Et Achis dit à David : « Sache que tu viendras avec moi au camp, toi et tes hommes. » | And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their hosts together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me in the host, thou and thy men. |

Et Saül avait fait disparaître du pays ceux qui évoquaient les morts et les devins. | Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. |
| 4 | Les Philistins s'étant rassemblés, vinrent camper à Sunam; Saül rassembla tout Israël, et ils campèrent à Gelboé. | And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa. |
| 5 | A la vue du camp des Philistins, Saül eut peur, et son coeur fut fort agité. | And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. |
| 6 | Saül consulta Yahweh, et Yahweh ne lui répondit point, ni par les songes, ni par l'Urim, ni par les prophètes. | And when Saul inquired of Jehovah, Jehovah answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. |
| 7 | Alors Saül dit à ses serviteurs : « Cherchez-moi une femme qui évoque les morts, et j'irai vers elle et je la consulterai. » Ses serviteurs lui dirent : « Il y a à Endor une femme qui évoque les morts. » | Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-dor. |
| 8 | Saül se déguisa et mit d'autres vêtements, et il partit, accompagné de deux hommes. Ils arrivèrent de nuit chez la femme, et Saül lui dit : « Prédis-moi l'avenir en évoquant un mort, et fais-moi monter celui que je te dirai. » | And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, Divine unto me, I pray thee, by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomsoever I shall name unto thee. |
| 9 | La femme lui répondit : « Voici que tu sais ce qu'a fait Saül, comment il a retranché du pays ceux qui évoquent les morts et les devins; pourquoi me tends-tu un piège, pour me faire mourir ? | And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? |
| 10 | Saül lui jura par Yahweh en disant : « Aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant! Il ne t'arrivera aucun mal à cause de cela. » | And Saul sware to her by Jehovah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. |
| 11 | Et la femme dit : « Qui te ferai-je monter ? » Il répondit : « Fais-moi monter Samuel. » | Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. |
| 12 | A la vue de Samuel, la femme poussa un grand cri; et la femme dit à Saül : « Pourquoi m'as-tu trompée ? Tu es Saül! » | And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul. |
| 13 | Le roi lui dit : « Ne crains pas; mais qu'as-tu vu ? » La femme dit à Saül : « Je vois un dieu qui monte de la terre. » | And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what seest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I see a god coming up out of the earth. |
| 14 | Il lui dit : « Quelle figure a-t-il ? » Et elle répondit : « C'est un vieillard qui monte, et il est enveloppé d'un manteau. » Saül comprit que c'était Samuel, et il se jeta le visage contre terre et se prosterna. | And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a robe. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and did obeisance. |
| 15 | Samuel dit à Saül : « Pourquoi m'as-tu troublé, en me faisant monter ? » Saül répondit : « Je suis dans une grande détresse : les Philistins me font la guerre, et Dieu s'est retiré de moi; il ne m'a répondu ni par les prophètes ni par les songes. Je t'ai évoqué pour que tu me fasses connaître ce que j'ai à faire. » | And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. |
| 16 | Samuel dit : « Pourquoi me consultes-tu, puisque Yahweh s'est retiré de toi et qu'il est devenu ton adversaire ? | And Samuel said, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing Jehovah is departed from thee, and is become thine adversary? |
| 17 | Yahweh a agi comme il l'avait annoncé par mon intermédiaire : Yahweh a arraché la royauté de ta main, et l'a donnée à ton compagnon, à David. | And Jehovah hath done unto thee, as he spake by me: and Jehovah hath rent the kingdom out of thy hand, and given it to thy neighbor, even to David. |
| 18 | Parce que tu n'as pas obéi à la voix de Yahweh, et que tu n'as pas traité Amalec selon l'ardeur de sa colère, c'est pour cela que Yahweh a ainsi agi envers toi en ce jour. | Because thou obeyedst not the voice of Jehovah, and didst not execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath Jehovah done this thing unto thee this day. |
| 19 | Et même Yahweh livrera Israël avec toi aux mains des Philistins. Demain, toi et tes fils, vous serez avec moi, et Yahweh livrera le camp d'Israël entre les mains des Philistins. » | Moreover Jehovah will deliver Israel also with thee into the hand of the Philistines; and to-morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: Jehovah will deliver the host of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines. |
| 20 | Aussitôt Saül tomba par terre de toute sa hauteur, car les paroles de Samuel l'avaient rempli d'effroi; de plus, les forces lui manquaient, car il n'avait pris aucune nourriture de tout le jour et de toute la nuit. | Then Saul fell straightway his full length upon the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night. |
| 21 | La femme vint vers Saül et, voyant son grand trouble, elle lui dit : « Ta servante a obéi à ta voix; j'ai exposé ma vie, en obéissant aux paroles que tu m'as dites. | And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thy handmaid hath hearkened unto thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me. |
| 22 | Ecoute maintenant, toi aussi, la voix de ta servante, et que je t'offre un morceau de pain; manges-en, pour avoir de la force lorsque tu poursuivras ta route. | Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thy handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way. |
| 23 | Mais il refusa et dit : « Je ne mangerai point. » Ses serviteurs, ainsi que la femme, le pressèrent, et il se rendit à leurs instances. Il se leva de terre et s'assit sur le divan. | But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, constrained him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. |
| 24 | La femme avait chez elle un veau gras, elle se hâta de le tuer et, prenant de la farine, elle la pétrit et en cuisit des pains sans levain. | And the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it; and she took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof: |
| 25 | Elle les mit devant Saül et devant ses serviteurs, et ils mangèrent. Puis s'étant levés, ils partirent la nuit même. | and she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night. |
