| 1 | Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you. | Et quand ils ouïrent qu'il leur parlait en Langue Hébraïque, ils firent encore plus de silence; et il dit: |
| 2 | (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) | Certes je suis Juif, né à Tarse de Cilicie, mais nourri en cette ville aux pieds de Gamaliel, ayant été exactement instruit dans la Loi de nos pères, et étant zélé pour la Loi de Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui; |
| 3 | I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. | Et j'ai persécuté cette doctrine jusques à la mort, liant et mettant dans les prisons, hommes et femmes; |
| 4 | And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. | Comme le souverain Sacrificateur lui-même, et toute l'assemblée des Anciens m'en sont témoins; desquels aussi ayant reçu des Lettres adressantes aux frères, j'allais à Damas, afin d'amener aussi liés à Jérusalem ceux qui étaient là, pour les faire punir. |
| 5 | As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished. | Or il arriva comme je marchais, et que j'approchais de Damas, environ sur le midi, que tout d'un coup une grande lumière venant du ciel, resplendit comme un éclair autour de moi. |
| 6 | And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. | Et je tombai sur la place; et j'entendis une voix qui me dit: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? |
| 7 | And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? | Et je répondis: qui es-tu, Seigneur? et il me dit: je suis Jésus le Nazarien, que tu persécutes. |
| 8 | And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. | Or ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, et ils en furent tout effrayés, mais ils n'entendirent point la voix de celui qui me parlait. |
| 9 | And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. | Et je dis: Seigneur, que ferai-je? et le Seigneur me dit: lève-toi, et t'en va à Damas, et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire. |
| 10 | And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. | Or parce que je ne voyais rien, à cause de la splendeur de cette lumière, ceux qui étaient avec moi me menèrent par la main, et je vins à Damas. |
| 11 | And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. | Et un homme nommé Ananias, qui craignait Dieu selon la Loi, et qui avait un bon témoignage de tous les Juifs qui demeuraient là, vint me trouver. |
| 12 | And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, | Et étant près de moi, il me dit: Saul mon frère, recouvre la vue: et sur l'heure même je tournai les yeux vers lui, et je le vis. |
| 13 | Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. | Et il me dit: le Dieu de nos pères t'a préordonné pour connaître sa volonté, et pour voir le Juste, et pour ouïr la voix de sa bouche. |
| 14 | And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. | Car tu lui seras témoin envers tous les hommes des choses que tu as vues et ouïes. |
| 15 | For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. | Et maintenant que tardes-tu? lève-toi, et sois baptisé et purifié de tes péchés, en invoquant le Nom du Seigneur. |
| 16 | And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. | Or il arriva qu'après que je fus retourné à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le Temple, je fus ravi en extase; |
| 17 | And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; | Et je vis le Seigneur qui me dit: hâte-toi, et pars en diligence de Jérusalem: car ils ne recevront point le témoignage que tu leur rendras de moi. |
| 18 | And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. | Et je dis: Seigneur! eux-mêmes savent que je mettais en prison, et que je fouettais dans les Synagogues ceux qui croyaient en toi. |
| 19 | And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: | Et lorsque le sang d'Etienne ton martyr fut répandu, j'y étais aussi présent, je consentais à sa mort, et je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le faisaient mourir. |
| 20 | And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. | Mais il me dit: va, car je t'enverrai loin vers les Gentils. |
| 21 | And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. | Et ils l'écoutèrent jusqu'à ce mot; mais alors ils élevèrent leur voix, en disant: ôte de la terre un tel homme, car il n'est point convenable qu'il vive. |
| 22 | And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live. | Et comme ils criaient à haute voix, et secouaient leurs vêtements, et jetaient de la poussière en l'air, |
| 23 | And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air, | le Tribun commanda qu'on le menât dans la forteresse, et il ordonna qu'il fût examiné par le fouet, afin de savoir pour quel sujet ils criaient ainsi contre lui. |
| 24 | The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him. | Et quand ils l'eurent garrotté de courroies, Paul dit au centenier qui était près de lui: vous est-il permis de fouetter un homme Romain, et qui n'est pas même condamné? |
| 25 | And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? | Ce que le centenier ayant entendu, il s'en alla au Tribun pour l'avertir, disant: regarde ce que tu as à faire: car cet homme est Romain. |
| 26 | When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman. | Et le Tribun vint à Paul, et lui dit: dis-moi, es-tu Romain? Et il répondit: oui certainement. |
| 27 | Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea. | Et le Tribun lui dit: J'ai acquis cette bourgeoisie à grand prix d'argent; et Paul dit: mais moi, je l'ai par ma naissance. |
| 28 | And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born. | C'est pourquoi ceux qui le devaient examiner se retirèrent aussitôt d'auprès de lui; et quand le Tribun eut connu qu'il était bourgeois de Rome, il craignit, à cause qu'il l'avait fait lier. |
| 29 | Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. | Et le lendemain voulant savoir au vrai pour quel sujet il était accusé des Juifs, il le fit délier, et ayant commandé que les principaux Sacrificateurs et tout le conseil s'assemblassent, il fit amener Paul, et il le présenta devant eux. |
| 30 | On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them. | Et Paul regardant fixement le Conseil, dit: hommes frères! je me suis conduit en toute bonne conscience devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour. |
