| 2 | Le Roi donc dit à Joab, chef de l'armée, lequel il avait avec soi: Passe maintenant par toutes les Tribus d'Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beersébah, et dénombre le peuple, afin que j'en sache le nombre. | And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people. |
| 3 | Mais Joab répondit au Roi: Que l'Eternel ton Dieu veuille augmenter ton peuple autant, et cent fois autant qu'il est maintenant; et que les yeux du Roi mon Seigneur le voient! mais pourquoi le Roi mon Seigneur prend-il plaisir à cela? | And Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? |
| 4 | Néanmoins la parole du Roi l'emporta sur Joab, et sur les Chefs de l'armée; et Joab et les chefs de l'armée sortirent de la présence du Roi pour dénombrer le peuple, savoir Israël. | Notwithstanding, the king`s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. |
| 5 | Ils passèrent donc le Jourdain, et se campèrent en Haroher, à main droite de la ville, qui est au milieu du torrent de Gad, et vers Jahzer. | And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer: |
| 6 | Et ils vinrent en Galaad, et dans la terre de ceux qui habitent au bas pays d'Hodsi, et vinrent à Dan-Jahan, et ensuite aux environs de Sidon. | then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon, |
| 7 | Et ils vinrent jusqu'à la forteresse de Tsor, et dans toutes les villes des Héviens, et des Cananéens, et sortirent vers le Midi de Juda à Beersébah. | and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba. |
| 8 | Ainsi ils traversèrent tout le pays, et revinrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours. | So when they had gone to and from through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. |
| 9 | Et Joab donna au Roi le rolle du dénombrement du peuple; et il y eut de ceux d'Israël huit cent mille hommes de guerre tirant l'épée, et de ceux de Juda cinq cent mille hommes. | And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men. |
| 10 | Alors David fut touché en son coeur, après qu'il eut fait ainsi dénombrer le peuple; et David dit à l'Eternel: J'ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela, mais, je te prie, ô Eternel! pardonne l'iniquité de ton serviteur; car j'ai agi très-follement. | And David`s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. |
| 11 | Après cela David se leva dès le matin, et la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Gad le Prophète, qui était le Voyant de David, en disant: | And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David`s seer, saying, |
| 12 | Va, et dis à David: Ainsi a dit l'Eternel: J'apporte trois choses contre toi; choisis l'une des trois, afin que je te la fasse. | Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. |
| 13 | Gad vint donc vers David, et lui fit entendre cela en disant: Que veux-tu qui t'arrive: ou sept ans de famine sur ton pays; ou que durant trois mois tu fuies devant tes ennemis, et qu'ils te poursuivent; ou que durant trois jours la mortalité soit en ton pays? Avises-y maintenant, et regarde ce que tu veux que je réponde à celui qui m'a envoyé. | So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days` pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me. |
| 14 | Et David répondit à Gad: Je suis dans une très-grande angoisse. Je te prie que nous tombions entre les mains de l'Eternel, car ses compassions sont en grand nombre; et que je ne tombe point entre les mains des hommes. | And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man. |
| 15 | L'Eternel donc envoya la mortalité en Israël, depuis le matin jusqu'au temps de l'assignation; et il mourut du peuple depuis Dan jusqu'à Beersébah, soixante-dix mille hommes. | So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. |
| 16 | Mais quand l'Ange eut étendu sa main sur Jérusalem pour la ravager, l'Eternel se repentit de ce mal-là et dit à l'Ange qui faisait le dégât parmi le peuple: C'est assez, retire à cette heure ta main. Or l'Ange de l'Eternel était auprès de l'aire d'Arauna Jébusien. | And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. |
| 17 | Car David voyant l'Ange qui frappait le peuple, parla à l'Eternel, et dit: Voici, c'est moi qui ai péché, c'est moi qui ai commis l'iniquité, mais ces brebis qu'ont-elles fait? Je te prie que ta main soit contre moi, et contre la maison de mon père. | And David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father`s house. |
| 18 | Et en ce jour-là Gad vint vers David, et lui dit: Monte, et dresse un autel à l'Eternel dans l'aire d'Arauna Jébusien. | And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. |
| 19 | Et David monta selon la parole de Gad, ainsi que l'Eternel l'avait commandé. | And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded. |
| 20 | Et Arauna regarda, et vit le Roi, et ses serviteurs qui venaient vers lui; et ainsi Arauna sortit, et se prosterna devant le Roi, le visage contre terre. | And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. |
| 21 | Et Arauna dit: Pour quel sujet le Roi mon Seigneur vient-il vers son serviteur? Et David répondit: Pour acheter ton aire, et y bâtir un autel à l'Eternel, afin que cette plaie soit arrêtée de dessus le peuple. | And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people. |
| 22 | Et Arauna dit à David: Que le Roi mon Seigneur prenne et offre ce qu'il lui plaira. Voilà des boeufs pour l'holocauste, et des chariots, et un attelage de boeufs au lieu de bois. | And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood: |
| 23 | Arauna donna tout cela au Roi comme un Roi. Et Arauna dit au Roi: L'Eternel ton Dieu veuille t'avoir pour agréable! | all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee. |
| 24 | Et le Roi répondit à Arauna: Non, mais je l'achèterai de toi pour un certain prix, et je n'offrirai point à l'Eternel mon Dieu des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien. Ainsi David acheta l'aire, et il acheta aussi les boeufs cinquante sicles d'argent. | And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. |
| 25 | Puis David bâtit là un autel à l'Eternel, et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérités; et l'Eternel fut apaisé envers le pays, et la plaie fut arrêtée en Israël. | And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel. |
