| 2 | Homme dévot et craignant Dieu, avec toute sa famille, faisant aussi beaucoup d'aumônes au peuple, et priant Dieu continuellement; | a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always. |
| 3 | Lequel vit clairement en vision environ sur les neuf heures du jour, un Ange de Dieu qui vint à lui, et qui lui dit: Corneille! | He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius. |
| 4 | Et Corneille ayant les yeux arrêtés sur lui, et étant tout effrayé, lui dit: qu'y a-t-il, Seigneur? Et il lui dit: tes prières et tes aumônes sont montées en mémoire devant Dieu. | And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God. |
| 5 | Maintenant donc envoie des gens à Joppe, et fais venir Simon, qui est surnommé Pierre. | And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter: |
| 6 | Il est logé chez un certain Simon corroyeur, qui a sa maison près de la mer; c'est lui qui te dira ce qu'il faut que tu fasses. | he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side. |
| 7 | Et quand l'Ange qui parlait à Corneille s'en fut allé, il appela deux de ses serviteurs, et un soldat craignant Dieu, d'entre ceux qui se tenaient autour de lui. | And when the angel that spake unto him was departed, he called two of his household-servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; |
| 8 | Auxquels ayant tout raconté, il les envoya à Joppe. | and having rehearsed all things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. |
| 9 | Or le lendemain comme ils marchaient, et qu'ils approchaient de la ville, Pierre monta sur la maison pour prier, environ vers les six heures. | Now on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour: |
| 10 | Et il arriva qu'ayant faim, il voulut prendre son repas; et comme ceux de la maison lui apprêtaient à manger, il lui survint un ravissement d'esprit; | and he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance; |
| 11 | Et il vit le ciel ouvert, et un vaisseau descendant sur lui comme un grand linceul, lié par les quatre bouts, et descendant en terre; | and he beholdeth the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth: |
| 12 | Dans lequel il y avait de toutes sortes d'animaux terrestres à quatre pieds, des bêtes sauvages, des reptiles, et des oiseaux du ciel. | wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven. |
| 13 | Et une voix lui fut adressée, disant: Pierre, lève-toi, tue, et mange. | And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat. |
| 14 | Mais Pierre répondit: je n'ai garde, Seigneur! car jamais je n'ai mangé aucune chose immonde ou souillée. | But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean. |
| 15 | Et la voix lui dit encore pour la seconde fois: les choses que Dieu a purifiées, ne les tiens point pour souillées. | And a voice [came] unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common. |
| 16 | Et cela arriva jusques à trois fois, et puis le vaisseau se retira au ciel. | And this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven. |
| 17 | Or comme Pierre était en peine en lui-même, pour savoir quel était le sens de cette vision qu'il avait vue, alors voici, les hommes envoyés par Corneille s'enquérant de la maison de Simon, arrivèrent à la porte. | Now while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon`s house, stood before the gate, |
| 18 | Et ayant appelé quelqu'un, ils demandèrent si Simon, qui était surnommé Pierre, était logé là. | and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there. |
| 19 | Et comme Pierre pensait à la vision, l'Esprit lui dit: voilà trois hommes qui te demandent. | And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. |
| 20 | Lève-toi donc, et descends, et t'en va avec eux, sans en faire difficulté: car c'est moi qui les ai envoyés. | But arise, and get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them. |
| 21 | Pierre donc, étant descendu vers les gens qui lui avaient été envoyés par Corneille leur dit: voici, je suis celui que vous cherchez; quelle est la cause pour laquelle vous êtes venus? | And Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? |
| 22 | Et ils dirent: Corneille Centenier, homme juste et craignant Dieu, et ayant un bon témoignage de toute la nation des Juifs, a été averti de Dieu par un saint Ange de t'envoyer quérir pour venir en sa maison, et t'ouïr parler. | And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned [of God] by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee. |
| 23 | Alors Pierre les ayant fait entrer, les logea; et le lendemain il s'en alla avec eux, et quelques-uns des frères de Joppe lui tinrent compagnie. | So he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him. |
| 24 | Et le lendemain ils entrèrent à Césarée. Or Corneille les attendait, ayant appelé ses parents et ses familiers amis. | And on the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends. |
| 25 | Et il arriva que comme Pierre entrait, Corneille venant au-devant de lui, et se jetant à ses pieds, l'adora. | And when it came to pass that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. |
