| 2 | Et étant montés dans un navire d'Adramite, nous partîmes pour tirer vers les quartiers d'Asie, et Aristarque Macédonien de la ville de Thessalonique, était avec nous. | And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail unto the places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us. |
| 3 | Le jour suivant nous arrivâmes à Sidon; et Jules traitant humainement Paul, lui permit d'aller vers ses amis, afin qu'ils eussent soin de lui. | And the next day we touched at Sidon: and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go unto his friends and refresh himself. |
| 4 | Puis étant partis de là, nous tînmes notre route au-dessous de Cypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires. | And putting to sea from thence, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. |
| 5 | Et après avoir passé la mer qui est vis-à-vis de la Cilicie et de la Pamphylie, nous vînmes à Myra, ville de Lycie, | And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, [a city] of Lycia. |
| 6 | Où le centenier trouva un navire d'Alexandrie qui allait en Italie, dans lequel il nous fit monter. | And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy; and he put us therein. |
| 7 | Et comme nous naviguions pesamment durant plusieurs jours, en sorte qu'à grande peine pûmes-nous arriver jusques à la vue de Guide, parce que le vent ne nous poussait point, nous passâmes au-dessous de Crète, vers Salmone. | And when we had sailed slowly many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not further suffering us, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone; |
| 8 | Et la côtoyant avec peine, nous vînmes en un lieu qui est appelé Beaux-ports, près duquel était la ville de Lasée. | and with difficulty coasting along it we came unto a certain place called Fair Havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. |
| 9 | Et parce qu'il s'était écoulé beaucoup de temps, et que la navigation était déjà périlleuse, vu que même le jeûne était déjà passé, Paul les exhortait, | And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul admonished them, |
| 10 | En leur disant: hommes, je vois que la navigation sera périlleuse et que nous serons exposés non seulement à la perte de la charge du vaisseau, mais même de nos propres vies. | and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the lading and the ship, but also of our lives. |
| 11 | Mais le centenier croyait plus le Pilote, et le maître du navire, que ce que Paul disait. | But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul. |
| 12 | Et parce que le port n'était pas propre pour y passer l'hiver, la plupart furent d'avis de partir de là, pour tâcher d'aborder à Phénix, qui est un port de Crète, situé contre le vent d'Afrique et du couchant septentrional, afin d'y passer l'hiver. | And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to put to sea from thence, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter [there; which is] a haven of Crete, looking northeast and south-east. |
| 13 | Et le vent du Midi commençant à souffler doucement, ils crurent venir à bout de leur dessein, et étant partis, ils côtoyèrent Crète de plus près. | And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close in shore. |
| 14 | Mais un peu après un vent orageux du nord-est, qu'on appelle Euroclydon, se leva du côté de l'île. | But after no long time there beat down from it a tempestuous wind, which is called Euraquilo: |
| 15 | Et le navire étant emporté par le vent, de telle sorte qu'il ne pouvait point résister, nous fûmes emportés, ayant abandonné le navire au vent. | and when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we gave way [to it,] and were driven. |
| 16 | Et ayant passé au-dessous d'une petite île, appelée Clauda, à grande peine pûmes-nous être maîtres de l'esquif; | And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat: |
| 17 | Mais l'ayant tirée à nous, les matelots cherchaient tous les remèdes possibles, en liant le navire par-dessous; et comme ils craignaient de tomber sur des bancs de sable, ils abattirent les voiles, et ils étaient portés de cette manière. | and when they had hoisted it up, they used helps, under-girding the ship; and, fearing lest they should be cast upon the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven. |
| 18 | Or parce que nous étions agités d'une grande tempête, le jour suivant ils jetèrent les marchandises dans la mer. | And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the [the freight] overboard; |
| 19 | Puis le troisième jour nous jetâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire. | and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship. |
| 20 | Et comme il ne nous parut durant plusieurs jours ni soleil ni étoiles, et qu'une grande tempête nous agitait violemment, toute espérance de nous pouvoir sauver à l'avenir nous fut ôtée. | And when neither sun nor stars shone upon [us] for many days, and no small tempest lay on [us,] all hope that we should be saved was now taken away. |
| 21 | Mais après qu'ils eurent été longtemps sans manger, Paul se tenant alors debout au milieu d'eux, leur dit: ô hommes! certes il fallait me croire, et ne point partir de Crète, afin d'éviter cette tempête et cette perte. | And when they had been long without food, then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss. |
| 22 | Mais maintenant je vous exhorte d'avoir bon courage: car nul de vous ne perdra la vie, et le navire seul périra. | And now I exhort you to be of good cheer; for there shall be no loss of life among you, but [only] of the ship. |
