| 1 | And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. | Quando Samuele diventò vecchio costituì giudici d'Israele i suoi figli. |

| 3 | And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice. | I suoi figli però non seguivano le sue orme, ma si lasciavano sviare da guadagni illeciti, accettavano regali e pervertivano la giustizia. |
| 4 | Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah; | Allora tutti gli anziani d'Israele si radunarono, vennero da Samuele a Ramah, |
| 5 | and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. | e gli dissero: Ecco, tu ormai sei vecchio e i tuoi figli non seguono le tue orme; or dunque stabilisci su di noi un re che ci governi come avviene per tutte le nazioni. |
| 6 | But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah. | Ma la cosa dispiacque a Samuele perché avevano detto: Dacci un re che ci governi. Perciò Samuele pregò l'Eterno. |
| 7 | And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them. | E l'Eterno disse a Samuele: Ascolta la voce del popolo in tutto ciò che ti dice, poiché essi non hanno rigettato te, ma hanno rigettato me, perché io non regni su di loro. |
| 8 | According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. | Si comportano con te, come hanno sempre fatto dal giorno in cui li ho fatti uscire dall'Egitto fino ad oggi: mi hanno abbandonato per servire altri dèi. |
| 9 | Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit thou shalt protest solemnly unto them, and shalt show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. | Ora dunque ascolta la loro richiesta, ma avvertili solennemente e dichiara loro i diritti del re che regnerà su di loro. |
| 10 | And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king. | Così Samuele riferì tutte le parole dell'Eterno al popolo che gli domandava un re. |
| 11 | And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots; | E disse: Questi saranno i diritti del re che regnerà su di voi. Egli prenderà i vostri figli, per destinarli ai suoi carri e farli suoi cavalieri, e perché corrino davanti ai suoi carri; |
| 12 | and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and [he will set some] to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots. | per farli capitani di migliaia e capitani di cinquantine, per metterli ad arare i suoi campi, a mietere la sua messe, a fabbricare le sue armi da guerra e gli attrezzi dei suoi carri. |
| 13 | And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. | Prenderà le vostre figlie per farne profumiere, cuoche e fornaie. |
| 14 | And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. | Prenderà i vostri campi, le vostre vigne, i vostri oliveti, i migliori che avete, per darli ai suoi servi. |
| 15 | And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. | Prenderà la decima delle vostre sementi e delle vostre vigne per darla ai suoi eunuchi e ai suoi servi. |
| 16 | And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. | Prenderà i vostri servi, le vostre serve, i vostri giovani migliori e i vostri asini per usarli nei suoi lavori. |
| 17 | He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants. | Prenderà anche la decima delle vostre greggi, e voi sarete suoi schiavi. |
| 18 | And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day. | Allora in quel giorno griderete a motivo del re che avete scelto per voi, ma l'Eterno non vi risponderà. |
| 19 | But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay: but we will have a king over us, | Ciò nonostante il popolo rifiutò di dare ascolto alle parole di Samuele e disse: No, avremo un re sopra di noi. |
| 20 | that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. | Così saremo anche noi come tutte le nazioni: il nostro re ci governerà, uscirà alla nostra testa e combatterà le nostre battaglie. |
| 21 | And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah. | Samuele ascoltò tutte le parole del popolo e le riferì all'Eterno. |
| 22 | And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city. | L'Eterno disse a Samuele: Ascolta la loro richiesta e stabilisci su di loro un re. Allora Samuele disse agli uomini d'Israele: Ognuno ritorni alla sua città. |
