| 1 | Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; | Dopo la morte di Saul Davide tornò dalla strage degli Amalekiti e si fermò due giorni a Tsiklag. |
| 2 | It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. | Al terzo giorno, ecco arrivare dall'accampamento di Saul un uomo con le vesti stracciate e col capo cosparso di terra. Appena giunto vicino a Davide cadde a terra e si prostrò. |
| 3 | And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. | Davide gli chiese: Da dove vieni?. L'altro gli rispose: Sono fuggito dall'accampamento d'Israele. |
| 4 | And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also. | Davide gli disse: Come sono andate le cose? Ti prego, raccontami. Egli rispose: Il popolo è fuggito dal campo di battaglia e molti uomini sono caduti e sono morti; anche Saul e suo figlio Gionathan sono morti. |
| 5 | And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead? | Allora Davide domandò al giovane che gli riferiva dell'accaduto: Come sai che Saul e suo figlio Gionathan sono morti?. |
| 6 | And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. | Il giovane che gli riferiva dell'accaduto disse: Mi trovavo per caso sul monte Ghilboa, quando vidi Saul appoggiato alla sua lancia, mentre i carri e i cavalieri lo inseguivano da vicino. |

| 9 | He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me. | Allora egli mi disse: Avvicinati a me e uccidimi, perché una grande angoscia si è impadronita di me, ma la vita è ancora tutta in me. |
| 10 | So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord. | Così mi avvicinai a lui e lo uccisi perché capivo che non avrebbe potuto vivere dopo la sua caduta. | 11 | Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him: | Allora Davide afferrò le proprie vesti e le stracciò, e lo stesso fecero tutti gli uomini che erano con lui. |
| 12 | And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. | Così fecero cordoglio, piansero e digiunarono fino a sera, per Saul, per Gionathan suo figlio, per il popolo dell'Eterno e per la casa d'Israele, perché erano caduti per la spada. |
| 13 | And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite. | Poi Davide chiese al giovane che gli aveva riferito dell'accaduto: Di dove sei?. Egli rispose: Sono figlio di uno straniero, di un Amalekita. |
| 14 | And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD's anointed? | Allora Davide gli disse: Come mai non hai avuto timore di stendere la mano per uccidere l'unto dell'Eterno?. |
| 15 | And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. | Poi chiamò uno dei suoi uomini e gli disse: Avvicinati e gettati su di lui!. Egli lo colpì e quel tale morì. |
| 16 | And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD's anointed. | Davide quindi gli disse: Il tuo sangue ricada sul tuo capo perché la tua stessa bocca ha testimoniato contro di te, dicendo: "Io ho ucciso l'unto dell'Eterno". |
| 17 | And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: | Allora Davide intonò questo lamento su Saul e su Gionathan, suo figlio, |

| 21 | Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. | O monti di Ghilboa, non vi sia più né rugiada né pioggia su di voi, né campi di offerte; perché là fu gettato via lo scudo dei prodi, lo scudo di Saul, non più unto con olio. |

| 26 | I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. | Io sono in angoscia per te, fratello mio Gionathan; tu mi eri molto caro, il tuo amore per me era meraviglioso più dell'amore delle donne. |
| 27 | How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished! | Come mai sono caduti i prodi, e sono perite le armi di guerra?. |
