| 1 | This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. | Cette parole est certaine, qui si quelqu'un désire d'être Evêque, il désire une oeuvre excellente. |
| 2 | A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; | Mais il faut que l'Evêque soit irrépréhensible, mari d'une seule femme, vigilant, modéré, honorable, hospitalier, propre à enseigner; |
| 3 | Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; | Non sujet au vin, non batteur, non convoiteux d'un gain déshonnête, mais doux, non querelleur, non avare. |
| 4 | One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; | Conduisant honnêtement sa propre maison, tenant ses enfants soumis en toute pureté de moeurs. |
| 5 | (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) | Car si quelqu'un ne sait pas conduire sa propre maison, comment pourra-t-il gouverner l'Eglise de Dieu? |
| 6 | Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. | Qu'il ne soit point nouvellement converti; de peur qu'étant enflé d'orgueil, il ne tombe dans la condamnation du calomniateur. |
| 7 | Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. | Il faut aussi qu'il ait un bon témoignage de ceux de dehors, qu'il ne tombe point dans des fautes qui puissent lui être reprochées, et dans le piége du Démon. |
| 8 | Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; | Que les Diacres aussi soient graves, non doubles en parole, non sujets à beaucoup de vin, non convoiteux d'un gain déshonnête. |
| 9 | Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. | Retenant le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure. |
| 10 | And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. | Que ceux-ci aussi soient premièrement éprouvés, et qu'ensuite ils servent, après avoir été trouvés sans reproche. |
| 11 | Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. | De même, que leurs femmes soient honnêtes, non médisantes, sobres, fidèles en toutes choses. |
| 12 | Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. | Que les Diacres soient maris d'une seule femme, conduisant honnêtement leurs enfants, et leurs propres familles. |
| 13 | For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. | Car ceux qui auront bien servi, acquièrent un bon degré pour eux, et une grande liberté dans la foi qui est en Jésus-Christ. |
| 14 | These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: | Je t'écris ces choses espérant que j'irai bientôt vers toi; |
| 15 | But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. | Mais en cas que je tarde, je t'écris ces choses afin que tu saches comment il faut se conduire dans la Maison de Dieu, qui est l'Eglise du Dieu vivant, la Colonne et l'appui de la vérité. |
| 16 | And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. | Et sans contredit, le mystère de la piété est grand, savoir, que Dieu a été manifesté en chair, justifié en Esprit, vu des Anges, prêché aux Gentils, cru au monde, et élevé dans la gloire. |
