| 1 | Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD. | Or Samuel dit à Saül: L'Eternel m'a envoyé pour t'oindre afin que tu sois Roi sur mon peuple, sur Israël; maintenant donc écoute les paroles de l'Eternel. |
| 2 | Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. | Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées: J'ai rappelé en ma mémoire ce qu'Hamalec a fait à Israël, et comment il s'opposa à lui sur le chemin, quand il montait d'Egypte. |
| 3 | Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. | Va maintenant, et frappe Hamalec, et détruisez à la façon de l'interdit tout ce qu'il a, et ne l'épargne point; mais fais mourir tant les hommes que les femmes; tant les grands que ceux qui tètent, tant les boeufs que le menu bétail, tant les chameaux que les ânes. |
| 4 | And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. | Saül donc assembla le peuple à cri public, et en fit le dénombrement à Télaïm, qui fut de deux cent mille hommes de pied, et de dix mille hommes de Juda. |
| 5 | And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley. | Et Saül vint jusqu'à la ville de Hamalec, et mit des embuscades en la vallée. |
| 6 | And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. | Et Saül dit aux Kéniens: Allez retirez-vous, descendez du milieu des Hamalécites, de peur que je ne vous enveloppe avec eux; car vous usâtes de gratuité envers tous les enfants d'Israël, quand ils montèrent d'Egypte. Et les Kéniens se retirèrent d'entre les Hamalécites. |
| 7 | And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. | Et Saül frappa les Hamalécites depuis Havila jusqu'en Sur, qui est vis-à-vis d'Egypte. |
| 8 | And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. | Et il prit vif Agag, Roi d'Hamalec; mais il fît passer tout le peuple au fil de l'épée à la façon de l'interdit. |
| 9 | But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. | Saül donc et le peuple épargnèrent Agag, et les meilleures brebis, les meilleurs boeufs, les bêtes grasses, les agneaux, et tout ce qui était bon; et ils ne voulurent point les détruire à la façon de l'interdit; ils détruisirent seulement à la façon de l'interdit tout ce qui n'était d'aucun prix, et méprisable. |
| 10 | Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, | Alors la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Samuel en disant: |
| 11 | It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. | Je me repens d'avoir établi Saül pour Roi, car il s'est détourné de moi, et n'a point exécuté mes paroles. Et Samuel en fut fort attristé, et cria à l'Eternel toute cette nuit-là. |
| 12 | And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. | Puis Samuel se leva de bon matin pour aller au-devant de Saül. Et on fit rapport à Samuel, en disant: Saül est venu à Carmel, et voici il s'est fait là dresser une place, mais il s'en est retourné, et passant au delà il est descendu à Guilgal. |
| 13 | And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. | Quand Samuel fut venu à Saül, Saül lui dit: Tu sois béni de l'Eternel; j'ai exécuté la parole de l'Eternel. |
| 14 | And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? | Et Samuel dit: Quel est donc ce bêlement de brebis à mes oreilles, et ce meuglement de boeufs que j'entends? |
| 15 | And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. | Et Saül répondit: Ils les ont amenés des Hamalécites; car le peuple a épargné les meilleures brebis et les meilleurs boeufs, pour les sacrifier à l'Eternel ton Dieu; et nous avons détruit le reste à la façon de l'interdit. |
| 16 | Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. | Et Samuel dit à Saül: Arrête, et je te déclarerai ce que l'Eternel m'a dit cette nuit; et il lui répondit: Parle? |
| 17 | And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? | Samuel donc dit: N'est-il pas vrai que, quand tu étais petit à tes yeux, tu as été fait Chef des Tribus d'Israël, et l'Eternel t'a oint pour Roi sur Israël? |
| 18 | And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed. | Or l'Eternel t'avait envoyé en cette expédition, et t'avait dit: Va, et détruis à la façon de l'interdit ces pécheurs, les Hamalécites, et fais-leur la guerre, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient consumés. |
| 19 | Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? | Et pourquoi n'as-tu pas obéi à la voix de l'Eternel, mais tu t'es jeté sur le butin, et as fait ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel. |
| 20 | And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. | Et Saül répondit à Samuel: J'ai pourtant obéi à la voix de l'Eternel, et je suis allé par le chemin par lequel l'Eternel m'a envoyé, et j'ai amené Agag Roi des Hamalécites, et j'ai détruit à la façon de l'interdit les Hamalécites. |
| 21 | But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. | Mais le peuple a pris des brebis et des boeufs du butin, comme des prémices de l'interdit, pour sacrifier à l'Eternel ton Dieu à Guilgal. |
| 22 | And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. | Alors Samuel dit: L'Eternel prend-il plaisir aux holocaustes et aux sacrifices, comme qu'on obéisse à sa voix? Voici, l'obéissance vaut mieux que le sacrifice, et se rendre attentif vaut mieux que la graisse des moutons; |
| 23 | For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. | Car la rébellion est autant que le péché de divination, et c'est une idole et un Théraphim que la transgression. Parce donc que tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel, il t'a aussi rejeté, afin que tu ne sois plus Roi. |
| 24 | And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. | Et Saül répondit à Samuel: J'ai péché parce que j'ai transgressé le commandement de l'Eternel, et tes paroles; car je craignais le peuple, et j'ai acquiescé à sa voix. |
| 25 | Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. | Mais maintenant, je te prie, pardonne-moi mon péché, et retourne-t'en avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Eternel. |
| 26 | And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. | Et Samuel dit à Saül: Je ne retournerai point avec toi; parce que tu as rejeté la parole de l'Eternel, et que l'Eternel t'a rejeté, afin que tu ne sois plus Roi sur Israël. |
| 27 | And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. | Et comme Samuel se tournait pour s'en aller, Saül lui prit le pan de son manteau, qui se déchira. |
| 28 | And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. | Alors Samuel lui dit: L'Eternel a aujourd'hui déchiré le Royaume d'Israël de dessus toi, et l'a donné à ton prochain, qui est meilleur que toi. |
| 29 | And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. | Et en effet; la force d'Israël ne mentira point, elle ne se repentira point; car il n'est pas un homme, pour se repentir. |
| 30 | Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. | Et Saül répondit: J'ai péché; mais honore moi maintenant, je te prie, en la présence des Anciens de mon peuple, et en la présence d'Israël, et retourne-t'en avec moi, et je me prosternerai devant l'Eternel ton Dieu. |
| 31 | So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. | Samuel donc s'en retourna et suivit Saül; et Saül se prosterna devant l'Eternel. |
| 32 | Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. | Puis Samuel dit: Amenez-moi Agag Roi d'Hamalec. Et Agag vint à lui, faisant le gracieux; car Agag disait: Certainement l'amertume de la mort est passée. |
| 33 | And Samuel said, As the sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. | Mais Samuel dit: Comme ton épée a privé les femmes de leurs enfants, ainsi ta mère sera privée d'enfants entre les femmes. Et Samuel mit Agag en pièces devant l'Eternel à Guilgal. |
| 34 | Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. | Puis il s'en alla à Rama; et Saül monta en sa maison à Guibbath-Saül. |
| 35 | And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. | Et Samuel n'alla plus voir Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort; quoique Samuel eût mené deuil sur Saül, de ce que l'Eternel s'était repenti d'avoir établi Saül pour Roi sur Israël. |
