| 1 | Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: | Puis ayant traversé par Amphipolis et par Apollonie, ils vinrent à Thessalonique, où il y avait une Synagogue de Juifs. |
| 2 | And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, | Et Paul selon sa coutume s'y rendit, et durant trois Sabbats il disputait avec eux par les Ecritures; |
| 3 | Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. | Expliquant et prouvant qu'il avait fallu que le Christ souffrît, et qu'il ressuscitât des morts, et que ce Jésus, lequel, disait-il, je vous annonce, était le Christ. |
| 4 | And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. | Et quelques-uns d'entre eux crurent, et se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, et une grande multitude de Grecs qui servaient Dieu, et des femmes de qualité en assez grand nombre. |
| 5 | But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. | Mais les Juifs rebelles étant pleins d'envie, prirent quelques fainéants remplis de malice, qui ayant fait un amas de peuple, firent une émotion dans la ville, et qui ayant forcé la maison de Jason, cherchèrent Paul et Silas pour les amener au peuple. |
| 6 | And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; | Mais ne les ayant point trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les Gouverneurs de la ville, en criant: ceux-ci qui ont remué tout le monde, sont aussi venus ici. |
| 7 | Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. | Et Jason les a retirés chez lui; et ils contreviennent tous aux ordonnances de César, en disant qu'il y a un autre Roi, qu'ils nomment Jésus. |
| 8 | And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. | Ils soulevèrent donc le peuple et les Gouverneurs de la ville, qui entendaient ces choses. |
| 9 | And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go. | Mais après avoir reçu caution de Jason et des autres, ils les laissèrent aller. |
| 10 | And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. | Et d'abord les frères mirent de nuit hors de la ville Paul et Silas, pour aller à Bérée, où étant arrivés ils entrèrent dans la Synagogue des Juifs. |
| 11 | These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. | Or ceux-ci furent plus généreux que les Juifs de Thessalonique, car ils reçurent la parole avec toute promptitude, conférant tous les jours les Ecritures, pour savoir si les choses étaient telles qu'on leur disait. |
| 12 | Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. | Plusieurs donc d'entre eux crurent, et des femmes Grecques de distinction, et des hommes aussi, en assez grand nombre. |
| 13 | But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. | Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que la parole de Dieu était aussi annoncée par Paul à Bérée, ils y vinrent, et émurent le peuple. |
| 14 | And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. | Mais alors les frères firent aussitôt sortir Paul hors de la ville, comme pour aller vers la mer; mais Silas et Timothée demeurèrent encore là. |
| 15 | And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed. | Et ceux qui avaient pris la charge de mettre Paul en sûreté, le menèrent jusqu'à Athènes, et ils en partirent après avoir reçu ordre de Paul de dire à Silas et à Timothée qu'ils le vinssent bientôt rejoindre. |
| 16 | Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. | Et comme Paul les attendait à Athènes, son esprit s'aigrissait en lui-même, en considérant cette ville entièrement adonnée à l'idolâtrie. |
| 17 | Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. | Il disputait donc dans la Synagogue avec les Juifs et avec les dévots, et tous les jours dans la place publique avec ceux qui s'y rencontraient. |
| 18 | Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. | Et quelques-uns d'entre les Philosophes Epicuriens et d'entre les Stoïciens, se mirent à parler avec lui, et les uns disaient: que veut dire ce discoureur? et les autres disaient: il semble être annonciateur de dieux étrangers; parce qu'il leur annonçait Jésus et la résurrection. |
| 19 | And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? | Et l'ayant pris ils le menèrent dans l'Aréopage, et lui dirent: ne pourrons-nous point savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine dont tu parles? |
| 20 | For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. | Car tu nous remplis les oreilles de certaines choses étranges; nous voulons donc savoir ce que veulent dire ces choses. |
| 21 | (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) | Or tous les Athéniens et les étrangers qui demeuraient à Athènes, ne s'occupaient à autre chose qu'à dire ou à ouïr quelque nouvelle. |
| 22 | Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. | Paul étant donc au milieu de l'Aréopage, leur dit: hommes Athéniens! je vous vois comme trop dévots en toutes choses. |
| 23 | For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. | Car en passant et en contemplant vos dévotions, j'ai trouvé même un autel sur lequel était écrit: AU DIEU INCONNU; celui donc que vous honorez sans le connaître, c'est celui que je vous annonce. |
| 24 | God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; | Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et toutes les choses qui y sont, étant le Seigneur du Ciel et de la terre, n'habite point dans des temples faits de main; |
| 25 | Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; | Et il n'est point servi par les mains des hommes, comme s'il avait besoin de quelque chose, vu que c'est lui qui donne à tous la vie, la respiration, et toutes choses; |
| 26 | And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; | Et il a fait d'un seul sang tout le genre humain, pour halbiter sur toute l'étendue de la terre, ayant déterminé les saisons qu'il a établies, et les bornes de leur habitation: |
| 27 | That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: | Afin qu'ils cherchent le Seigneur, pour voir s'ils pourraient en quelque sorte le toucher en tâtonnant, et le trouver; quoiqu'il ne soit pas loin d'un chacun de nous. |
| 28 | For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. | Car par lui nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être; selon ce que quelques-uns même de vos poëtes ont dit; car aussi nous sommes sa race. |
| 29 | Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. | Etant donc la race de Dieu, nous ne devons point estimer que la divinité soit semblable à l'or, ou à l'argent, ou à la pierre taillée par l'art et l'industrie des hommes. |
| 30 | And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: | Mais Dieu passant par-dessus ces temps de l'ignorance, annonce maintenant à tous les hommes en tous lieux qu'ils se repentent. |
| 31 | Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. | Parce qu'il a arrêté un jour auquel il doit juger selon la justice le monde universel, par l'homme qu'il a destiné pour cela; de quoi il a donné une preuve cer- taine à tous, en l'ayant ressuscité d'entre les morts. |
| 32 | And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. | Mais quand ils ouïrent ce mot de la résurrection des morts, les uns s'en moquaient, et les autres disaient: nous t'entendrons encore sur cela. |
| 33 | So Paul departed from among them. | Et Paul sortit ainsi du milieu d'eux. |
| 34 | Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. | Quelques-uns pourtant se joignirent à lui, et crurent; entre lesquels même était Denis l'Aréopagite, et une femme nommée Damaris, et quelques autres avec eux. |