| 23 | Car en cette propre nuit un Ange du Dieu à qui je suis, et lequel je sers, s'est présenté à moi, | For there stood by me this night an angel of the God whose I am, whom also I serve, |
| 24 | Me disant: Paul, ne crains point, il faut que tu sois présenté à César; et voici, Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi. | saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Caesar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee. |
| 25 | C'est pourquoi, ô hommes! ayez bon courage, car j'ai cette confiance en Dieu que la chose arrivera comme elle m'a été dite. | Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me. |
| 26 | Mais il faut que nous soyons jetés contre quelque île. | But we must be cast upon a certain island. |
| 27 | Quand donc la quatorzième nuit fut venue, comme nous étions portés çà et là sur la mer Adriatique, les matelots eurent opinion environ sur le minuit qu'ils approchaient de quelque contrée. | But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven to and fro in the [sea of] Adria, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some country: |
| 28 | Et ayant jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; puis étant passés un peu plus loin, et ayant encore jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent quinze brasses. | and they sounded, and found twenty fathoms; and after a little space, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms. |
| 29 | Mais craignant de donner contre quelque écueil, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, désirant que le jour vînt. | And fearing lest haply we should be cast ashore on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for the day. |
| 30 | Et comme les matelots cherchaient à s'enfuir du navire, ayant descendu l'esquif en mer, sous prétexte d'aller porter loin les ancres du côté de la proue, | And as the sailors were seeking to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under color as though they would lay out anchors from the foreship, |
| 31 | Paul dit au centenier et aux soldats: si ceux-ci ne demeurent dans le navire, vous ne pouvez point vous sauver. | Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. |
| 32 | Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordes de l'esquif, et le laissèrent tomber. | Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off. |
| 33 | Et jusqu'à ce que le jour vînt, Paul les exhorta tous de prendre quelque nourriture, en leur disant: c'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour qu'en attendant, vous êtes demeurés à jeun, et n'avez rien pris; | And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing. |
| 34 | Je vous exhorte donc à prendre quelque nourriture, vu que cela est nécessaire pour votre conservation: car il ne tombera pas un cheveu de la tête d'aucun de vous. | Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you. |
| 35 | Et quand il eut dit ces choses, il prit du pain, et rendit grâces à Dieu en présence de tous, et l'ayant rompu il commença a manger. | And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; and he brake it, and began to eat. |
| 36 | Alors ayant tous pris courage, ils commencèrent aussi à manger. | Then were they all of good cheer, and themselves also took food. |
| 37 | Or nous étions en tout dans le navire deux cent soixante-seize personnes. | And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. |
| 38 | Et quand ils eurent mangé jusqu'à être rassasiés, ils allégèrent le navire, en jetant le blé dans la mer. | And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea. |
| 39 | Et le jour étant venu ils ne reconnaissaient point le pays; mais ils aperçurent un golfe ayant rivage, et ils résolurent d'y faire échouer le navire, s'il leur était possible. | And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they perceived a certain bay with a beach, and they took counsel whether they could drive the ship upon it. |
| 40 | C'est pourquoi ayant retiré les ancres, ils abandonnèrent le navire à la mer, lâchant en même temps les attaches des gouvernails; et ayant tendu la voile de l'artimon, ils tirèrent vers le rivage. | And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders; and hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. |
| 41 | Mais étant tombés en un lieu où deux courants se rencontraient, ils y heurtèrent le navire, et la proue s'y étant enfoncée demeurait ferme, mais la poupe se rompait par la violence des vagues. | But lighting upon a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the foreship struck and remained unmoveable, but the stern began to break up by the violence [of the waves]. |
| 42 | Alors le conseil des soldats fut de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un s'étant sauvé à la nage, ne s'enfuît. | And the soldiers` counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any [of them] should swim out, and escape. |
| 43 | Mais le centenier voulant sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter ce conseil, et il commanda que ceux qui pourraient nager se jetassent dehors les premiers, et se sauvassent à terre; | But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land; |
| 44 | Et le reste, les uns sur des planches, et les autres sur quelques pièces du navire; et ainsi il arriva que tous se sauvèrent à terre. | and the rest, some on planks, and some on [other] things from the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to the land. |
