| 1 | Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk, --that ye abound more and more. | Per il resto dunque, fratelli, vi preghiamo ed esortiamo nel Signore Gesù che, come avete ricevuto da noi in quale modo vi conviene camminare per piacere a Dio, abbondiate molto più in questo. |
| 2 | For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus. | Voi conoscete infatti quali comandamenti vi abbiamo dato da parte del Signore Gesù. |
| 3 | For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication; | Poiché questa è la volontà di Dio: la vostra santificazione; che vi asteniate dalla fornicazione. |
| 4 | that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, | che ciascuno di voi sappia possedere il suo vaso in santità ed onore, |
| 5 | not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God; | non con passioni disordinate, come i gentili che non conoscono Dio, |
| 6 | that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. | e che nessuno inganni e frodi negli affari il proprio fratello, perché il Signore è il vendicatore di tutte queste cose, come vi abbiamo già detto e attestato prima. |
| 7 | For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. | Dio infatti non ci ha chiamati all'impurità, ma alla santificazione, |
| 8 | Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you. | Perciò chi disprezza queste cose non disprezza un uomo, ma Dio che vi ha anche dato il suo Spirito Santo. |
| 9 | But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another; | Ora, quanto all'amore fraterno, non avete bisogno che ve ne scriva, perché voi stessi siete stati ammaestrati da Dio ad amarvi gli uni gli altri, |
| 10 | for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more; | Voi infatti fate questo verso tutti i fratelli che sono in tutta la Macedonia ma noi vi esortiamo, fratelli, a sovrabbondare in questo ancora di più, |
| 11 | and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you; | e a cercare diligentemente di vivere in pace, di occuparvi delle vostre cose e di lavorare con le vostre mani, come vi abbiamo ordinato, |
| 12 | that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing. | affinché vi comportiate onestamente verso quelli di fuori e non abbiate bisogno di nulla. |
| 13 | But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope. | Ora, fratelli, non vogliamo che siate nell'ignoranza riguardo a quelli che dormono, affinché non siate contristati come gli altri che non hanno speranza. |
| 14 | For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him. | Infatti, se crediamo che Gesù è morto ed è risuscitato, crediamo pure che Dio condurrà con lui, per mezzo di Gesù, quelli che si sono addormentati. |
| 15 | For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep. | Ora vi diciamo questo per parola del Signore: noi viventi, che saremo rimasti fino alla venuta del Signore, non precederemo coloro che si sono addormentati |
| 16 | For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; | perché il Signore stesso con un potente comando, con voce di arcangelo con la tromba di Dio discenderà dal cielo, e quelli che sono morti in Cristo risusciteranno per primi; |
| 17 | then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. | poi noi viventi, che saremo rimasti saremo rapiti assieme a loro sulle nuvole, per incontrare il Signore nell'aria; così saremo sempre col Signore. |
| 18 | Wherefore comfort one another with these words. | Consolatevi dunque gli uni gli altri con queste parole. |
