| 1 | David se rendit à Nobé, auprès du grand prêtre Achimélech; et Achimélech accourut effrayé au-devant de David, et lui dit : « Pourquoi es-tu seul et n'y a-t-il personne avec toi ? » | Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? |
| 2 | David répondit au prêtre Achimélech : « Le roi m'a donné un ordre et m'a dit : Que personne ne sache rien de l'affaire pour laquelle je t'envoie et je t'ai donné un ordre. J'ai assigné à mes gens tel lieu de rendez-vous. | And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know anything of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place. |
| 3 | Et maintenant qu'as-tu sous la main ? Donne-moi cinq pains dans la main, ou ce qui se trouvera. » | Now therefore what is under thy hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatsoever there is present. |
| 4 | Le prêtre répondit à David et dit : « Je n'ai pas sous la main de pain ordinaire, mais il y a du pain consacré; pourvu que tes gens se soient abstenus de femmes. » | And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women. |
| 5 | David répondit au prêtre et lui dit : « Nous nous sommes abstenus de femmes depuis trois jours que je suis parti, et les vases de mes gens sont chose sainte; et si le voyage est profane, pourtant il est sanctifié quant au vase ? » | And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day shall their vessels be holy? |
| 6 | Alors le prêtre lui donna du pain consacré, car il n'y avait pas là d'autre pain que le pain de proposition, qu'on avait ôté de devant Yahweh, pour le remplacer par du pain chaud au moment où on l'enlevait. | So the priest gave him holy [bread]; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Jehovah, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. |
| 7 | Ce même jour, de trouvait là un homme d'entre les serviteurs de Saül, retenu devant Yahweh; il s'appelait Doëg, un Edomite, chef des bergers de Saül. | Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chiefest of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul. |
| 8 | David dit à Achimélech : « N'as-tu pas sous la main une lance ou une épée ? Car je n'ai pas même pris avec moi mon épée ni mes armes, parce que l'ordre du roi était pressant. » | And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thy hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king`s business required haste. |
| 9 | Le prêtre répondit : « Il y a l'épée de Goliath, le Philistin que tu as tué dans la vallée du Térébinthe; la voilà, enveloppée dans le manteau, derrière l'éphod. Si tu veux la prendre, prends-la, car il n'y en a pas d'autre ici. » Et David dit : « Elle n'a pas sa pareille, donne-la-moi. » | And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the vale of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it; for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me. |
| 10 | David se leva et s'enfuit ce même jour loin de Saül; il se rendit chez Achis, roi de Geth. | And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. |
| 11 | Les serviteurs d'Achis lui dirent : « N'est-ce pas là David, roi du pays ? N'est-ce pas celui pour qui l'on chantait en dansant : Saül a tué ses mille, et David ses dix mille. | And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands? |
| 12 | David prit ces paroles à coeur, et il eut une grande peur d'Achis, roi de Geth. | And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath. |
| 13 | Il dissimula sa raison à leurs yeux et fit l'insensé entre leurs mains; il battait du tambour sur les battants des portes, et il laissait couler sa salive sur sa barbe. | And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. |
| 14 | Achis dit à ses serviteurs : « Vous voyez bien que cet homme est un fou; pourquoi me l'avez-vous amené ? | Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad; wherefore then have ye brought him to me? |
| 15 | Est-ce que je manque de fous, que vous m'ameniez celui-ci, pour qu'il fasse des folies devant moi ? Doit-il entrer dans ma maison ? » | Do I lack madmen, that ye have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house? |
