| 2 | Nous montâmes sur un vaisseau d'Adramytte qui devait faire voile vers les côtes de l'Asie pour les longer, et nous partîmes, ayant avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique. | And embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail unto the places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us. |
| 3 | Le jour suivant, nous abordâmes à Sidon, et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec bienveillance, lui permit d'aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins. | And the next day we touched at Sidon: and Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go unto his friends and refresh himself. |
| 4 | Etant partis de là, nous côtoyâmes l'île de Chypre, parce que les vents étaient contraires. | And putting to sea from thence, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. |
| 5 | Après avoir traversé la mer qui baigne la Cilicie et la Pamphylie, nous arrivâmes à Myre de Lycie. | And when we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, [a city] of Lycia. |
| 6 | Le centurion y ayant trouvé un vaisseau d'Alexandrie en partance pour l'Italie, il nous transborda. | And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy; and he put us therein. |
| 7 | Naviguant lentement pendant plusieurs jours et parvenus non sans peine à la hauteur de Cnide, le vent ne nous étant pas favorable, nous passâmes en dessous de la Crète, du côté de Salmoné, | And when we had sailed slowly many days, and were come with difficulty over against Cnidus, the wind not further suffering us, we sailed under the lee of Crete, over against Salmone; |
| 8 | et longeant la côte non sans peine, nous arrivâmes à un endroit appelé Beaux-Ports, près duquel était la ville de Lasaia. | and with difficulty coasting along it we came unto a certain place called Fair Havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. |
| 9 | Comme un temps assez long s'était écoulé et que la navigation devenait dangereuse, car l'(époque du) jeûne était passée, Paul avertit (les autres), leur disant : | And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul admonished them, |
| 10 | "O hommes, je vois que la navigation va se faire avec du danger et de graves dommages non seulement pour la cargaison et le vaisseau, mais encore pour nos personnes." | and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the lading and the ship, but also of our lives. |
| 11 | Mais le centurion avait plus de confiance dans le pilote et le patron du vaisseau que dans les dires de Paul. | But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship, than to those things which were spoken by Paul. |
| 12 | Et comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis d'en partir, dans l'espoir de rallier, pour (y) passer l'hiver, Phénix, port de Crète qui regarde le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest. | And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to put to sea from thence, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, and winter [there; which is] a haven of Crete, looking northeast and south-east. |
| 13 | Un léger vent du sud vint à souffler; se croyant maîtres d'exécuter leur dessin, ils levèrent (l'ancre) et côtoyèrent de près la Crète. | And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close in shore. |
| 14 | Mais bientôt en descendit un vent d'ouragan, appelé Euraquilon. | But after no long time there beat down from it a tempestuous wind, which is called Euraquilo: |
| 15 | Le vaisseau étant entraîné, sans pouvoir tenir tête au vente, nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive. | and when the ship was caught, and could not face the wind, we gave way [to it,] and were driven. |
| 16 | Filant en dessous d'un îlot appelé Cauda, nous eûmes peine à nous rendre maîtres de la chaloupe. | And running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat: |
| 17 | Quand on l'eut hissée, on eut recours aux moyens de secours, on ceindra le vaisseau, et après qu'on eut lâché l'ancre flottante, dans la crainte d'échouer sur la Syrte, on fut emporté à la dérive. | and when they had hoisted it up, they used helps, under-girding the ship; and, fearing lest they should be cast upon the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so were driven. |
| 18 | Comme nous étions violemment battus par la tempête, le lendemain on jeta de la cargaison, | And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw the [the freight] overboard; |
| 19 | et le troisième jour on lança (à la mer) avec les mains les agrès du navire. | and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship. |
| 20 | Pendant plusieurs jours, ni le soleil ni les étoiles ne se montrèrent, et la tempête continuait de sévir avec violence : dès lors tout espoir de salut nous était enlevé. | And when neither sun nor stars shone upon [us] for many days, and no small tempest lay on [us,] all hope that we should be saved was now taken away. |
| 21 | Comme on avait été longtemps sans manger, Paul alors, se tenant au milieu d'eux, dit : "Vous auriez dû m'écouter, ô hommes, ne point partir de Crète et nous épargner ce péril et ce dommage. | And when they had been long without food, then Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have set sail from Crete, and have gotten this injury and loss. |
| 22 | Et maintenant, je vous avertis de prendre courage, car aucun de vous ne perdra la vie; le vaisseau seul (sera perdu). | And now I exhort you to be of good cheer; for there shall be no loss of life among you, but [only] of the ship. |
