| 2 | Et le souverain Sacrificateur, et les premiers d'entre les Juifs, comparurent devant lui contre Paul, et ils priaient Festus; | And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul; and they besought him, |
| 3 | Et lui demandaient cette grâce contre Paul, qu'il le fît venir à Jérusalem; car ils avaient dressé des embûches pour le tuer par le chemin. | asking a favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem; laying a plot to kill him on the way. |
| 4 | Mais Festus leur répondit que Paul était bien gardé à Césarée, où il devait retourner lui-même bientôt. | Howbeit Festus answered, that Paul was kept in charge at Caesarea, and that he himself was about to depart [thither] shortly. |
| 5 | C'est pourquoi, dit-il, que ceux d'entre vous qui le peuvent faire, y descendent avec moi; et s'il y a quelque crime en cet homme, qu'ils l'accusent. | Let them therefore, saith he, that are of power among you go down with me, and if there is anything amiss in the man, let them accuse him. |
| 6 | Et n'ayant pas demeuré parmi eux plus de dix jours, il descendit à Césarée; et le lendemain il s'assit au siège judicial, et il commanda que Paul fût amené. | And when he had tarried among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and on the morrow he sat on the judgment-seat, and commanded Paul to be brought. |
| 7 | Et comme il fut venu là, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem l'environnèrent, le chargeant de plusieurs grands crimes, lesquels ils ne pouvaient prouver. | And when he was come, the Jews that had come down from Jerusalem stood round about him, bringing against him many and grievous charges which they could not prove; |
| 8 | Paul répondant qu'il n'avait péché en rien, ni contre la Loi des Juifs, ni contre le Temple, ni contre César. | while Paul said in his defense, Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I sinned at all. |
| 9 | Mais Festus voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, répondit à Paul, et dit: veux-tu monter à Jérusalem, et y être jugé de ces choses devant moi? | But Festus, desiring to gain favor with the Jews, answered Paul and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me? |
| 10 | Et Paul dit: je comparais devant le siège judicial de César, où il faut que je sois jugé: je n'ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le connais toi-même très bien. | But Paul said, I am standing before Caesar`s judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou also very well knowest. |
| 11 | Que si je leur ai fait tort, ou que j'aie fait quelque chose digne de mort, je ne refuse point de mourir; mais s'il n'est rien de ce dont ils m'accusent, personne ne me peut livrer à eux: j'en appelle à César. | If then I am a wrong-doer, and have committed anything worthy of death, I refuse not to die; but if none of those things is [true] whereof these accuse me, no man can give me up unto them. I appeal unto Caesar. |
| 12 | Alors Festus ayant conféré avec le Conseil, lui répondit: en as-tu appelé à César? tu iras à César. | Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Thou hast appealed unto Caesar: unto Caesar shalt thou go. |
| 13 | Or quelques jours après, le Roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée pour saluer Festus. | Now when certain days were passed, Agrippa the King and Bernice arrived at Caesarea, and saluted Festus. |
| 14 | Et après avoir demeuré là plusieurs jours, Festus fit mention au Roi de l'affaire de Paul, disant: un certain homme a été laissé prisonnier par Félix. | And as they tarried there many days, Festus laid Paul`s case before the King, saying, There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix; |
| 15 | Sur le sujet duquel, comme j'étais à Jérusalem, les principaux Sacrificateurs et les Anciens des Juifs sont comparus, sollicitant sa condamnation; | about whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed [me], asking for sentence against him. |
| 16 | Mais je leur ai répondu que ce n'est point l'usage des Romains de livrer quelqu'un à la mort, avant que celui qui est accusé ait ses accusateurs présents, et qu'il ait lieu de se défendre du crime. | To whom I answered, that it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man, before that the accused have the accusers face to face, and have had opportunity to make his defense concerning the matter laid against him. |
| 17 | Quand donc ils furent venus ici, sans que j'usasse d'aucun délai, le jour suivant étant assis au siège judicial, je commandai que cet homme fût amené; | When therefore they were come together here, I made no delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment-seat, and commanded the man to be brought. |
| 18 | Et ses accusateurs étant là présents, ils n'alléguèrent aucun des crimes dont je pensais qu'ils l'accuseraient. | Concerning whom, when the accusers stood up, they brought no charge of such evil things as I supposed; |
| 19 | Mais ils avaient quelques disputes contre lui touchant leurs superstitions, et touchant un certain Jésus mort, que Paul affirmait être vivant. | but had certain questions against him of their own religion, and of one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. |
| 20 | Or comme j'étais fort en peine pour savoir ce que c'était, je demandai à cet homme s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem, et y être jugé de ces choses. | And I, being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things, asked whether he would go to Jerusalem and there be judged of these matters. |
| 21 | Mais parce qu'il en appela, demandant d'être réservé à la connaissance d'Auguste, je commandai qu'il fût gardé jusqu'à ce que je l'envoyasse à César. | But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be kept till I should send him to Caesar. |
| 22 | Alors Agrippa dit à Festus: je voudrais bien aussi entendre cet homme. Demain, dit-il, tu l'entendras. | And Agrippa [said] unto Festus, I also could wish to hear the man myself. To-morrow, saith he, thou shalt hear him. |
| 23 | Le lendemain donc Agrippa et Bérénice étant venus avec une grande pompe, et étant entrés dans l'Auditoire avec les Tribuns et les principaux de la ville, Paul fut amené par le commandement de Festus. | So on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and they were entered into the place of hearing with the chief captains and principal men of the city, at the command of Festus Paul was brought in. |
| 24 | Et Festus dit: Roi Agrippa, et vous tous qui êtes ici avec nous, vous voyez cet homme contre lequel toute la multitude des Juifs m'est venue solliciter, tant à Jérusalem qu'ici, criant qu'il ne le fallait plus laisser vivre. | And Festus saith, King Agrippa, and all men who are here present with us, ye behold this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews made suit to me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying that he ought not to live any longer. |
| 25 | Mais moi, ayant trouvé qu'il n'avait rien fait qui fût digne de mort, et lui-même en ayant appelé à Auguste, j'ai résolu de le lui envoyer. | But I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death: and as he himself appealed to the emperor I determined to send him. |
| 26 | Mais parce que je n'ai rien de certain à en écrire à l'Empereur, je vous l'ai présenté, et principalement à toi, Roi Agrippa, afin qu'après en avoir fait l'examen, j'aie de quoi écrire. | Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I may have somewhat to write. |
| 27 | Car il me semble qu'il n'est pas raisonnable d'envoyer un prisonnier, sans marquer les faits dont on l'accuse. | For it seemeth to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not withal to signify the charges against him. |
