| 5 | Et David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad pour leur dire : « Soyez bénis de Yahweh, de ce que vous avez rempli ce pieux devoir envers Saül, votre seigneur, et l'avez enterré. | And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. |
| 6 | Et maintenant, que Yahweh use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité! Moi aussi, je vous rendrai ce bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte. | And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. |
| 7 | Et, maintenant, que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre seigneur Saül est mort, et c'est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour être son roi. » | Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them. |
| 8 | Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l'armée de Saül, prit Isboseth, fils de Saül, et, l'ayant fait passer à Mahanaïm, | Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul`s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; |
| 9 | il l'établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Assurites, sur Jezraël, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël. | and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. |
| 10 | Isboseth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans lorsqu'il régna sur Israël, et il régna deux ans. Seule, la maison de Juda restait attachée à David. | Ish-bosheth, Saul`s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. |
| 11 | Le temps pendant lequel David régna, à Hébron, sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois. | And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. |
| 12 | Abner, fils de Ner, et les serviteurs d'Isboseth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon. | And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. |
| 13 | Joab, fils de Sarvia, et les serviteurs de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l'étang de Gabaon, et ils l'établirent, les uns d'un côté de l'étang, les autres de l'autre côté de l'étang. | And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. |
| 14 | Abner dit à Joab : « Que les jeunes gens se lèvent et qu'ils joutent devant nous! » Joab répondit : « Qu'ils se lèvent! » | And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. |
| 15 | Ils se levèrent et s'avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isboseth, fils de Saül, et douze des serviteurs de David. | Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. |
| 16 | Chacun, saisissant son adversaire par la tête, enfonça son épée dans le flanc de son compagnon, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l'on donna à ce lieu le nom de Chelqath Hatsourim; il est en Gabaon. | And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow`s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. |
| 17 | Et le combat devint très rude en ce jour-là, et Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent défaits par les serviteurs de David. | And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David. |
| 18 | Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Sarvia : Joab, Abisaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une des gazelles qui sont dans les champs; | And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. |
| 19 | Asaël poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de derrière Abner, pour aller à droite ou à gauche. | And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. |
| 20 | Abner, se tourna derrière lui et dit : « Est-ce toi, Asaël ? » Et il répondit : « C'est moi. » | Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I. |
| 21 | Abner lui dit : « Ecarte-toi à droite ou à gauche; saisis l'un des jeunes gens et prends sa dépouille. » Mais Asaël ne voulut pas se détourner de lui. | And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. |
| 22 | Abner dit encore à Asaël : « Détourne-toi de derrière moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t'étendrais-je par terre ? Comment pourrais-je ensuite lever mon visage devant Joab, ton frère! » | And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? |
| 23 | Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Alors Abner le frappa au ventre avec l'extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba là, et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé et était mort, s'y arrêtaient. | Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still. |
| 24 | Joab et Abisaï poursuivirent Abner; au coucher du soleil, ils arrivèrent à la colline d'Ammah, qui est à l'est de Giach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon. | But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. |
| 25 | Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d'Abner et, réunis en un seul corps d'armée, ils s'arrêtèrent au sommet d'une colline. | And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. |
| 26 | Abner appela Joab et dit : « L'épée dévorera-t-elle toujours ? Ne sais-tu pas qu'il y aura de l'amertume à la fin ? Jusques à quand attendras-tu à dire au peuple de cesser de poursuivre ses frères ? » | Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? |
| 27 | Joab répondit : « Aussi vrai que Dieu est vivant! Si tu n'avais pas parlé, le peuple n'aurait pas cessé avant demain matin de poursuivre chacun son frère. » | And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother. |
| 28 | Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s'arrêta : ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre. | So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. |
| 29 | Abner et ses gens, après avoir marché toute la nuit dans la Plaine, passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent tout le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm. | And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim. |
| 30 | Joab aussi cessa de poursuivre Abner et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des serviteurs de David, et Asaël. | And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David`s servants nineteen men and Asahel. |
| 31 | Et les serviteurs de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes de Benjamin et des hommes d'Abner. | But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner`s men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died. |
| 32 | Ils emportèrent Asaël et l'enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père, qui est à Bethléem. Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit, et ils arrivèrent à Hébron au point du jour. | And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron. |
