| 2 | Saül prit trois mille hommes d'élite d'entre tout Israël, et il alla à la recherche de David et de ses gens jusque sur les rochers des boucs sauvages. | Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. |
| 3 | Il arriva aux parcs des brebis qui étaient près du chemin; il y avait là une caverne, où Saül entra pour se couvrir les pieds; et David et ses gens étaient assis au fond de la caverne. | And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet. Now David and his men were abiding in the innermost parts of the cave. |
| 4 | Les hommes de David lui dirent : « Voici le jour dont Yahweh t'a dit : Voici que je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains; traite-le comme il te plaira. » David se leva et coupa à la dérobée le pan du manteau de Saül. | And the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of which Jehovah said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul`s robe privily. |
| 5 | Après cela, le coeur de David lui battit, de ce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. | And it came to pass afterward, that David`s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul`s skirt. |
| 6 | Et il dit à ses hommes : « Que Yahweh me préserve de faire contre mon seigneur, l'oint de Yahweh, une chose telle que de porter ma main sur lui, car il est l'oint de Yahweh! » | And he said unto his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing unto my lord, Jehovah`s anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is Jehovah`s anointed. |
| 7 | Par ses paroles, David réprima ses hommes et ne leur permit pas de se jeter sur Saül. Saül s'étant levé pour sortir de la caverne continua sa route. | So David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. |
| 8 | Après cela David se leva et, sortant de la caverne, il se mit à crier après Saül en disant : « O roi, mon seigneur! » Saül regarda derrière lui, et David s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna. | David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance. |
| 9 | Et David dit à Saül : « Pourquoi écoutes-tu les propos de gens qui disent : Voici que David cherche à te faire du mal ? | And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearkenest thou to men`s words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? |
| 10 | Voici qu'aujourd'hui tes yeux ont vu comment Yahweh t'a livré, aujourd'hui même, entre mes mains dans la caverne. On me disait de te tuer; mais mon oeil a eu pitié de toi, et j'ai dit : Je ne porterai point ma main sur mon seigneur, car il est l'oint de Yahweh. | Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee; but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is Jehovah`s anointed. |
| 11 | Vois donc, mon père, vois dans ma main le pan de ton manteau. Puisque j'ai coupé le pan de ton manteau et que je ne t'ai pas tué, reconnais et vois qu'il n'y a dans ma conduite ni méchanceté ni révolte, et que je n'ai point péché contre toi. Et toi, tu fais la chasse à ma vie pour me l'ôter. | Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee, though thou huntest after my life to take it. |
| 12 | Que Yahweh soit juge entre moi et toi, et que Yahweh me venge de toi! Mais ma main ne sera pas sur toi. | Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee. |
| 13 | Des méchants vient la méchanceté, dit le vieux proverbe; aussi ma main ne sera pas sur toi. | As saith the proverb of the ancients, Out of the wicked cometh forth wickedness; but my hand shall not be upon thee. |
| 14 | Après qui le roi d'Israël s'est-il mis en marche ? Qui poursuis-tu ? Un chien mort ? Une puce ? | After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. |
| 15 | Que Yahweh juge et prononce entre toi et moi. Qu'il regarde et qu'il défende ma cause, et que sa sentence me délivre de ta main! » | Jehovah therefore be judge, and give sentence between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand. |
| 16 | Lorsque David eut achevé d'adresser ces paroles à Saül, Saül dit : « Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David ? » Et Saül éleva la voix et pleura. | And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. |
| 17 | Il dit à David : « Tu es plus juste que moi; car toi tu m'as fait du bien, et moi je t'ai rendu du mal. | And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil. |
| 18 | Tu as montré aujourd'hui que tu agis avec bonté envers moi, puisque Yahweh m'a livré entre tes mains et que tu ne m'as pas tué. | And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou killedst me not. |
| 19 | Si quelqu'un rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il poursuivre en paix son chemin ? Que Yahweh te fasse du bien en retour de ce que tu m'as fait en ce jour! | For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day. |
| 20 | Maintenant, voici que je sais que tu seras roi et que la royauté d'Israël sera stable entre tes mains. | And now, behold, I know that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand. |
| 21 | Jure-moi donc par Yahweh que tu ne détruiras pas ma postérité après moi, et que tu ne retrancheras pas mon nom de la maison de mon père. » | Swear now therefore unto me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father`s house. |
| 22 | David le jura à Saül. Et Saül s'en alla dans sa maison, et David et ses hommes montèrent à l'endroit fort. | And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the stronghold. |
