| 2 | Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. | Les frères de Lystres et d'Iconium rendaient de lui un bon témoignage. |
| 3 | Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. | Paul voulut qu'il partît avec lui, et l'ayant pris, il le circoncit, à cause des Juifs qui étaient dans ces contrées; car tous savaient que son père était grec. |
| 4 | And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. | Dans les villes par où ils passaient, ils transmettaient pour être observées les décisions prises par les apôtres et les Anciens de Jérusalem. |
| 5 | And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily. | Les communautés se fortifiaient donc dans la foi et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour. |
| 6 | Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, | Ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, le Saint-Esprit les ayant empêchés d'annoncer la parole dans l'Asie. |
| 7 | After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. | Parvenus aux confins de la Mysie, ils se disposaient à entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas; |
| 8 | And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. | et ayant passé la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas. |
| 9 | And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. | Pendant la nuit, une vision apparut à Paul : un Macédonien se tenait de bout et lui faisait cette prière : "Passe en Macédoine et viens à notre secours ! " |
| 10 | And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. | Dès qu'il eut vu cette vision, nous cherchâmes aussitôt à partir pour la Macédoine, convaincus que Dieu nous appelait à y annoncer la bonne nouvelle. |
| 11 | Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; | Embarqués à Troas, nous vînmes droit à Samothrace, et le lendemain à Néapolis, |
| 12 | And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. | puis de là à Philippes, qui est première ville de cette partie de la Macédoine (et) une colonie. Nous demeurâmes quelques jours dans cette ville. |
| 13 | And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. | Le jour du sabbat, nous nous rendîmes hors de la porte, sur le bord d'une rivière, où nous pensions qu'était un lieu de prière, et nous étant assis, nous parlâmes aux femmes qui (y) étaient assemblées. |
| 14 | And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. | Or, une femme nomme Lydie, marchande de pourpre de la ville de Thyatire, craignant Dieu, écoutait. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit le coeur pour qu'elle fût attentive à ce que disait Paul. |
| 15 | And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. | Quand elle eut été baptisée, ainsi que sa maison, elle (nous) adressa cette prière : "Puisque vous avez jugé que j'ai foi au Seigneur, entrez et demeurez dans ma maison."Et elle nous (y) contraignit. |
| 16 | And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: | Une fois que nous allions au lieu de prière, vint à notre rencontre une jeune esclave, qui avait un esprit Python et procurait un grand gain à ses maîtres en pratiquant la divination. |
| 17 | The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. | Nous ayant suivis, Paul et nous, elle criait, disant : "Ces hommes sont des serviteurs du Dieu très haut, qui vous annoncent une voie de salut." |
| 18 | And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. | Elle fit cela pendant plusieurs jours. Mais Paul en fut importuné et, se retournant, il dit à l'esprit : "Je te commande, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d'elle."Et il sortit à l'heure même. |
| 19 | And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, | Mais ses maîtres, voyant s'évader l'espoir de leur gain, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, qu'ils traînèrent à l'agora devant le magistrats. |
| 20 | And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, | Et les ayant conduits aux préteurs, ils dirent : "Ces hommes troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs, |
| 21 | And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. | et ils prêchent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis, à nous qui sommes Romains, ni de recevoir ni de suivre." |
| 22 | And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. | Et la foule se souleva contre eux, et les préteurs, ayant fait arracher leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'on les flagellât. |
| 23 | And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: | Après qu'on leur eut appliqué force coups, ils les jetèrent en prison, en commandant au geôlier de les tenir en garde sûre. |
| 24 | Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. | Lui, ayant reçu pareil commandement, les jeta dans le cachot intérieur et leur entrava les pieds dans les ceps. |
| 25 | And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. | Or, vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas, étant en prière, chantaient des hymnes à Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient. |
| 26 | And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. | Tout à coup il y eut un tremblement de terre si fort que les fondements de la prison furent ébranlés; au même instant, toutes les portes s'ouvrirent et les liens de tous (les prisonniers) tombèrent. |
| 27 | And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. | Le geôlier, s'étant éveillé et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, tira (son) épée, et il allait se tuer, pensant que les prisonniers avaient pris la fuite. |
| 28 | But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. | Mais Paul cria à pleine voix : "Ne te fais point de mal, car nous sommes tous ici." |
| 29 | Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, | (Le geôlier), ayant demandé des torches, se précipita et, pris de tremblement, tomba aux pieds de Paul et de Silas; |
| 30 | And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? | puis il les mena dehors et dit : "Seigneur, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé ?" |
| 31 | And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. | Et ils dirent : "Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison." |
| 32 | And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. | Et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa demeure. |
| 33 | And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. | Les prenant à cette même heure de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies, et aussitôt il fut baptisé, lui et tous les siens. |
| 34 | And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. | Ensuite il les fit monter dans sa maison et (leur) servit à manger, et il se réjouit en famille d'avoir cru en Dieu. |
| 35 | And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. | Cependant, quand il fit jour, les préteurs envoyèrent les licteurs dire : Mets ces hommes en liberté. |
| 36 | And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. | Le geôlier rapporta les paroles à Paul : "Les préteurs ont envoyé (l'ordre) de vous relâcher; sortez donc maintenant et allez en paix." |
| 37 | But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. | Mais Paul dit (aux licteurs) : "Après nous avoir fait battre publiquement, sans condamnation, nous qui sommes Romains, on nous a jetés en prison, et maintenant on nous jette dehors secrètement ! Non point ! Mais qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous faire sortir ! " |
| 38 | And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. | Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, qui furent effrayés en apprenant que c'étaient des Romains. |
| 39 | And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. | Ils vinrent les prier; et, après (les) avoir fait sortir, ils (leur) demandaient de quitter la ville. |
| 40 | And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed. | Au sortir de la prison, (Paul et Silas) entrèrent chez Lydie, et après avoir vu et exhorté les frères, ils partirent. |
