| 1 | It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. | Après cela, les fils de Moab et les fils d'Ammon, et avec eux des Ammonites, vinrent contre Josaphat pour lui faire la guerre. |
| 2 | Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi. | Des messagers vinrent en informer Josaphat en disant : "Une multitude nombreuse marche contre toi d'au cela de la mer Morte, de la Syrie, et voici qu'ils sont à Asason-Thamar, qui est Engaddi". |
| 3 | And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. | Effrayé, Josaphat se détermina à recourir à Yahweh, et il publia un jeûne pour tout Juda. |
| 4 | And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. | Juda s'assembla pour invoquer Yahweh ; même l'un vint de toutes les villes de Juda pour invoquer Yahweh. |
| 5 | And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, | Josaphat se tint au milieu de l'assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem, dans la maison de Yahweh, devant le nouveau parvis, |
| 6 | And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? | et il dit : "Yahweh, Dieu de nos pères, n'êtes-vous pas Dieu dans le ciel, et ne dominez-vous pas sur tous les royaumes des nations, et n'avez-vous pas en main la force et la puissance, sans que l'on puisse vous résister ? |
| 7 | Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? | N'est-ce pas vous, ô notre Dieu, qui avez chassé les habitants de ce pays devant votre peuple d'Israël, et qui l'avez donné pour toujours à la postérité d'Abraham, votre ami. |
| 8 | And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, | Ils y ont habité et ils y ont bâti pour voix un sanctuaire à votre nom, en disant : |
| 9 | If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. | S'il nous survient une calamité, l'épée du jugement, la peste ou la famine, nous nous tiendrons devant cette maison et devant toi, car ton nom est sur cette maison, nous crierons vers vous du milieu de notre angoisse, et vous écouterez et vous sauverez! |
| 10 | And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; | Maintenant, voici les fils d'Ammon et de Moab, et ceux de la montagne de Séïr, chez lesquels vous n'avez pas permis à Israël d'entrer quand il venait du pays d'Égypte, mais dont il s'est détourné sans les détruire; |
| 11 | Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. | les voici qui nous récompensent en venant nous chasser de votre héritage, dont vous nous avez donné la possession! |
| 12 | O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. | Ô notre Dieu, ne rendrez-vous pas un jugement contre eux ? Car nous sommes sans force devant cette nombreuse multitude qui s'avance contre nous, et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont tournés vers vous." |
| 13 | And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. | Et tout Juda se tenait debout devant Yahweh, avec leurs petits enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils. |
| 14 | Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; | Alors, au milieu de l'assemblée, l'esprit de Yahweh fut sur Jahaziel, fils de Zacharias, fils de Banaïas, fils de Jéhiel, fils de Mathanias, lévite, d'entre les fils d'Asaph. |
| 15 | And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. | Et Jahaziel dit : "Soyez attentifs, tout Juda et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat ! Ainsi vous dit Yahweh : Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point devant cette nombreuse multitude, car ce n'est pas vous que concerne la guerre, mais Dieu. |
| 16 | To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. | Demain descendez contre eux; voici qu'ils monteront par la colline de Sis, et vous les trouverez à l'extrémité de la vallée, en face du désert de Jéruel. |
| 17 | Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. | Vous n'aurez pas à combattre en cette affaire : présentez-vous ; tenez-vous là, et vous verrez la délivrance que Yahweh vous accordera, ô Juda et Jérusalem : Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point ; demain, sortez à leur rencontre, et Yahweh sera avec vous." |
| 18 | And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. | Josaphat s'inclina le visage contre terre, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem tombèrent devant Yahweh pour adorer Yahweh. |
| 19 | And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. | Les lévites d'entre les fils de Caath et d'entre les fils de Coré, se levèrent pour célébrer Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, d'une voix forte et élevée. |
| 20 | And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. | Le lendemain, s'étant levés de bon matin, ils se mirent en marche vers le désert de Thécué. Comme ils partaient, Josaphat se tint debout et dit : "Ecoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem ! Confiez-vous dans Yahweh, votre Dieu, et vous serez inébranlables; confiez-vous en ses prophètes, et vous aurez du succès." |
| 21 | And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. | Ensuite, après avoir délibéré avec le peuple, il établit des chantres qui devaient, revêtus d'ornements sacrés et marchant devant l'armée, célébrer Yahweh, en disant : "Louez Yahweh, car sa miséricorde demeure à jamais !" |
| 22 | And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. | Au moment où l'on commençait les chants et les louanges, Yahweh dressa des pièges contre les fils d'Ammon et de Moab et contre ceux de la montagne de Séïr, qui étaient venus vers Juda, et ils furent battus. |
| 23 | For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. | Les fils d'Ammon et de Moab se tinrent contre les habitants de la montagne de Séïr pour les massacrer et les exterminer et, quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séïr, ils s'aidèrent les uns les autres à se détruire. |
| 24 | And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. | Lorsque Juda fut arrivé sur le poste de guet du désert, ils se tournèrent vers la multitude, et ne virent que des cadavres étendus par terre, sans que personne eût échappé. |
| 25 | And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. | Josaphat et son peuple allèrent piller leurs dépouilles, et ils y trouvèrent d'abondantes richesses, des cadavres et des objets précieux, et ils en enlevèrent pour eux jusqu'à ne pouvoir les porter; ils mirent trois jours à piller le butin, car il était considérable. |
| 26 | And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day. | Le quatrième jour, ils s'assemblèrent dans la vallée de Beraca; car ils y bénirent Yahweh, et c'est pourquoi ils appelèrent ce lieu vallée de Beraca, qui est son nom jusqu'à ce jour. |
| 27 | Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies. | Tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, ayant Josaphat à leur tête, se mirent joyeusement en route pour retourner à Jérusalem, car Yahweh les avait remplis de joie en les délivrant de leurs ennemis. |
| 28 | And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. | Ils entrèrent à Jérusalem au son des cithares, des harpes et des trompettes, vers la maison de Yahweh. |
| 29 | And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. | La terreur de Yahweh s'empara de tous les royaumes des pays, lorsqu'ils apprirent que Yahweh avait combattu contre les ennemis d'Israël. |
| 30 | So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about. | Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et son Dieu lui donna du repos de tous côtés. |
| 31 | And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. | Josaphat devint roi de Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Azuba, fille de Selahi. |
| 32 | And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. | Il marcha dans la voie d'Asa, son père, et ne s'en défourna point, faisant ce qui est droit aux yeux de Yahweh. |
| 33 | Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers. | Seulement les hauts lieux ne disparurent point, et le peuple n'avait pas encore fermement attaché son coeur au Dieu de ses pères. |
| 34 | Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel. | Le reste des actes de Josaphat, les premiers et les derniers, voici qu'ils sont écrits dans les Paroles de Jéhu, fils de Hanani lesquelles sont insérées dans le livre des rois d'Israël. |
| 35 | And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: | Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s'associa avec Ochosias, roi d'Israël, dont la conduite était criminelle. |
| 36 | And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongaber. | Il s'associa avec lui pour construire des vaisseaux destinés à aller à Tharsis, et ils construisirent les vaisseaux à Asiongaber. |
| 37 | Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish. | Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodau, de Marésa, prophétisa contre Josaphat, en disant : "Parce que tu t'es associé avec Ochozias, Yahweh a détruit ton oeuvre."Et les vaisseaux furent brisés, et ils ne purent aller à Tharsis. |
