| 5 | Ought ye not to know that Jehovah, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? | Non sapete forse che l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, ha dato per sempre a Davide il regno sopra Israele, a lui e ai suoi figli, con un patto di sale? |
| 6 | Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord. | Eppure Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, servo di Salomone, figlio di Davide, si è levato e si è ribellato, contro il suo signore. |
| 7 | And there were gathered unto him worthless men, base fellows, that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender-hearted, and could not withstand them. | Attorno a lui si sono radunati uomini spregevoli, dei farabutti, che si sono fatti forti contro Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, quando Roboamo era giovane e inesperto, e non era forte abbastanza da resistere loro. |
| 8 | And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and there are with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods. | Ora voi pensate di riuscire a resistere al regno dell'Eterno, che è nelle mani dei figli di Davide, perché siete una grande moltitudine e avete con voi i vitelli d'oro che Geroboamo ha fatto per voi come vostri dèi. |
| 9 | Have ye not driven out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made you priests after the manner of the peoples of [other] lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of [them that are] no gods. | Non avete voi forse scacciato i sacerdoti dell'Eterno, i figli di Aaronne, e i Leviti e non vi siete costituiti sacerdoti come i popoli degli altri paesi? Così chiunque viene con un giovane torello e con sette montoni per essere consacrato, può divenire sacerdoti di quelli che non sono dèi. |
| 10 | But as for us, Jehovah is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and [we have] priests ministering unto Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work: | Quanto a noi, l'Eterno è nostro DIO, e non l'abbiamo abbandonato; i sacerdoti che prestano servizio dell'Eterno, sono figli di Aaronne mentre i Leviti svolgono le loro mansioni. |
| 11 | and they burn unto Jehovah every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense: the showbread also [set they] in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of Jehovah our God; but ye have forsaken him. | Ogni mattina e ogni sera essi offrono all'Eterno gli olocausti e l'incenso odoroso; inoltre essi dispongono i pani della presentazione sulla tavola pura, e ogni sera accendono il candelabro d'oro con le sue lampade, perché noi osserviamo il comando dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO; ma voi l'avete abbandonato. |
| 12 | And, behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against Jehovah, the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper. | Ed ecco, DIO stesso è con noi alla nostra testa e i sacerdoti con trombe squillanti stanno per suonare l'allarme contro di voi. O figli d'Israele, non combattete contro l'Eterno il DIO dei vostri padri, perché non avrete successo. |
| 13 | But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them. | Intanto Geroboamo li aggirò con un'imboscata per assalirli alle spalle; così, mentre egli era schierato davanti a Giuda, quelli dell'imboscata erano alle spalle. |
| 14 | And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried unto Jehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. | Quando quelli di Giuda si voltarono, si accorsero che li aspettava la battaglia tanto di fronte che alle spalle. Allora essi gridarono all'Eterno e i sacerdoti suonarono le trombe. |
| 15 | Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. | Poi gli uomini di Giuda lanciarono un grido e, mentre gli uomini di Giuda gridavano, avvenne che DIO colpì Geroboamo e tutto Israele davanti ad Abijah e a Giuda. |
| 16 | And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand. | Così i figli d'Israele fuggirono davanti a Giuda, e DIO li diede nelle loro mani. |
| 17 | And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. | Abijah e la sua gente inflissero loro una grande sconfitta; fra gli Israeliti caddero morti cinquecentomila uomini scelti. |
| 18 | Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon Jehovah, the God of their fathers. | Così in quel tempo i figli d'Israele furono umiliati, mentre i figli di Giuda si rafforzarono perché si erano appoggiati sull'Eterno, il DIO dei loro padri. |
| 19 | And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephron with the towns thereof. | Abijah inseguì Geroboamo e gli tolse le seguenti città: Bethel, con i suoi villaggi satelliti, Jeshanah con i suoi villaggi satelliti, Efraim con i suoi villaggi satelliti. |
| 20 | Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and Jehovah smote him, and he died. | Così durante la vita di Abijah, Geroboamo non riprese più forza, poi l'Eterno lo colpì ed egli morì. |
| 21 | But Abijah waxed mighty, and took unto himself fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters. | Abijah invece divenne potente, prese quattordici mogli e generò ventidue figli e sedici figlie. |
| 22 | And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo. | Il resto delle gesta di Abijah, la sua condotta e le sue parole sono descritte negli annali del profeta Iddo. |
