 | En toi on n'entendra plus les sons des joueurs de harpe, des musiciens, des joueurs de flûte et de trompette; en toi on ne trouvera plus d'artisan d'aucun métier, et le bruit de la meule ne s'y fera plus entendre; | And the voice of harpers and minstrels and flute-players and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft, shall be found any more at all in thee; and the voice of a mill shall be heard no more at all in thee; |
| 23 | ou n'y verra plus briller la lumière de la lampe; on n'y entendra plus la voix de l'époux et de l'épouse parce que tes marchands étaient les grands de la terre, parce que toutes les nations ont été égarées par tes enchantements. | and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth; for with thy sorcery were all the nations deceived. |
| 24 | Et c'est dans cette ville qu'on a trouvé le sang des prophètes et des saints, et de tous ceux qui ont été égorgés sur ta terre." | And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth. |