| 23 | Cette nuit même, en effet, un ange du Dieu à qui j'appartiens et que je sers, s'est présenté à moi, | For there stood by me this night an angel of the God whose I am, whom also I serve, |
| 24 | disant : "Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici que Dieu t'a fait don de tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi." | saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must stand before Caesar: and lo, God hath granted thee all them that sail with thee. |
| 25 | Courage donc, ô hommes, car j'ai confiance en Dieu qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit. | Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even so as it hath been spoken unto me. |
| 26 | Mais il nous faut échouer sur quelque île." | But we must be cast upon a certain island. |
| 27 | La quatorzième nuit venue, comme nous étions ballottés dans l'Adriatique, les matelots soupçonnèrent, vers le milieu de la nuit, qu'on approchait de quelque terre. | But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven to and fro in the [sea of] Adria, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some country: |
| 28 | Jetant la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, il la jetèrent de nouveau et ils trouvèrent quinze brasses. | and they sounded, and found twenty fathoms; and after a little space, they sounded again, and found fifteen fathoms. |
| 29 | Dans la crainte de tomber quelque part sur des récifs, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et ils souhaitaient la venue du jour. | And fearing lest haply we should be cast ashore on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for the day. |
| 30 | Mais comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du vaisseau et que, sous prétexte d'élonger des ancres de la proue, ils descendaient la chaloupe à la mer, | And as the sailors were seeking to flee out of the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, under color as though they would lay out anchors from the foreship, |
| 31 | Paul dit au centurion et aux soldats : "Si ceux-là ne restent pas sur le vaisseau, vous ne pouvez être sauvés." | Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. |
| 32 | Alors les soldats coupèrent les amarres de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber. | Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off. |
| 33 | En attendant le jour, Paul exhortait tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture, disant : "C'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour que vous passez dans l'attente, à jeun, sans rien prendre. | And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take some food, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing. |
| 34 | Je vous engage donc à manger, car cela importe à votre salut; aucun de vous, en effet, ne perdra un cheveu de sa tête." | Wherefore I beseech you to take some food: for this is for your safety: for there shall not a hair perish from the head of any of you. |
| 35 | Cela dit, il prit du pain, et après avoir rendu grâces à Dieu devant tous, il le rompit et se mit à manger. | And when he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; and he brake it, and began to eat. |
| 36 | Et tous, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi. | Then were they all of good cheer, and themselves also took food. |
| 37 | Nous étions en tout, sur le vaisseau, deux cent soixante-seize personnes. | And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. |
| 38 | Après avoir mangé à satiété, ils allégeaient le vaisseau en jetant le blé à la mer. | And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea. |
| 39 | Le jour venu, ils ne reconnaissaient pas la terre; mais ils apercevaient une baie qui avait une plage, et ils résolurent d'y faire échouer le vaisseau, s'ils le pouvaient. | And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they perceived a certain bay with a beach, and they took counsel whether they could drive the ship upon it. |
| 40 | Ils défirent les ancres, qu'ils abandonnèrent à la mer, et lâchèrent en même temps les attaches des gouvernails; puis, tendant au vent la voile d'artimon, ils se dirigeaient vers la plage. | And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosing the bands of the rudders; and hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. |
| 41 | Mais, étant tombés sur une langue de terre, ils y firent engager le navire : la proue, enfoncée, demeurait immobile, tandis que la poupe se brisait par le choc. | But lighting upon a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the foreship struck and remained unmoveable, but the stern began to break up by the violence [of the waves]. |
| 42 | Or les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un d'entre eux ne s'échappât à la nage. | And the soldiers` counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any [of them] should swim out, and escape. |
| 43 | Mais le centurion, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter leur dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter à l'eau les premiers et de gagner la terre, | But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stayed them from their purpose; and commanded that they who could swim should cast themselves overboard, and get first to the land; |
| 44 | et aux autres (de se mettre) qui sur des planches, qui sur des débris du vaisseau. Et ainsi tous atteignirent la terre sains et saufs. | and the rest, some on planks, and some on [other] things from the ship. And so it came to pass, that they all escaped safe to the land. |
