| 1 | And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. | Or, cinq jours après, le grand prêtre Ananie descendit avec quelques Anciens et un avocat, un certain Tertullus; ils portèrent plainte au procurateur contre Paul. |
| 2 | And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence, | Celui-ci ayant été appelé, Tertullus se mit à l'accuser disant : "Que nous jouissions d'une paix profonde, grâce à toi et aux réformes que ta prévoyance a opérées en faveur de cette nation, |
| 3 | We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. | nous le reconnaissons en tout et partout, très excellent Félix, avec une entière reconnaissance. |
| 4 | Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words. | Mais, pour ne pas te retenir davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un instant selon ta bonté. |
| 5 | For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: | Nous avons trouvé cet homme, une peste, qui suscite des troubles pour tous les Juifs qui sont de par le monde entier, et chef de la secte des Nazaréens. |
| 6 | Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. | Il a même tenté de profaner le temple. Aussi bien nous l'avons arrêté. |
| 7 | But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, | |
| 8 | Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. | Tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, apprendre de lui tout ce dont nous l'accusons." |
| 9 | And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so. | Les Juifs aussi vinrent à la rescousse, déclarant que c'était ainsi. |
| 10 | Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself: | Après que le procurateur lui eut fait signe de parler, Paul répondit : "C'est avec confiance que je parle pour me justifier, sachant que tu es juge de cette nation depuis plusieurs années. |
| 11 | Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship. | Il n'y a pas plus de douze jours, tu peux t'en assurer, que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer. |
| 12 | And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: | Et l'on ne m'a pas vu dans le temple converser avec quelqu'un, ni faire un attroupement, pas plus dans les synagogues que dans la ville; |
| 13 | Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. | et ils ne sauraient te prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant. |
| 14 | But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets: | Mais, je te l'avoue, je sers le Dieu de nos pères selon la voie qu'ils appellent une secte, croyant à tout ce qui est selon la Loi et est écrit dans les Prophètes, |
| 15 | And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. | ayant en Dieu cette espérance, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des pécheurs. |
| 16 | And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men. | C'est pourquoi, moi aussi, je m'efforce d'avoir constamment une conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes. |
| 17 | Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. | Or, après plusieurs années, je suis venu pour faire des aumônes à mon peuple et (pour présenter) des oblations. |
| 18 | Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult. | C'est alors qu'ils m'ont trouvé, purifié, dans le temple, sans attroupement ni tumulte. |
| 19 | Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me. | (C'étaient) certains Juifs d'Asie, eux qui auraient dû paraître devant toi et accuser, s'ils avaient quelque chose contre moi. |
| 20 | Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council, | Ou bien que ceux-ci mêmes disent quel crime ils m'ont trouvé, lorsque j'ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin, |
| 21 | Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day. | à moins que ce ne soit pour cette seule parole que j'ai criée, debout au milieu d'eux : "C'est à cause de la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd'hui mis en jugement devant vous." |
| 22 | And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter. | Félix, qui avait une connaissance très exacte de ce qui concernait cette religion, les ajourna, disant : "Quand le tribun Lysias sera descendu, je jugerai votre affaire." |
| 23 | And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him. | Et il donna l'ordre au centurion de garder Paul, en (lui) laissant quelque liberté, et sans empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services. |
| 24 | And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. | Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était juive. Il envoya chercher Paul et l'entendit sur la foi en Jésus-Christ. |
| 25 | And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. | Mais comme il discourait sur la justice, la tempérance et le jugement à venir, Félix effrayé repartit : "Pour le moment, va; je te rappellerai quand j'aurai le temps." |
| 26 | He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. | Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent; aussi l'envoyait-il chercher assez fréquemment pour s'entretenir avec lui. |
| 27 | But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. | Deux ans s'écoulèrent, et Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus; et, dans le désir d'être agréable aux Juifs, Félix laissa Paul en prison. |