| 26 | Mais Pierre le releva, en lui disant: lève-toi, je suis aussi un homme. | But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. |
| 27 | Puis en parlant avec lui, il entra, et trouva plusieurs personnes qui étaient là assemblées. | And as he talked with him, he went in, and findeth many come together: |
| 28 | Et il leur dit: vous savez comme il n'est pas permis à un homme Juif de se lier avec un étranger, ou d'aller chez lui, mais Dieu m'a montré que je ne devais estimer aucun homme être impur ou souillé. | and he said unto them, Ye yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come unto one of another nation; and [yet] unto me hath God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean: |
| 29 | C'est pourquoi dès que vous m'avez envoyé quérir, je suis venu sans en faire difficulté. Je vous demande donc pour quel sujet vous m'avez envoyé quérir. | wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me. |
| 30 | Et Corneille lui dit: il y a quatre jours à cette heure-ci, que j'étais en jeûne, et que je faisais la prière à neuf heures dans ma maison; et voici, un homme se présenta devant moi en un vêtement éclatant. | And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, |
| 31 | Et il me dit: Corneille, ta prière est exaucée, et Dieu s'est souvenu de tes aumônes. | and saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. |
| 32 | Envoie donc à Joppe, et fais venir de là Simon, surnommé Pierre, qui est logé dans la maison de Simon corroyeur, près de la mer, lequel étant venu, te parlera. | Send therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side. |
| 33 | C'est pourquoi j'ai d'abord envoyé vers toi, et tu as bien fait de venir. Or maintenant nous sommes tous présents devant Dieu pour entendre tout ce que Dieu t'a commandé de nous dire. | Forthwith therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee of the Lord. |
| 34 | Alors Pierre prenant la parole, dit: en vérité je reconnais que DIeu n'a point d'égard à l'apparence des personnes; | And Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: |
| 35 | Mais qu'en toute nation celui qui le craint, et qui s'adonne à la justice, lui est agréable. | but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him. |
| 36 | c'est ce qu'il a envoyé signifier aux enfants d'Israël, en annonçant la paix par Jésus-Christ, qui est le Seigneur de tous. | The word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all.) -- |
| 37 | Vous savez ce qui est arrivé dans toute la Judée en commençant par la Galilée, après le Baptême que Jean a prêché; | that saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; |
| 38 | Savoir, comment Dieu a oint du Saint-Esprit et de force Jésus le Nazarien, qui a passé de lieu en lieu, en faisant du bien, et guérissant tous ceux qui étaient sous le pouvoir du démon: car Dieu était avec Jésus. | [even] Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. |
| 39 | Et nous sommes témoins de toutes les choses qu'il a faites, tant au pays des Juifs, qu'à Jérusalem; et comment ils l'ont fait mourir le pendant au bois. | And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree. |
| 40 | Mais Dieu l'a ressuscité le troisième jour, et l'a donné pour être manifesté; | Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest, |
| 41 | Non à tout le peuple, mais aux témoins auparavant ordonnés de Dieu, à nous, dis-je, qui avons mangé et bu avec lui après qu'il a été ressuscité des morts. | not to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, [even] to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. |
| 42 | Et il nous a commandé de prêcher au peuple, et de témoigner que c'est lui qui est destiné de Dieu pour être le Juge des vivants et des morts. | And he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God [to be] the Judge of the living and the dead. |
| 43 | Tous les Prophètes lui rendent témoignage, que quiconque croira en lui, recevra la rémission de ses péchés par son Nom. | To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins. |
| 44 | Comme Pierre tenait encore ce discours, le Saint-Esprit descendit sur tous ceux qui écoutaient la parole. | While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. |
| 45 | Mais les Fidèles de la Circoncision qui étaient venus avec Pierre, s'étonnèrent de ce que le don du Saint-Esprit était aussi répandu sur les Gentils. | And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
| 46 | Car ils les entendaient parler diverses Langues, et glorifier Dieu. | For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, |
| 47 | Alors Pierre prenant la parole, dit: qu'est-ce qui pourrait s'opposer à ce que ceux-ci, qui ont reçu comme nous le Saint-Esprit, ne soient baptisés d'eau. | Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? |
| 48 | Il commanda donc qu'ils fussent baptisés au Nom du Seigneur. Alors ils le prièrent de demeurer là quelques jours. | And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. |
