| 1 | And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. | Son fils premier-né se nommait Joël, et le second Abia; ils jugeaient à Bersabée. |

| 3 | And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. | Tous les anciens d'Israël s'assemblèrent et vinrent vers Samuel à Rama. |
| 4 | Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, | Ils lui dirent : « Voilà que tu es vieux, et tes fils ne marchent pas sur tes traces; établis donc sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme en ont toutes les nations. » |
| 5 | And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. | Ce langage déplut à Samuel parce qu'ils disaient : « Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger; » et Samuel pria Yahweh. |
| 6 | But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. | Yahweh dit à Samuel : « Ecoute la voix du peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira; car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi qu'ils rejettent, pour que je ne règne plus sur eux. |
| 7 | And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. | Comme ils ont toujours agi à mon égard depuis le jour où je les ai fait monter d'Egypte jusqu'à présent, me délaissant pour servir d'autres dieux, ainsi ils agissent envers toi. |
| 8 | According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. | Et maintenant, écoute leur voix; mais dépose témoignage contre eux, et fais-leur connaître le droit du roi qui régnera sur eux. » |
| 9 | Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. | Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de Yahweh au peuple qui lui demandait un roi. |
| 10 | And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. | Il dit : « Voici quel sera le droit du roi qui régnera sur vous : Il prendra vos fils, et il les mettra sur son char et parmi ses cavaliers, et ils courront devant son char. |
| 11 | And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. | Il s'en fera des chefs de mille et des chefs de cinquante; il leur fera labourer ses champs, récolter ses moissons, fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l'attirail de ses chars. |
| 12 | And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. | Il prendra vos filles pour parfumeuses, pour cuisinières et pour boulangères. |
| 13 | And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. | Vos champs, vos vignes et vos oliviers les meilleurs, il les prendra et les donnera à ses serviteurs. |
| 14 | And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. | Il prendra la dîme de vos moissons et de vos vignes, et la donnera à ses courtisans et à ses serviteurs. |
| 15 | And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. | Il prendra vos serviteurs et vos servantes, vos meilleurs boeufs et vos ânes, et les emploiera à ses ouvrages. |
| 16 | And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. | Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux, et vous-mêmes serez ses esclaves. |
| 17 | He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. | Vous crierez en ce jour-là à cause de votre roi que vous vous serez choisi, mais Yahweh ne vous exaucera pas. » |
| 18 | And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. | Le peuple refusa d'écouter la voix de Samuel; ils dirent : « Non, mais il y aura un roi sur nous, |
| 19 | Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; | et nous serons, nous aussi, comme toutes les nations; notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres. » |
| 20 | That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. | Après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, Samuel les redit aux oreilles de Yahweh. |
| 21 | And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. | Et Yahweh dit à Samuel : « Ecoute leur voix et établis un roi sur eux. » Alors Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël : « Que chacun de vous s'en aille à sa ville. » |
| 22 | And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city. | Il y avait un homme de Benjamin, nommé Cis, fils d'Abiel, fils de Séror, fils de Bécorath, fils d'Aphia, fils d'un Benjamite; c'était un homme vaillant. |
